Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

I didn’t realize it breaking even was a given?

I think we have to look to this weekend for clarity.
The tale will be told by Sunday

If it’s strong and international picks up…it will end up doing pretty well…if not?…

Spider-Man is raking though…don’t know if that will be a big blow based on audience?

Looking at that list what a monster Home Alone was.

I still watch it every Christmas.
It can be argued that home alone is one of the most successful movies of all time based on budget, box office and longterm appeal

Not surprising considering John Hughes was one of the best screenwriters of all time

Could explain youth in an endearing way

Crazy this thread has gone from whether it’ll break a billion to whether it’ll break even in only a week.

Also interesting that a Miles Morales spider-man movie will likely be one of the highest grossing movies of the summer. It’s almost as if people don’t care what color the lead actor is when it’s a good story with a new take on the character playing a familiar role. Disney should take note and give us fresh stories with the characters we love rather than just retelling the same old stories with only minor (often controversial) changes.

Cruella being a great example of Disney doing exactly this… and it was by far the best of the live action movies.

A lot of people are going to be surprised (pleasant or not) at the hold TLM is about to see this weekend, despite ACTSV coming out (which itself looks to pull in over $100 million).

A company like Disney, doesn't set out to break even. I don't believe for a second that Disney actually believes that when a 200/250mil dollar production breaks even or falls short of profit, it's a success. They expect these major tent poles to make profit.
But according to @BuddyThomas it was a success because a random person on Facebook was inspired and for a few days it had the top selling doll on Amazon (TLM is now no longer the top selling doll, top selling mermaid toy, or top selling Disney toy)

I think it will have around a 50% drop.

That’s a very decent hold domestically. The problem is what will happen internationally.

If it holds domestically this weekend it basically just means it has a chance to break even.

I saw the movie tonight with my sister and mom. We all loved it. Halle… Halle. My god. She had me crying throughout the movie. And Melissa McCarthy. Fantastic performance. The whole cast was very enjoyable. My sister pointed out that we had experienced a full-circle moment. Our mom took us to see all the Disney movies as kids, and now we returned the theaters together again to see a similar classic we’d seen many years ago.

I’ve never seen a company where the FANS modify the narrative to fit the most “believable” excuse for failure in real time…

Disney expects $1 bil from every tentpole and longterm cross sales of high profit, low overhead product shipped directly from China to create gravy for its stockholders for decades.

It started 75 years ago…was greatly enhanced by Eisner/wells…and has slowly been drug down by “analysis based” plot lines and creative mandates.

It has always been…and always will be…about character and story

It was never about color (at least in modern times)…and it was never if they had a boyfriend or a girlfriend

Good stories and character get to your emotional switchboard and keep you coming back for more.

Disney can and I hope will pivot back to this formula?
And will avoid completely avoidable missteps…like making Star Wars that are completely unwatchable and bring zero longterm/repeat interest…
…now excuse me, I’m sure the empire strikes back is on cable…somewhere…right now 🤪

That’s a rather bold prediction…

…I can see it because miles morales may not eat into the segment that would go sss mermaid to a huge extent?

I don’t think it’s rather bold. It should still be ok domestically. Look at the Demos. Heck Spider-Man may even help Mermaid with the boys going to see Spidy and girls to see Mermaid.

The problem is what will happen internationally.

For this thing to make a Billion it would have to perform a miracle.

It might get a small pop in Europe because of a vacation weekend.

Let’s say it drops 50% this weekend (great hold)
It still needs to continue to perform well to break even.

I don’t know if you have seen the movie but it’s just kinda fine. I don’t know how much word of mouth it’s going to get. It’s not a movie you run out of the theater screaming Again!! Again!!

I have not seen it…that doesn’t mean I will not.

I believe that it is a retelling of little mermaid with some good performance…that’s the buzz and no reason to doubt it.

I more think that generally the box office is by and large still down…and that the live action remakes are saturating…it’s about the 12-15th one if you include the D+ stuff.

The Little Mermaid is still Poised to keep slightly ahead of Aladdin at this point in their runs with what is looking to be a pretty good hold this weekend… not the massive drop off some were gleefully boasting about on here….Aladdin topped off at 355 million domestically by the end of it’s run
Aladdin was before the pandemic turning box office on its ear
How did it fare internationally?
