I just think there was something nice about going around the back of the island and being completely secluded from the rest of the park.

Plus- it made the canoe ride a much more demanding attraction, haha!
I so agree. While the changes to the river were well done, I loved the backside of the river experience in the before-times. While I live on the edge between civilization and wilderness, when at Disneyland in the middle of SoCal's urban sprawl, I loved the remote wild feeling that the canoe experience provided. It somehow was an almost transcendent few minutes and a respite from the often frantic pace of the park experience.

It's just a shame we lost Cascade Peak. The longer rivers with more trees, plus Cascade Peak was sort of the best of both worlds between what was there in '15 and what's there now. I'm sure I considered heading out to WDW at some point- but honestly right now I have no desire to visit. My group is in the early stages of planning a trip to Paris in 2023ish, and Tokyo once the new stuff there is open. My tastes lean heavily towards vintage Disneyland- which Tokyo has plenty of, and Tony Baxter led stuff- which Paris is. Not to mention Tokyo Disney Sea.
I had completely forgotten about Cascade Peak, probably because the only visit to Disneyland I made where it was still around was when I was seven. That is absolutely the sort of thing that the final stretch is missing to give the thing a sense of payoff-and it's interesting that no one really decided something like that was necessary for the subsequent rivers. I'll grant that the feeling of remove was greater in the original river, though I still would side with the current version overall.

Paris and Tokyo are 100% a better use of your time than WDW right now. I just keep hoping that at some point Florida will get its stuff together. Then again, maybe I shouldn't spend TOO much time hoping for that, because I can't really pretend Orlando is a comparable destination to any of the other cities that have Disney Theme Parks adjacent to them.

Isn't the trestle bridge sort of the new version of that (though not hidden)?

To a point, but I was referring more to Cascade Peak's placement than anything else. Cascade Peak was located, to my understanding, on the very last stretch of the river, not terribly far from where the boats dock. That meant it conceivably would have served not only as a landmark, but also as a payoff for the last stretch of the journey, a finale of sorts.

As opposed to now where there's really nothing interesting/unique to see or look at once you pass the redone ROA enhancements. It's easily the weakest, least interesting part of the journey. And that's not something that can blamed on the GE-inspired redoing of the river either, because that stretch is pretty much the same as it was before the area was redone.

I actually like that stretch because it’s that last little bit of the ROA that still feels remote after the 2019 changes.

It is interesting- with the shortened river and the extended walkway to Galaxy's Edge, it really never does feel secluded. There was an undeniable charm the old rivers had the new ones lack- and it's a shame.

IIRC, Cascade Peak was removed to give better sight lines for Geyser Mountain that was planned for the Big Thunder Ranch area. Geyser Mountain was to be Disneyland's version of the Tower of Terror but themed as a mining elevator system. Since DCA was in big trouble and Geyser Mountain cost too much, they built the Paris version of the ToT instead.

Cascade Peak was just poorly maintained for its last few years. It was torn down in 1998, well before Disney’s California Adventure was opened.

Which was also the time they were planning out site lines for Geyser Mountain. There are a lot of things that are poorly maintained they never got rid of.
