Do you read the news?

Very simple question: Do you keep up with the news while you're at you-know-where?

I know many people will say no. I do, though. In fact, the advent of smartphones has made it possible for me to keep up with news while I'm actually *in the parks.* This will strike many of you as blasphemy and completely counter to the purpose of a visit, I'm sure. Still some of my happiest memories of my most recent trips are pulling up headlines or digging into a lengthy feature on politics while standing in line (which let's be honest is a drag regardless...but still kind of cool at the same time. If that makes sense?)

Yes, the mixture of the "outside" and the "inside," the sacred and the profane as it were, feels a bit transgressive in itself and might account for why these memories stand out for me. I like reading the news. I like going to Disney. And yes, I like doing them at the same time.

I dont check the news whilst in the parks but drive my DW nuts when we get back to the room because the first thing i do is turn on the TV and put on the news to see what has been happening during the day around thevworld.

Yes we sometimes check it when we get back to our room at night. We particularly like to look at the weather and see whats happening 'at home'. Usually its snowing or icy or something, as we go in the winter.

I still use Disney to get away from it all. No news in the parks, no smartphones, no internets.

At morning in the hotel or in the bus I might briefly check the odd headline or two. At night I do a quick round of my hotmail/facebook/fora.
But not much. And I actively avoid any drama. I even bring a good book to read to avoid the temptation to fill a lost hour or a poolside afternoon with reading about real world events.

I do not read or watch the news while at the world. I also turn off my cell phone and do not answer emails. All these things are the mundaneness of life I choose to leave behind. After worrying about them the other 357 days of the year it is actually part of what I consider a vacation. Whether at WDW or the beach it really does not matter, it is all part of my down time and I could care less who did what to who or what politician is lying this time...I am sure the exact things will still be happening in a weeks time only perhaps with different names attached to the story.

I thought you were asking if we read the news while in the toilet. :cautious:

I have always prided myself by removing from the outside (real) world. It was much easier before the smartphones.

You have no idea of the magnitude of this thing. If you allow the real world to infiltrate WDW then civilization as you know it ceases to exist. You see, right now you have real world. But there is also WDW. That's the world you know, the world you grew up with... Fantasyland, Adventure land, Tommorrowland , Frontierland " We all love that world."

and he's dying. If real world walks through this door, he will kill WDW. WDW divided against itself cannot stand!"

I check here to read the Disney news, is that what you mean? When we were at DLR they were moving the space shuttle Endeavour from the LA airport to the California Science center, it took a couple days and anytime you turned on the local news you could see it slowly moving around LA. That was fun.

This is intriguing, as it seems you are going to some effort to construct those ramparts. Do you have a backup "dull" phone you carry around to allow you to find loved ones in the park, while avoiding the temptation of a quick round of Candy Crush, which leads to scanning Facebook, which leads to clicking a link on why "We're Eating More Broccoli," etc....

Or is your resolution to stay off the non-Disney grid so thorough that you walk around with no phone at all? Even if you do go to that length, I bet there are many people on here who don't feel comfortable being COMPLETELY cut off, especially if they have young kids with them. It must be a challenge for those who earnestly crave that cocoon, when the devices we once used to maintain basic voice and text contact have made all the ephemera of everyday life (e-mail, social sites, games) so constantly just at reach. You look down to check the time walking across Liberty Square and "Oh...look at all the Facebook messages waiting." It has become more or less inescapable without a steely resolve to the contrary.

I am usually really good about not looking at my phone except to check the time, I am not a huge Facebook person, but apparently I get tagged at every ride by DW in the parks. I will say that is where I was when they got Bin Laden, I had at my phone and gotten the news, I actually said out loud, "holy crap they got Bin Laden" louder than I wish I had, because immediately everyone in the vicinity started looking at their phones and talking about it, doesn't really seem like something to be discussed in a magical place.

I'm not on vacation when I'm at Disney, so I check my phone from time to time. Not necessarily the news, but I have been on the Internet, looking up certain things in the parks. I just make sure to not be on my phone too much to preserve the battery.

Not in the parks but I mean, I do watch the TV after a long day at the parks to know if there's anything going on. I mean, if I get a complimentary newspaper or something, I'll glance the front page but then head straight to sports because that interests me the most!
