Another reason why Duffy is a hit in Japan is because Japan has a long history with cuteness and anything cute which can be viewed very differently in the West. Japan also makes tons of merchandise for any property when its from their country or not. Disney is also extremely popular in Japan.

Heck if you visit any Japanese website or any store in Japan that features Disney. Expect to see alot of Minnie Mouse,Marie, Chip N Dale,Stitch, and Duffy merchandise since all these characters are loved by the Japanese. Speaking of Chip N Dale, since their very popular in Japan did Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers ever air in that country?

It didn't when I was a kid living there. But then again, that has been a while. When did it first air in the USA?

Why hasn't he been at Disneyland Park in Anaheim? He's missing out on the interactions with the Mad Hatter and Alice. I also hope they find a way to bring Toulouse and Berlioz at Epcot's France Pavilion.

That would be awesome. And I totally agree on Berlioz and Toulouse! Then again, my cats are all named after the Aristocats, so I very much would love more of them in the parks!

Wikipedia says March 4, 1989 on the Disney Channel, but I think most people saw it as part of the Disney Afternoon reruns from 90-93.
I only remember the 1990's version myself, as Disney Channel was a paid service at the time and our local Fox affiliate aired the Disney Afternoon, so it was over the air programming.

Man, I'm not at all happy about this. My little girl absolutely LOVES Duffy, and meeting him was one of the highlights of our last trip for her. I love character meet and greets, and thought that having Duffy as one was actually really cool. I like when there is unique or different characters, and could have cared less if he was "just made for merchandise" or whatever. I hear that he will be replaced with Daisy. That's awesome, and I love Daisy...but man, there ARE other places to meet her. If he's going to be replaced, at least make it with a unique character. Just my opinion.

Duffy is such a shoehorn... Not sure what the appeal is outside of the fact that its a teddy bear. I only want to see actual characters from Disney related shows/movies/cartoons/comics

My youngest loves Duffy as well so it is sad to see him go. I don't care that disney tried to make him a huge merchandise push it worked we bought one and he sleeps with him every night now for two years so it was a good investment.

Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers aired from 1989 to 1990. At this point, Chip N Dale weren't though of becoming huge in Japan until the early 2000's. They even have their own boat show during the Summer and Winter seasons in Tokyo Disney Sea where in the winter they blast out fire in the air to warm up guests and splash water during the summer into the audience.

I remember seeing an old pin from the France Pavilion from 2002 which featured all the kittens. This was way before the kittens become meetable in any Disney parks. I remember watching the movie before visiting to WDW for the third time and thinking that those two deserve more attention in any merchandise related to The Aristocats. While I love Marie and her merchandise in general, I wish her brothers showed up more often. I did see two wallpapers featuring the siblings but that was about it. Not even a single plush with Toulouse or Berlioz. Which is a shame since Toulouse played an important role during the film where he keeps warning his siblings and mother Duchess that Edgar was behind the one that kidnapped them. At least her brothers showed up in a few Marie books along with Duchess.

I won't miss him, but again something is being removed with nothing to replace it. That is disappointing but expected.

While Duffy is by far the character that reminds me of the 'Happy Love Day' episode of the Simpsons (Trash of the Titans), M&Gs absorb people away from things that I want to do.

I had no idea Duffy was so unliked! I thought it was a fun M&G always very interactive. Last time he saw my Hogwarts shirts and we did spellwork and he floated away (aka ballerina twirled away) when we did Wingardium Leviosa.

I agree, I loved seeing Duffy at WDW. I remember dropped my pen when he was about to sign my autograph. He gave me a big hug which helped since he was the last character I meet during my Senior Trip along with Marie.
