OVERVIEW:
Located in the heart of Discoveryland is a reimagined Space Mountain with a retro futuristic theme inspired by Jules Verne’s 1865 novel From the Earth to the Moon. This takes inspiration from the former attraction at Disneyland Paris. Despite this, it has more similarities to its successor, Space Mountain: Mission 2. Although the ride vehicles have a silver copper design, they take the modern version of the ride’s vehicles with shoulder vests.
Unlike the Parisian version of the ride, guests go in through a big building outside of the mountain. Here, guests are immersed in a Victorian-designed building with American flags hanging around (as the novel was set soon after the American Civil War.) All around the room are steampunx machines. On a telegraph, a woman’s voice gives them their mission to the moon.
Guests then proceed into a room where the sketches of the Baltimore Gun Club are displayed. This includes several futuristic-looking gun designs as well as the design for a giant cannon called the Columbiad Cannon, which will be used to launch guests to the moon.
Soon, guests will enter a loading area, where they get on their spacecraft. They pull down their lap bars and put their things in a pouch, and then they prepare for the ride.
RIDE EXPERIENCE:
The spacecraft moves through a tunnel and onto the Columbiad Cannon, which is pointed up the mountain and toward the top. It stops at the bottom of the cannon, and then, with a puff of smoke, the spacecraft launches. Up atop the mountain, the edge of the cannon releases a puff of smoke, giving outside guests the illusion that the cannon has fired, which inside the cannon, guests are fooled by screens that depict them moving through the sky and into outer space.
The ride vehicles approach the moon, but then they drop and go through an asteroid field. This involves an inversion and a turn afterwards, as well as a drop down. The vehicle then goes through a wormhole of red light and enters the inner solar system, going past planets in a corkscrew loop. Afterwards, it goes through another wormhole and ends up in a star space of comets, stars, and galaxies. Suddenly, a supernova explodes and the spacecraft has to dive and duck to escape, going through a third inversion before going up and then down into a tunnel, where a third wormhole transports them back to the station.
When returning to the station, guests get off their spacecraft and gather their belongings. The woman gives an exit spiel as they do.
POST-RIDE:
Guests follow a hallway to a place where their photos taken during the ride are displayed. They proceed through here and into the Baltimore Gun Club’s emporium. In the Gun Club’s emporium is Galaxy Stuff, which sells merchandise themed to the attraction.

BACKSTORY:
In 1872, Phileas Fogg had been able to pull off a great feat, to travel around the world in just 80 days. Jules Verne had met the man and learned his story, writing it down and publishing it as a book. With this, the two became good friends and shared their worlds with each other.
However, after Verne’s death in 1905, Fogg fell into despair. However, rather than grieving over his departed friend and going into depression, Fogg decided to find others like Verne who were seeing new visions of tomorrow. He went around the world for many years, meeting people like H. G. Wells and other science fiction authors and illustrators.
Then, in 1910, a rogue storm washed Fogg up in Discoveryland, where all of the visionaries of the past had their dreams made into reality. In this land, he met a group of scientists who were quite interested in his adventure and wanted others to have such an adventure. Although Fogg never agreed to this, calling it a “dangerous mistake,” Jeff Cotton would come to Discoveryland himself and give them permission.
Now, explorers coming to Discoveryland are allowed to follow in Fogg’s footsteps and embark on a globe-trotting adventure. What could possibly go wrong?
(This is one of the two major story attractions of the resort, the second being Kunlun Quest in Asian Gulf, but that will be discussed later. This attraction is made on a Rise of the Resistance-level scale, making it truly exciting. Similar to that attraction, guests go in with boarding groups to control wait times.)
QUEUE:
Guests walk into a retro futuristic expo, where several Steampunx-era machines are on display. Among them are airships, automobiles, and advanced trains. Looking up, guests see a sign saying how this is the vehicle expo of Discoveryland. Guests continue to go through the expo, seeing more retro futuristic machines.
