The Epcot Manifesto
So, if as a first timer to this race I have some questions, you think it's better to start a new thread out in the main running forum, or put them here.
Things like "How to handle the night start time when I always train in the morning?" and "What and when to eat before the 10pm start time", etc. Just general things that could likely apply to any night event, but are really more targeted towards this race in particular.
I dont want to blast the forum with new threads if they should be handled in here under this one.

Definitely feel free to start a new thread...I bet there's a good chance you'll get pointed right back here though. :p

This will be my first night race too, and like you I always run in the morning. Right now I have a reservation at Via Napoli at 4:30 ish, so I'm planning on eating there and then having a bagel with peanut butter around 9PM. I've heard people say they prefer to have a big lunch followed by a snack for dinner, and I'm pretty sure that won't work for me. I think I'd get way too hungry.

I am planning on doing a couple of "dress rehearsals" in October with my long runs 8-10 miles). I'm going to try to schedule things pretty close to how they will be on race day and if something doesn't work I'll adjust my plans. I think you need to pick a day or two to try things out and see what works for you.

@cloe111479 - you'd better believe that map will be posted here! ;) I'm surprised it's not up yet based on last year's timeline, but in looking at runDisney.com they don't even have maps up for Disneyland yet, and that's a little over a month away. So who knows what's going on down there.

I've heard Disneyland isn't posted because there's a minor change to the course due to construction heading towards Angels stadium.

As far as W&D, I wouldn't expect a change in course this year. Unless, they decide to not start at WWoS

Here's what Galloway has written in both recent runDisney Tower 10 miler and Wine and Dine program guides concerning running at night, training at night, and eating properly hours before a night race. Hope these two images help.

Day of race fuel intake (last graph first column, first graph top of second column). Plug in Nov. 9, 2013 instead of Nov. 10, since this is from the 2012 W&D program guide.

My parents accompanied me to Disney World while I ran the 2012 Tower 10 miler. On race day we visited only one park, Animal Kingdom. We got a late start, arriving to Animal Kingdom close to 10am. We did what we wanted to but my parents were cautious of me staying off my feet, drinking enough fluids, eating correctly, stuff like that.

I ate a healthy meal at Flame Tree BBQ and we called it a day at the park by 3pm. Mom and Dad let me rest at Shades and I got a nap in. It took a while to get from Shades to the Boardwalk (monorail to Magic Kingdom then bus to Boardwalk, then another bus from Boardwalk to Hollywood Studios). After meeting WDW Magic runners at a pre-race meet and greet, waiting to run the race, running 10.5 in less than 2 hours, and the afterparty, we left around 3am.

The only thing I forgot when I left Shades for the race was water. I noticed several runners on the second bus to the corrals had water bottles. Luckily Disney staffers set out a water station in the corrals and I had a cup of water before heading to the chute to the starting line.

Well, common thought tends to be that you want to try to simulate the environment of the race as much as possible prior to running it. So training for a run in a warmer climate, try turning the heat up. Training for a night time race, try doing some runs at night. That will be the best way for you to see how your body will adapt. Buy a $15 headlamp, and go hit the town track for an hour or so late one night. Or if you have a TM, hop on that. Not exactly the same as a race would be, but not many people have the ability to run a road course safely that late at night. Everyone will be different. For the first W&D, I ran the 5k in the AM, spent the day hitting up 3 parks, had dinner at BlueZoo, and then ran the half that evening. I could do it, but it's not something I would recommend for most people. You may find that you need a few hours rest beforehand, along with a light dinner. Or you may find that you can handle a huge dinner, and working in the yard all day.

RE food, anything from dinner will really be a waste. I wouldn't recommend anything heavy, large, or spicy. Your body really won't have started to process it that much, so it will be sitting in your stomach. Lunch will be at least partially processed, but breakfast will be your real last good meal. (It takes like 12-16 hours to process food if I recall correctly) Much like how most people advocate grabbing a bagel, banana, something similar pre morning run, you want a light dinner that serves to keep you satiated, without having too much sloshing around. I usually shoot for a reasonably light dinner at 5-6, with a snack just before heading to the corral. A day or two before is when you want to make sure you do any loading of fuel.

If you read back through the earlier pages of this thread, and also the ToT thread, you should find some other suggestions and thoughts.

