Do you read the news?

My parents watch the news, but I never keep up with it in WDW... I just don't want to hear about all of the depressing things while in WDW. It always brings me down.

To some extent, yes. I'm rarely at my resort during the day, other than first thing in the morning and later in the evening before turning in. During those times, I will turn on the tv for a bit, or surf the net and keep up with things that way.

Nope. We're there to escape from the real world. Whitney Houston died while we were on our last trip to The World. The only reason why we knew that it happened is because my sister-in-law texted the news of it to us.

Absolutely NO NEWS !!! I despise the news and try to avoid it during my day to day life, which is very hard considering I'm a cable tv tech. If I put a local station on for the weather, I do it towards the end of the broadcast.

I would check the news once or twice a day on my phone while in line. So I satisfy my curiosity of what the outside world is doing. I don't really look at TV news on vacation. Especially since my last trip was during the Zimmerman trial and that was all they talked about.

I've even committed the blasphemous offense of reading press releases from work and sending them my feedback on my phone while in line. But that is just so I look more important at work than I actually am. Have to get that promotion so I can pay for future trips.

We have turned on the news when we're back at the room...just habit I guess. Still, the only news story I really remember from any of our WDW trips was this past November. It was one of our non-park days...so that also helped make us more aware of the news. The big story that caught our attention was Hostess declaring bankruptcy.

I am in sort of a unique situation in that in the past 2 years, i have only gone to WDW for the news.
I am local news photographer, I have been down there for Obama at the MK, Rick Scott at Epcot, Disney Marathon, and the FLE Opening.

I check twitter on a regular basis and since I follow CNN Breaking News and a local agency news I do keep informed about current events.

Back in May, I stayed at the Swan. They provided USA Today to the guests. I'd scan through that while drinking morning coffee out on the balcony. I'm an early morning person, so it was nice to relax out there when it was quiet and read the paper before the parks opened.

I turn the TV on in the resort for a brief time and quickly see what major breaking news has hit, and listen to some of the things happening around the Orlando area. ( Hmmmm, now what area was that crime wave committed in just in case I win the lottery and move down here quickly???) Other than that, I try not to let anything bother my Disney time...But I have my newspapers saved at home and read them all to play catch up for a few days after I get home.

I like reading the morning paper while waiting on the bus to arrive. Yes I am old fashion and yes it was hard to find an actual copy of the News paper. It's part of our routine and my Daughter needs her routine so if she doens't see me reading the paper in the morning then she thinks something is wrong and this leads to a melt down before we even get on the bus. But the comics count as news right?

We will usually watch the news in the morning while we are getting ready, then we can see what the local weather is. Otherwise at other times we will either watch the Must See or the Disney countdown or Hubby will turn it onto ESPN so he can catch up on his sports games news.

I have always turned on CNN while there to keep up with what's going. Think about how 9-11 effected everything. Like someone said now smart phones I will see what going on at home. I never have to ask people what did i miss when I return.

This is intriguing, as it seems you are going to some effort to construct those ramparts. Do you have a backup "dull" phone you carry around to allow you to find loved ones in the park, while avoiding the temptation of a quick round of Candy Crush, which leads to scanning Facebook, which leads to clicking a link on why "We're Eating More Broccoli," etc....

Or is your resolution to stay off the non-Disney grid so thorough that you walk around with no phone at all? Even if you do go to that length, I bet there are many people on here who don't feel comfortable being COMPLETELY cut off, especially if they have young kids with them. It must be a challenge for those who earnestly crave that cocoon, when the devices we once used to maintain basic voice and text contact have made all the ephemera of everyday life (e-mail, social sites, games) so constantly just at reach. You look down to check the time walking across Liberty Square and "Oh...look at all the Facebook messages waiting." It has become more or less inescapable without a steely resolve to the contrary.
I don't have data on my phone. I did add data to my wife's phone in Feb due to Disney trial My Disney Experience. We wanted to keep track of wait times and ADRs. So its easy for me to stay away from FB. I don't even check work email. I know if I read email I would end up getting involved. This is my time away from the world. It will still be there when I return. There is nothing I can do anyways.

I usually leave the phone at the hotel. :) WDW is my little magic place. I can not mix it with the universe outside the magic bubble.

You don't need a phone. I don't read WDW apps or times on my phone. I pretty much know my way around and where to be when. And you can always pick a time and place to meet up later, should you wish to go your separate ways for a bit.
