Awhile ago, I almost posted flippantly that In&Out drive-throughs should be co-opted for vaccinations. They really move customers.
Add in Raising Cane's and Chick-Fil-A and we could have everyone vaccinated before the end of January, all with a smile.Awhile ago, I almost posted flippantly that In&Out drive-throughs should be co-opted for vaccinations. They really move customers.

Add to that Novavax which has 89.3% effectiveness overall with 2 shots but less against the newer variants:Well Johnson and Johnson released their data. It’s effectiveness is 66% outside of the US. In the US it fared a bit better at 72% effectiveness. Both are for preventing symptomatic infection but it’s 85% effective at preventing severe cases. Despite the fact it’s less effective than both Pfizer and Moderna, it’s still above the FDA requirements for a vaccine candidate to be at least 50% effective and being only one shot (for now) and easier storage will still make it attractive to those distributors without ultra cold storage

One thing of note they found that secondary infections can occur with the new variants. So even if you've had the original strain you can get infected again from any of the newer variants.

They were also working on a combo flu and Covid19 vaccine to be ready by next fall.
Not to mention, it’s one-dose-and-done. That should help ease the strain on personnel and facilities needed to administer the shots.Well Johnson and Johnson released their data. Honestly my friend I'd suggest going and getting either the Pfizer or Moderna one now if you can. The one shot J&J vaccine as shown isn't as effective with any of the variants of COVID19 currently out there. With several of them being more contagious its worth it to get the two shot vaccine now rather than waiting. Just my opinion, better to be safe.Othena update from my text group.
The texting group lit up like a Christmas tree yesterday morning, as suddenly the Othena App is responsive and effective. Everyone was able to get an appointment at Soka University for Friday (now today) and Saturday (tomorrow). I logged on late last night and was eligible to make an appointment for Soka University for any hour of the day this weekend. But I am still holding off for the one-shot option, at least for now.
Everyone in the texting group avoided the Disneyland Supersite, even though four of us live in Villa Park and one couple lives in Tustin Ranch and all are much closer to Disneyland than we are to Aliso Viejo.
But with this rain and cold, word is now out that Disneyland's outdoor sprawl of tents and giant surface parking lots is not nearly as good as Soka University's parking structure with elevators that dump you out directly across a small campus street from the Soka University gym. Go Lions!

I've had a busy, fun weekend topped off by this afternoon's adventure to a Covid Vaccine Supersite with an old friend, as I mentioned above. I knew she was out being sociable the last few months and didn't think she was too concerned about Covid as she is in good health, but according to her "I just need to shut up my kids and get them to stop worrying!" (Her grown children live out of state.)

Her appointment made thru the Othena App was for 3:00pm today, Sunday. We literally pulled off of Woods Canyon Drive and into the main entrance of Soka University campus at the stroke of 3:00pm. She had a Pfizer shot in her arm exactly 28 minutes later!
There were some lines and three different check-ins, but every line shuffled along quickly like a well-oiled Omnimover and nothing took more than 2 minutes at each step of the process. Very impressive!
The Soka campus setup was compact, and only required about 50 yards of walking from the parking structure to the gym entrance.
Your first step is a preliminary car screening, where they confirm your appointment in their system and scan everyone's temperature that is in the car. Then you are directed to the 4 level parking structure across this street from the gym.

They had many volunteers directing cars through the parking structure, and there were plenty of spaces. We parked 20 feet from the elevator. You go down to the ground level and are assigned a check-in table, where they validated her name and that her California ID had an OC address, and gave her some informational paperwork. This check-in was conducted inside the parking structure and only took 2 minutes.

Then you walked across the street and along a sidewalk to the gym, where an outdoor tent had three switchbacks of line to get in. Except it was Socialy Distanced line, and you just kept walking along like you were boarding the Little Mermaid ride, and this "line" only took about 3 minutes before you were inside the gym.

There were volunteers in safety vests directing traffic, answering questions, or just saying hello all along the sidewalks leading to the gym. (There was an alternate parking lot on the other side of the gym for those in wheelchairs or walkers). Signage was uniform and clear and very well thought out. The mood among all staff members was upbeat and friendly. Everyone seemed to know what they were doing, with a smile underneath their masks.

Within a few minutes we were inside the gym itself, where we went to a secondary screening only because my friend takes blood thinners. So a very nice doctor sat down with her, discussed exactly what medications she takes for her blood pressure, and cleared her to receive the shot. The very kind doctor told us that was a mere formality, as the nurse would use the smallest needle anyway because she is an elderly female with small arms. But some overweight patients get a larger needle that can be something to note if you take blood thinners.
Note the clock on the big screen. This is moments before she got her shot, and it's 3:26pm, 26 minutes after we first drove onto the Soka campus. Impressive!

The shot took just a few moments. The nurse was fast and kind and an expert needler. There was no pain. Then we went off to the side of the gym where they had lots of chairs set up and nurses and doctors in white coats roaming through the post-shot waiting area. This is where you waited your 15 minutes "observational period" (thus the giant clock on the movie screen), and the medical staff there stopped and asked how everyone was doing and just chatted a bit, answered questions, and were just generally pleasant.

And with that, she was done! She was given a Vaccine Card that has her return appointment for her second Pfizer shot later in February, although she can go onto the Othena App and reschedule it if she doesn't like that specific date and time.
I'm still waiting for the Johnson&Johnson one-shot option, but seeing how easy and fast and well managed the Soka University site was today I would be willing to change my mind if the Johnson&Johnson one-shot gets delayed or is unavailable in California for whatever reason.
Bravo to the volunteers and paid staff there! I was quite impressed. If my lady friend had been a faster walker, or we had been speedier in general, we probably could have shaved 5 minutes off that 28 minute long process. We weren't hurrying this afternoon.
Very impressive stuff! And it was all held indoors and with covered parking, out of the rain and winter elements! Perfectly safe indoor operation, and very well operated!
That all sounds very efficient and well managed. I'd be happy to experience that as soon as possible, speaking as someone a few years younger than the 65 barrier right now with heart damage. But the drive-up option without even having to get out of your car like my brother experienced in Sacramento sounds even better.