Smart advice. Too bad I didn't follow it before the TOT13K in 2009. I had a huge dinner at Le Cellier finishing at 8pm before the 10pm race. Fortunately I was just running it for fun and not for time because I felt that steak, potatoes, cheddar soup, pretzel bread, and chocolate cake sloshing around my stomach the whole race. I'd never run at night before, but I don't think that affected me nearly as much as eating so much right before running (or from hitting the parks from sun up til sun down for the 5 days previously!). Luckily, I knew I could run 13K easy so I wasn't too concerned and just did whatever I wanted to before running the race that last night of our trip.

I should probably keep my mouth shut, but New Balance is having a W&D contest. You can enter every day until 7/31 for a chance at 2 W&D entries, WDW resort, airfare, etc. If I win I'll go. :)

I guess if I haven't been notified by now, I haven't won. :(

Hello fellow Wine & Diners! How are things with everyone??

I just got back from vacation on Tuesday and pretty much didn't run at all, so I'm trying to recover from that. I managed to get in 15 miles last week but they weren't pretty. Lesson learned - don't hang up the running shoes while out of town and take it easy on desserts. :banghead: This is definitely something I need to keep in mind as I have a cruise coming up in a little over a month...

Anyway, I have a half on September 28 (that's the main one I'm training for right now), followed by another on October 6 (probably not my brightest idea), and from then I guess I'll just do some maintenance stuff until Wine & Dine, which is a little more than 3 months away! Wahoo!

Also, in case anyone missed it, Disney released room discounts that fall over Wine & Dine weekend. Unfortunately there's no availability at French Quarter (even though it's one of the resorts listed in the offer...and the offer just came out like 2 days ago...???) which is where we are booked right now. Discounted rooms at Riverside were about $10 more than what we're paying for FQ (king bed though) and there are discounted rooms available at CBR (about $100 less than what we're paying for FQ), but I'm really not interested in staying there. So for the first time ever we'll actually be staying at a resort and paying rack rate. Ouch.

Oh, ALSO...I brought my husband's after-party ticket online on Saturday. A couple of things...

1. The tickets for the after-party are sold through ESPN Wide World of Sports, not Active.com.
2. After I put my order in I got an email that says my order is pending and that I'll get a second email with my confirmation number when the order goes through. So my order is not complete yet. At the bottom of the email it says that their office hours are M-F 9-5, so that combined with the fact that my order is "pending" makes me thing someone physically has to do something it during office hours. If I don't get a confirmation number by the end of the day today I'm calling them tomorrow.

Just wanted to put this out there for anyone else buying after-party tickets! I'll post an update whenever I have one.

@Ariel484 -- I didn't order an after party ticket, but I did order my park tickets through the site and got it about a week after my order. Hope you get it soon. :)
Glad you posted this, I forgot to update...

I emailed DisneySportsTickets today and 30 minutes later the confirmation was in my inbox. Apparently they had issues with the system not sending out confirmations over the weekend so someone looked it up and sent it to me. Crises averted! :)

Glad it worked out!

Less than 100 days now! Trip is getting closer. :) Getting excited, and getting to a harder part of my training. (and in the 100+ heat index too, but thats New Orleans)

@cloe111479 - my brother lives in your area!! :)

Well, after getting back from vacation I've caught a cold. It was at its worst Monday night/all day yesterday so I slept in and skipped my scheduled 3-miler yesterday morning. I fell asleep after work off and on starting at 7PM and ended up going to be by 9:30, which is unheard of for me. I was afraid this thing would turn into a sinus infection since I had one around this time of the year last year but today I feel TONS better. Back to regular running tomorrow!

92.5 days until the race!! :joyfull:

While packing and prepping for the Disneyland Half, wanted to throw this out there early. Pre-race meet and greet with WDW Magic runners while we stretch and relax before the half. I believe the corrals will be in the parking lot at the ESPN sports complex, so to get away, like I and several others did at the 2012 Tower of Terror 10 miler, why don't we meet a little out of the way, up the stairs near the kiosk, in between the baseball stadium and the Jostens Arena?

In 2012 for the Tower 10 miler we all met near the tram drop off near the flags and main topiary display at Hollywood Studios, It was just far away enough to get away from the corral madness. Plus there were bathrooms and a water fountain!

Interested? No time set, but since the run starts at 10pm, we will be locked in our corrals by 9:15pm. Maybe we can meet for 30-45 minutes, between 8-8:45pm or so? Just thinking, but waiting to see where the corrals will be set up for the race.
