I made my first return visit to DHS this afternoon amidst the crazy heat; but I really needed to get out of the house. A few observations on my first day back at this park since the re-opening
  1. - As feared, lots and lots of guests are doing everything they can to bypass the mask rules.
    1. In the queue for MMRR, it felt like nearly 25% of those in line had decided they should use this opportunity to get food and drink and take their masks off 'because they were eating' while in the queue. They were just chomping away at whatever it was they had and made no pretense, they just took the masks off. -This cannot be allowed to continue
    2. Countless guests just sit down on a random bench and take their masks off.-This cannot be allowed to continue
    3. Only once did I see a CM correct a group that was doing this and tell them they had to put the masks back on while sitting at a table on Galaxy's Edge
  2. Countless people just cannot seem to grasp the basic concepts of distancing. They are just walking randomly all over the place with zero regard for anyone else around them. If you are coming up to a curve in the path and the curb is on your right, those coming at you will come so close I had to jump up on the curb multiple times to maintain distance.
    1. I lost count of the number of times I had to look behind myself in a queue to find the group behind me was inches away and totally ignoring the well-marked separations on the floor/ground. Oblivious guests will cause conflicts in the queues by not paying attention to the distancing requirements.
  3. Disney has absolutely no protocol in place when an attraction breaks down. The Plexi barriers in queues do not go all the way to the floor, they stop at the bottom cross-rail of the railing between the lanes. The minute the attraction shuts down, half the people in the queue sit down on the ground/floor and now there is no physical barrier between the people in adjacent rows.
  4. In addition to everyone sitting on the ground, they are actually telling people to make their way back to the entrance of the attraction if they do not want to wait. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to maintain distancing if someone actually does this but that was the non-recorded announcement made on Slinky Dog this afternoon. -This cannot be allowed to continue
The bottom line of this all is that Disney has put in most of the right protocols but far too many selfish guests are going to totally screw this up because it's all about them and they just keep ignoring the rules. If guests keep flouting the rules, we are going to have issues that will in the end have a very, very negative impact on the whole thing.

And before you try to go off on me that "It's hot out" don't waste your time. I know exactly how hot it is, I was there and I live in this climate. If you are unwilling or unable to follow the rules, please do not visit the parks- you are going to screw it up for everyone else including the CM's. Just do not go if you are unwilling to follow the rules.

Having said all of this, over the course of 5 hours in the park this afternoon I managed to get on Runaway Railway, Slinky Dog, Swirling Saucers, Star Tours and Rise of the Resistance in addition to having lunch at Backlot Express. I enjoyed the low crowds but the behavior of selfish and oblivious guests will likely make me rethink my future visiting plans.

I think it was a very insightful post on your part and folks can take the info any way they wish. Truth be told, there is nothing here that surprises me. You have confirmed what is going on in a lot of tourist destinations this summer.

So sorry things were like that at Studios. We’ve been here a week and done Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and Epcot for a couple days each and actually been surprised the other direction. We've seen almost zero people with masks off or pulled down. Yes, a couple folks have had them down while eating or drinking and walking, but overall a very small number (well under 10% and even better today after the rules were clarified). We have seen multiple CMs ask people to put masks back on or pull them back up over their nose - in lines and getting on and off rides. Also today lots of CMs with little signs for reminders that masks can only come off when stopping somewhere to eat. We've only had one person really infringe on distancing and it was a little kid in the Flight of Passage line and dad corralled them pretty quickly. We've seen a few people who don't pay total attention to the lines on the ground, but I'd put that number at less than 5% (and that's generous, it's closer to 1% really) and they still kept their distance. We have been dreading Studios and tomorrow will be our first time there on this trip, so I can only hope that the issues that you dealt with today are the product of the weekend crowd and not a larger issue!

Just a note - we have seen VERY few people trying to get around the mask rule in our 6 days on site. But we have yet to go to Studios (2 days each at AK, MK, and Epcot). Definitely less than 10%. We've had no issues with distancing at the other 3 parks. Will be heading into Studios tomorrow and am dreading it a bit after that post... but, please don't think that the issues are that bad all over the parks as we haven't seen that at all in our experiences this week.

I’m glad to hear what I experienced at Studios may not be happening at other parks. I saw a Twitter post from the owner of BlogMickey this afternoon expressing the same frustrations I expressed above which indicates there are some adjustments needed at DHS. He indicated his experience was so concerning he felt it necessary to leave the park and stopped at Guest Services to share his experiences. There is more work needed to get the proper controls in place and aggressively enforced at DHS.

On the flip side, the wait times were amazing.

I didn’t experience any of these issues when I was at the Passholder preview at MK last week.

The overall reports plus my personal experiences at MK and AK suggest that Hollywood Studios is the disaster zone. I’m going Tuesday so I’ll find out for myself how bad it is.

I will say this: some of us walk faster than others so if a family wants to remain socially distant they need to stop spreading out to take up the entire walkway.

BlogMickey had a similar experience at ROTR yesterday; they got stuck in the long corridor when the ride went down temporarily. Here’s the series of tweets plus pictures!:

BlogMickey were given another pass to come back later in the day, in which they did near park close it seems:

Walk-through of Galaxy's Edge from the weekend

Thanks, Steve. That looks to be at about, what, 10:30am? We are heading there today and trying to gauge what we are likely in for with the crowd (yeah, I know weekend will be worse than today, but still gives us an idea).

The only major concern in your post is the ride breakdown and people sitting in the queue/squeezing by to exit issue. People sitting on a random bench to remove a mask to eat or drink isn't a concern outdoors. Passing close to people on an outdoor pathway isn't really a concern either unless they aren't wearing a mask and cough or sneeze on you.

Even the experts say that spread primarily happens with prolonged, close contact.

Were you able to easily obtain a boarding group for RotR?

Wow, that closed part of the queue looks more like a “contamination zone” than anything else, but then again it’s not as bad as the plane ride to get to WDW if they flew there.
