Downtown Disney update

There were some problems at Downtown Disney. It was not a center for crime, but some issues did occur. Other areas in Orlando where the trouble occurred cracked down. Once the trouble moved to Downtown Disney, Disney cracked down as well. It had very little to do with the nature of DTD, it was simply a convenient place. It could happen at today's Downtown Disney, but doesn't due to the security measures.

I know this is off topic, but refusing an expired license is something I really just do not understand. Your license to operate a motor vehicle has expired, your age has not magically changed. Though, I also do not understand why my birthdate has to be checked on my new license, since all new licenses here are portrait for under 21 and landscape for over 21. Do the people checking really think I would go through all of the effort to create a near perfect fake, but put the wrong birthdate?

Because expired licenses were once a very active source of fake IDs.. where you would not turn in your old license, and get your new one.. and just hand the old license off to someone else to use as a fake ID.

The problem was HoB as I remember it and it was just a result of the spiriling down of DTD overall. That trend has been dramatically reversed and the positive results will be even more evident when the economy turns around someday.
So… how exactly did this so-called "HOB problem" get magically solved when they still book the same acts and still attract the same crowd?

Funny that after the clubs closed the security issues suddenly decreased dramatically while the crowds have steadily increased despite a faltering economy. Skies the limit for DTD now.

If the security issues decreased so much, why does Disney pay for the same amount of security?

Also, crowds are a function of time of day. At 11:30 p.m., the crowds are a tiny fraction of what they were when PI was open.

Was Pleasure Island ever not safe?

Also, I still miss the Virgin Megastore.
There was that burrito scare... although that was Disneyland.

Let me tell you. It was rough! I have photographic evidence:

I am pretty sure they had to agree to meet certain standards a would be expected by any performers on Disney property. It isn't Vegas. And I am also certain some acts never returned.

If the security issues decreased so much, why does Disney pay for the same amount of security? Inflation?

For now anyway. Lets see what the trend lines are after Splitsville opens.

I think the PI concept works isolated from mixed use areas that cater to all age demographics. I have no problem with that idea. There is a thought by some that Disney created the problems to undermine PI. But whether they did it on purpose or it was just flawed from the start only indicates that there was a serious problem all along. Funny that after the clubs closed the security issues suddenly decreased dramatically while the crowds have steadily increased despite a faltering economy. Skies the limit for DTD now.

Didn't I say the problem was the West Side being built? Didn't I say it put PI in the middle of the area, thus causing a traffic problem which TDO decided to ignore rather than build with vision and create a viable alternative around the island? When PI opened all it had was what is now the MP next to it. There was no "mix use" because either you were old enough to go to PI or you weren't, so if not, you didn't go near it as there would be no reason to. West side was the area that was poorly conceived, not PI.

Also did I not give you multiple specific instances of security issues since the closing of the clubs? Also do you realize(well no, you don't because you don't ever GO to DTD) that the crowds are mostly international? It is not busy despite the faltering economy, it's busy because of the faltering economy! But that doesn't change the fact that they have been unable to do anything with the clubs ON Pleasure Island since the closing.

The problems caused by the West Side are just a part of the overall issues. Once built it really was not an option to go back. I am pretty sure Cirque was probably decided in Cali by higher ups and not TDO. Maybe even by Eisner himself. I understand you feel the need to carry on with the "PI was perfect" take. I disagree. Again, if it were the pancea you paint it as TDA would have duplicated it at the DLR. They didn't because it wasn't. Proof is in the pudding.

won't be long now.

He's right, it won't be long now until August 10th's Comedy Warehouse Reunion: Improv Gone Wild at the Orlando Repertory Theater (http://savepleasureisland.blogspot.com/2012/06/pi-update-comedy-warehouse-cast-to.html) September 15th's 8TRAX Reunion at the Retro Room, (http://savepleasureisland.blogspot.com/2012/07/8trax-reunion-coming-in-september.html) and the mother of all reunions, Sept 28th - 30th's Adventurer's Club ConGaloosh 2012: Adventures Gone Wong (http://congaloosh.org/home), and hopefully news about the return of our beloved clubs as well! Glad you pointed out that their is so much Pleasure Island coming up in the next couple of month's wdw71fan!

Unfortunately, the Improv Gone Wild: A Night With The Cast From Comedy Warehouse event was postponed for now due to lack of sponsors and overall ticket sales.
They are working with the Orlando Repertory Theatre to schedule a new date, likely in January.
(If you already bought tickets, they will be valid for the rescheduled show)

The real problem with comedy clubs is that you need a stable of talented comics. Orlando is not a place that draws that kind of talent nor is it on the circuit that good comedians work. The big venues attract the talented folks.