PRE-SHOW:
Soon enough, guests will enter a Victorian room full of sketches for many machines. Behind glass, three 19th Century scientists, Edgar, Thaddeus, and Frank, are seen working with machines. Following a disastrous attempt to fly on a jet-pac, the scientists look and see the guests there.
Edgar: “Oh, what do we have here?”
Thaddeus: “Did they see that failed jet-pac launch?”
Frank: “Sure hope they didn’t. We were going to test these on people, and we can’t let them know that they are unstable.”
Thaddeus: “Wait a minute, are these members of that Grand Adventure Society?”
Edgar: “I don’t know, are they? Read that letter from Mr. Cotton again, Frank.”
Frank goes over to a table and reads a letter.
Frank: “Dear scientists of Discoveryland. I am sending you some of my associates to test your new gadgets in an adventure around the world. Fogg may never have approved of it, but I do.”
Edgar: “Ah, it still sounds nice even after the seventh time reading it.”
Thaddeus: “Guys, this is them. These are those associates. They are here to take our technology and go around the world, just like Professor Fogg did.”
Edgar: “They are? Well, that’s great. We should send them on their way.”
Frank: “Not yet, Edgar. It’s a little rude to not explain why they are doing this.”
Edgar: “Fine. So, a long time ago, we met this man named Phileas Fogg who traveled around the world in 80 days. We wanted to recreate this experience, but he wouldn’t let us because he said that it would be a dangerous mistake. However, we thought he was just being dramatic, so we kept on bargaining with him, and he kept saying no. He must’ve been fed up with us because he left for a long time, but recently, another member of the Society named Jeff Cotton has come and told us how we can do this with you guys. There, I said it. Happy now?”
Frank: “Yes.”
Thaddeus: “Anyways, so here’s how this is going to work. Your journey will begin where Fogg’s did in London. From there, you shall take an airship over Europe and to Cario. Then, you will take a boat to Bombay, then a train across India to Calcutta. You shall take a glider to Shanghai, and then a boat across the Pacific and to San Francisco. From there, you shall take a train to New York and then a new machine to return to London.”
Frank: “It is a long trip, but hopefully, it’ll all be worth it.”
Edgar: “Now let’s send them off. Open the portal to London, where they will board their airship.”
With this, a door opens and guests walk through it. In a nighttime London scene, guests walk towards the harbor, where a big airship is. They go inside and hold on to bars as the ship takes off, beginning the first part of the ride experience. From overhead, guests see the daytime sights of France, Switzerland, and Rome as they fly. As they head towards a dark Egyptian area, however, the airship shakes and is pulled closer to the ground. Edgar’s voice comes from the intercom.
Edgar: “Listen. We’ve got some good news and we’ve got some bad news. The good news is that you are arriving in Cairo. The bad news is that some British forces are there, and no offense, but I think they might be on to you. They’ve already hooked your airship and are pulling it into bay. Don’t worry, because Frank is coming to rescue you.”
When the airship doors open, a British officer stands there. They force them through the streets of Cario and to a small building. Inside this building are British maps and flags since Egypt was a British-controlled area in the 1870s. Guests are loaded into one of many interrogation rooms, where behind glass is a British officer, who gives an introduction.
Fix: “Good evening, people. My name is Detective Fix. I’ve been dispatched from London in search of a criminal named Edward Lynch. We suspect that he may be among you since we saw the crook run in the direction of your airship. Don’t try to do anything funny because I am a seeker of truth, and I can get it out of anyone no matter what.”
Just then, an officer comes in and tells them that some of the other people need attending to. With this, Fix leaves the room with a warning.
Fix: “Don’t you dare go anywhere. I warn you, it’ll be the worst mistake you ever make.”
Shortly after Fix leaves the room, a wall blows up. On the other side is a Discoveryland scientist sent by Frank. Guests sneak out into the Cario alleyway and board a trackless vehicle (similar to the ones in Rise of the Resistance, but retro futuristic). Two trackless vehicles are in the alley. Frank gives a safety spiel from the vehicles, explaining how he is controlling the vehicles from London and how he will be able to escort you back to London, but not before completing the journey around the world.
