Disney's Streaming Services: Disney+ (and Hulu, ESPN+, Star, & hotstar)

I’m pretty sure Lucas is holding any rerelease of the unedited OT. The Library of Congress (which has two copies of literally every film, book, and song that is released) doesn’t even have a copy of the original Star Wars, because Lucas is refusing to give them one. As much as I would love to watch the original OT again (in clear 2019 quality), I’m not going to hold my breath.

In other news, I just watched Roger Rabbit, and the picture quality for that film looks stunning on Disney+.

I understand that streaming agreements have a lot of ABC properties tied up, but I think sitcoms are sorely missed on Disney+. Fresh Off the Boat, Modern Family, Black-ish, The Middle, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m eventually going to watch Boy Meets World for the umpteempth time again, but I wish there were some newer shows listed.

Once Upon A Time should be included as well, that’s a no brainer.

Another peeve that I wish was fixed- all of these films and shows that Disney+ claims to have, but doesn’t at this time. Example - Infinity War. Netflix has the rights today, but Disney+ gets it on June 25, 2020. Ditto for the Mighty Ducks. I guess I just don’t understand why Disney+ has them in the library, when they won’t be available until next summer. Compare this to movies that will certainly be on Disney+ (Toy Story 4, Incredibles II, new Aladdin and Lion King), but are not promoted as being part of the library.
And some are a year out. That's just too long. I get a few months, but these 6+ month times are Disney trying to pad the library size. And they really don't need to. They just need to be honest and make the dates available on the website, or put a "new magic coming soon" section in so it doesnt show up while I'm browsing.

Yeah, I was thinking that as well. Simpsons is something, but there really should be other TV series on there. I've got to think that Disney should have the streaming rights to some family sitcom type shows that could be added to Disney+

That is the background soundtrack of my wife's life, so I noticed when they used it in the demo video back in the spring. It's coming.
Oh good. I stopped watching in Season 4 (I think), but I'd be willing to try to watch it again if it was available.

I get not including Grey's Anatomy (since that's more adult), but the family sitcoms are a no brainer (and there. are. so. many!!!)

The estimates from Wall Street analysts are Disney plus now has between 15 and 18 million customers in North America. Based on that and the number of foreign subscribers it would be reasonable for Disney Plus to have over 25 million worldwide wide customers by January 1. Disney is blowing away their prior estimates.

Again, there’s a lot of ridiculousness and misinformation is this pile. I’ll unpack this one-by-one.

Firstly, the article was published on October 17, 2019, so their Disney+ projections for this year are largely irrelevant. They put the number in there as a placeholder, which should have been exceedingly obvious. Disney didn’t start providing estimates until just before November, so it would have been irresponsible analysis if they did put in a realistic number in mid October.

Secondly, you largely missed the point of why I provided that link in the first place. I didn’t share it to downplay Disney+ success; I did it to dispel your crazy notion that Disney+ will not only topple Netflix, but maybe even shoot it down to third place in the streaming wars. No reasonable projection believes that will happen at all. Only the overly confident and somewhat blinded Disney stakeholders.

Finally, yes, I will continue to use that article as a basis because Statista is a reliable resource, and you negating it because the website, wisely, used a conservative placeholder number instead of a higher total based on then incomplete projection estimates is very disingenuous.

Your estimate isn’t conservative at all. It‘s as aggressive as it can possibly be.

Your “conservative“ projection has Disney+ beating Disney’s own internal projections by three years. Your analysis is way off.

And to take my post full circle, and bring this back to my initial point of dispelling the Netflix will fall. Netflix current has about 160 million estimated subscribers, and are expected to hold the lead with over 200 million in 5 years.

In short, Netflix isn't Falling to Disney anytime soon, let alone third place.

Your analysis reads like cheerleading, not actually based on reasonable measurable statistic.
Are you still sure my numbers are unreasonable? Disney Plus is blowing away Disney's original estimates.

Yes, they are still unreasonable, and they ignore 2 big factors because just focusing on the big 10 million subscriber count is a sexier notion.

1) The Verizon free for a year deal was huge. Nobody knows retention on this yet.

2) We have no statistics of retention based on people who signed up for the free seven day trial.

Yes, your “conservative” estimated are still unbelievable, and supported by fiction and cheerleading.

We don't have any info on retention for anyone whether they got the 3 year deal, the one year deal, or paying monthly, or having Verizon pay for them. All we really got is current subs regardless of source or package.

It seems current subs exceeded expectations. Now, does that translate into future exceptional subs? We'll see.

Disney's own future expectations is that there will be enough to make it profitable. Verizon's expectations is that it's such a desirable product that they'll pay for it and bundle it with their product for their customers in order to retain them.
