if nobody thought it they wouldn't do it....its called theater for a reason. it is done to make people feel safe. if nobody cares than they wouldn't do it.

Right. I'm sure they all carry toy guns and Orange County Sheriffs Deputies are just for show.

There's a difference between safe and safer. It doesn't eliminate all threats, nothing does. But it does eliminate some. Obviously it makes some people feel safer but I don't think it makes them feel like they are magically safe.

It's not less but that's not the point.

It is less; I just checked today's admission prices. Regardless, I'm not sure why we're arguing this since it seems we agree otherwise, and I'm not even the one who brought price up originally (nor do I even think it should be a factor)

It's pretty easy to spot what security line you don't want to be in. As you walk up, just watch how fast the "guard" goes through a bag. If the search is still going by the time I am close, I pick another line. If they have a flashlight in their hands, I find another line. Some "guards" seem to be looking for items so small, they would be less of a weapon than sharp piece of popsicle stick. I want the guard who is focused on guns. It's pretty easy to feel around and rule out areas of a bag, and not waste time looking inside my eyeglass case, or to bend a bag of beef jerky. While I don't worry about bad guys, I do worry about legal gun owners "forgetting" that they brought one.

In light of how many people visit WDW annually, and how bad it would be overall if there was some kind of attack or shooting to happen inside the parks, this is a definitely good thing. And this spending doesn't even move the needle on ticket prices. I don't understand, however, why all guests do not go through the metal detectors, like at Universal and DL.

Depends on the day.

And you're right that's why I said it doesn't matter since we agree.

The searches on the front aren’t the deterant, the true deterant is people knowing that there are undercover officers who are armed and will kick their sweet . People who want to cause harm to strangers want maximum impact, knowing they could be stopped in their tracks is a mental deterant to these nutters....but that doesn’t mean someone wouldn’t attempt it.

meh I agree use them if they are there but if you think they make you magically safe your also wrong.

First, while with enough determination one can find a way to do damage, deterrents certainly help.
Second, it would look really bad if something happens and it's found that security was lacking in comparison to competitors.
Third, it can be descriminatory to pull aside someone, especially when there are no statistics to back certain assumptions.
Fourth, exactly as you point out, more security makes people feel safer.

You can holler "security theater" all day, but there are proven results.

Must I also remind everyone that there are multiple occasions on which people tried to sneak a gun into the Magic Kingdom and got caught, or "scouted it out" and decided against it?

It's security theater because the entire thing is done under the implication of protecting us from terrorism, when it does no such thing.

Yes, yes, a few people have been prevented from bringing guns in - but there is no evidence they were intending to do anything with them. It's just those idiots who think they have to carry one everywhere. I don't want them in there, either, and I think those people are sad, fearful souls, but there is no evidence anyone was protected from anything.

If Disney were actually serious they would be at the very least swabbing, if not thoroughly inspecting, every stroller brought in. You could get an arsenal in there with some of those SUV sized things.

That said, as we just learned from Vegas - the front gate of the parks is not where the security really needs to be worried about if they are trying to prevent some mass shooting.

I have the typical cop haircut and I can tell you, even when I am pushing my daughters in their stroller, I get asked to walk through. It never fails. Um, hello, I'm the good guy here. It may seem that they are going after single males.

I didn't say they are only targeting single males. I'm just expressing the fact that it's not "random" as some people are saying - there is definite profiling going on.

I'd like to add that I've never been pulled aside. It's most certainly due to my profound handsomeness and captivating smile.

Okay. And you have absolutely no way of knowing that security hasn't protected the parks from an attack. Sorry, I can't agree that security is useless.

I’m a male 6’2” with short hair and facial hair. It never failed I was always “randomly” selected.

There biggest “target” on who to “randomly” select is overwhelmingly male (85% male 15% female) would be my guess.

Disney World needs to stop fooling us with “random” screenings and have every single person go through them.

I learned to take my sunglasses off when going through...Granted not a 100% thing, but I noticed I didn't get pulled aside as much with them off b/c I think they can give a quick judgement by looking at your eyes as to whether you're apprehensive or not and they need to take things a step further. I'll see in a few weeks how things compare to a year ago.