RIDE EXPERIENCE:
The vehicles go forwards through the streets of Cario. While boarding the ship, guests are spotted by British soldiers and are shot at, but they escape. Hiding in the cargo bay of the boat, the vehicles are transported to India.
Upon their arrival in India, guests travel through an Indian festival. Here, elephant-riding Indian people and belly dancers are seen. Here, the vehicles board a train and get into compartments. From there, they travel across the jungles of India, and eventually, they arrive in Calcutta. However, Fix is there and confronts the vehicles as they exit the train, holding a gun towards them.
Fix: “Thought you could get away, didn’t you? Well not this time!”
The vehicles then flee as British officers chase them through the Indian marketplace. The vehicles then board a smaller airship to take them to Shanghai. When closing the doors, however, a cannon is fired and the airship sinks.
Emerging in the forests of China, the vehicles go around, seeing giant pandas and monkeys. The vehicles travel through a small Chinese village and see several villagers. An old man then willingly takes them on his carriage to Shanghai.
When reaching Shanghai, the vehicles travel through the city. However, a group of mercenaries hired by Fix find them and travel to arrest them. Luckily, the vehicles board the ship to San Francisco just as the ship is sailing away. The mercenaries try to stop them, but the vehicles light some fireworks at the mercenaries and drive them away.
When arriving in San Francisco, the vehicles go through the city and board a train. However, Detective Fix is on the train, about to arrest them.
Fix: “I see that you’ve fallen right into my trap. There’s no escaping now.”
The vehicles turn around to escape, but it is too late, for the doors have closed behind them. The vehicles then go through the train as it goes across the desert. Fix corners them at the end, but Frank appears and takes him out.
Soon, the vehicles safely arrive in New York. Once there, they go out into the secret workshop at the harbor. There, they board a jet-pac flying machine, which was built by American engineers as well as Edgar, who appears and congratulates them for making it this far. The vehicles then board one of two of the flying machines, which starts a motion simulator part of the ride. The vehicle moves up and speeds over the sea. After traveling through a thunderstorm, during which the escape nearly fails, the vehicles crash in London, going through the Big Ben and landing at the harbor.
Upon arriving, Thaddeus greets them as they go to the unload station. Here, guests get off their vehicles and proceed into the final scene of the experience.
POST-RIDE:
Guests go into a gun shop but encounter an angry Detective Fix in there.
Fix: “There you are! I’ve had it up to here with you guys, but now I’m finally going to….”
Just then, Frank enters the room.
Frank: “Hey, why are you after these people anyways?”
Fix: “Don’t interrupt me, sir.”
Frank: “Hey, I’m just curious why you’re after these people.”
Fix: “Because Edward Lynch is among them.”
Frank: “Edward Lynch? He’s already been arrested and taken into custody. That happened before you even came after them.”
When hearing of this, Fix looks at the guests in an embarrassed way.
Fix: “Lynch is not among them? Well, now I feel stupid.”
Frank: “We all make mistakes, sir. It’s part of being human.”
Fix: “Don’t rub it in.”
Frank: “I guess this is why Fogg said that traveling the world was dangerous. If you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time, then things get ugly.”
Fix: “Exactly. Sorry for all the trouble I caused and I hope you guys enjoyed your little trip.”
Frank: “I think it’s time to let them back to Discoveryland.”
Fix: “What’s that?”
Frank: “Um, I said, let’s let them go back to…….Disneyland, yes. Go right through the portal and there you are. Thanks for traveling with us and we hope you come again.”
A door then opens and guests follow a secret passage back to Discoveryland. This brings them into the Aquatopia area, where they can see the boats going.
Join us tomorrow as we see other, smaller attractions in Discoveryland, such as Aquatopia and the Orbitron.
