Disney's Live Action The Little Mermaid

I found details of the story I referred to earlier:

I’m not looking to convince you—that’s precisely my point. I’m simply explaining how the discourse has changed, regardless of where each of us may personally stand on the issue.
And my point was, if people are going to tell you that you're wrong, than there should be an answer as to why when asked. Not vague roundabout statements. I get the whole consent issue, I have two daughters. But there is no consent issue in the song, in the context of the movie. If the other side sees something that I don't, that's fine. I'd just like to know what it is they see.

I’m not saying you’re wrong. As my last few posts have tried to make clear, the topic doesn’t have to be framed in those terms.

Menken explained it succinctly. The Princeton link I provided above offers a much fuller explanation. The information you seek is readily available.

Could you please provide a quote? I think I know what you’re referring to, and if I’m right, you’re totally mangling—and thereby misrepresenting—what they said.
I must apologise to @Brer Panther, because he wasn’t referring to what I thought he was. These are the words he must have had in mind (spoken by the remake’s producer):

In the original movie, it felt like Jasmine didn't have as compelling a goal. Her main aim was to find the love of her life.

In this case, the romance is important, but she also wants to see more of Agrabah, and take more of a leadership role in ruling the city. Her character has a much stronger journey.

Apart from the bolded, this is indeed a very unfair and inaccurate way to talk about the animated Jasmine, and @Brer Panther was right to call it out as “put[ting] down the original”, though I don’t agree with his claim that such disparagement is a usual feature of Disney’s promotion of the remakes.

I'd bet it's either they think they can sell this as a different song to get people to go back and buy the original along with this one,
Indeed, I always buy the original version, long play version, radio version and the Kidz Bop version of every song!!!

Let me add (though I think I implied as much earlier) that I myself do not regard the original lyrics as problematic. That doesn’t mean, however, that I can’t at least try to understand why others may feel differently.
I think within the context of the movie; it's obvious that "Kiss the Girl" is consensual as it's a very unique circumstance where Ariel is literally incapable of speaking and has an entire team of animal sidekicks assembled to convince Eric to kiss her so she's not forever doomed to be Ursula's prisoner.

HOWEVER, stripped of the original context of the movie, I can see why "It don't take a word, not a single word, go on and kiss the girl" may seem problematic. For that reason, I'm not too upset about the lyrics for Kiss the Girl being slightly modified.

Poor Unfortunate Souls doesn't need to be censored as it's a villain song. Villains are inherently problematic!

Why has no one talked about the real problem here... No one asked Eric for consent. Ariel and her cohorts are gaslighting and coercing him into a situation he may not have consented to when not under such extreme pressure. Every creature within a mile was pressuring him into kissing her and giving him those thoughts.

Prince Eric has been the victim all along. Ariel is the obvious deviant here... Absolutely disgusting and problematic.

But Prince Eric is a white male invader, he deserves it, right?

The “good news” is with Strange World and Lightyear losing a combined quarter of a billion dollars, the bar for this will be very low.

Let’s hope it doesn’t make this year’s list.

I think, at worst, the Little Mermaid will underperform. I can't see it losing money like Lightyear or Strange World.

Yea there's enough Disney fanatics, especially for a Renaissance film, to make this do really well. It would be an absolute shocker if this doesn't do great. Even if it is an absolute train wreck, it will still perform. It will be the next couple that could have problems if this isn't great.

I can but I'd attribute it to Disney+ more than anything. Why pay to see a movie in theaters when you can see it for “free” at home in a couple months?

Disney created a box office mess with D+, they’ll have to address that at some point.

I think they are trying to by delaying when movies will be available on Disney Plus. Avatar: The Way of Water came out in December and it's still not on the service. Could be awhile before it goes to Disney Plus.

So which will do worst, Little Mermaid or The Marvels? I'm betting Little Mermaid but not by much.
My guess is the marvels will make less. I feel like the little mermaid has a pretty big built in base that is going to show up. The marvels is captain marvel, who a huge contingent of fans can't stand, and 2 other heroes that were on D+ shows that not a lot of people watched. I'd guess the Marvels has less going for it. It will be interesting to see.
