Encanto Projection coming to "it's a small world" façade April 11th

Cute, but it looks every single bit of the week-long project it took to key out backgrounds and map the show (which is to say, it's nice but will inevitably overstay its welcome). I really don't like how bodies just kind of float without their bottoms, but it's par for the course. I did really like the doors and the prophecy at the very end, and it actually makes me excited to see a fireworks show in the future that might use that iconography in its design.

Yeah, this would be amazing during some fireworks show, but it looks out of place on small world.

Apropos of absolutely nothing, this afternoon on KUSC Classical 91.5 the radio hostess played a song from the Encanto soundtrack. She said what the specific title was, but now I forget. It was pleasant enough, but I didn't think it was earth-shattering. It kind of sounded like... movie music. If you know what I mean.

Also, if Burbank execs pretend to love these new Disney and Pixar movies they only release on Disney+ for 8 bucks so much, why don't they build a new day parade around them? I liked when Disneyland did that every summer; The Lion King, Hercules Victory Parade, Mulan Parade, etc.

Hercules Victory Parade was my absolute favorite of the 1990's, mostly because of the fabulous lead float with the singing muses, and then dozens of kids from Fullerton Junior College (Go Hornets!) filling out the parade route with Grecian Urn hairdo's and togas and more than a little skin on display. ;)

I feel Disney used to make big deals out of each movies' release at their park, now the best we get is a T Shirt or movie trailer replacing George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola's pop culture extravaganza Captain EO.

Parades sound way better and much bigger.

Then again Disney of today builds parades and trashes them after one year (Paint The Night) or one week (Magic Happens).

Isn't that weird? There's got to be a story there.

And whoever is in charge of parades for Disneyland probably has some explaining to do, if they even still have a job there. The financial loss on both of those recent Anaheim parades must be staggering.

It just makes no sense.

I didn't like Encanto or Turning Red. For both movies, I had to do multiple sittings to finally get through them.
Those two movies are like running through a gauntlet. MST3K or RiffTrax would have a field day with them.

They deserve this award.

I mean… this is what Disneyland has always done?

They decided to name the castle to tie into the new movie Sleeping Beauty which was coming out in 1959.

A limited time projection offering for their current biggest IP isn’t that crazy. Don’t we recall all the parades they used to do for their new films?
Sleeping Beauty is a highly regarded milestone for animation. Encanto is another Disney movie. Also, Walt didn't just project Sleeping Beauty or Alice onto The Jungle Cruise or Space Mountain. He had a castle as the central icon of the park and decided to name it after the upcoming big film. It wasn't a cash grab of "you liked Sleeping Beauty? Well, come down to see the NEW Sleeping Beauty Castle!" It was just a named weenie.

Let's also not forget that Disney had a great balance of IP and original stories to fit the medium. Theme park/attraction design was considered an artistic medium with its own stories. Now, they are blank slates to advertise their films. The goal is getting fans to the parks and selling merch rather than creating experiences that the artist wants to create.

....Why are people so obsessed with making it known that they have no interest in Encanto or will not watch it.... like do you want a cookie? I am... not sure I understand this proclamation.....

Has Disney even specified why they are doing random projections on it's a small world???
The same reason people are obsessed with posting nonstop about loving the movie, people like to have their voices heard and social media often benefits those who double down into camps. I've seen people saying that Encanto is the greatest animated film of all time. Its not. It was pretty mediocre with a truly unlikeable cast of characters. The songs were okay, but felt like the B sides to Moana's soundtrack. But people become obsessed. Its the same reason Frozen blew up like it did and then, just as quickly, everybody loved to hate on it.

I'm not sure why. It was a pretty mediocre movie.
Have you seen it more than once? For me it was a hundred percent better on a second viewing. I went from thinking it was annoying to loving it. Once you know in advance nothing happens, you can really enjoy all the character interactions more, and that’s where it shines.

Doesn’t belong on Small World, though, even though Encanto’s World is reeeally small.

I keep asking people this; it’s almost like a research project now: Have you seen it more than once? On first viewing, I had exactly the same opinion you posted. I gave it one more chance and it was like watching a different film.

My theory: It’s an unusual film that doesn’t really work until you know in advance who everyone is and what’s going on.

I actually thought the projection show worked really well! It's a nice little addition that displaces nothing that they didn't have to do.

It's a perfect example of one of the 'little things' people claim they want in the parks and to be added from time to time, but then they complain about endlessly them for some reason (or because it's not their favorite IP).

Doesn’t it displace the charm of Small World’s wonderful world-famous facade, if only temporarily? Oh, never mind.

And please don’t ever Bobby Brady me ever again.😄

I apologize for GIFing you with the least consequential Brady. Next time, I'll give you A-List. Jan GIF, coming right up!

The Small World facade is still there the rest of the night. The Encanto show is short (it was basically just "We Don't Talk About Bruno" and then it ended), and they only do it like three times a night. It's a fun little extra! Like an Easter Egg on a DVD, back when they actually put bonus features on the things. For the vast majority of the night, IASW has its normal lighting scheme. So to me this is harmless and a welcome addition.

What would they even do in a Strange World show? Interact with the weird alien pink things? Bring back the terrible voice acting for a few minutes?

They could do a thirty second “They’re the Clades” show.

The problem with Strange World was the dialogue. The actors did the best they could with what they were given.
