Disney to Reveal Ambitious Star Wars Plans

Don't expect anything to open in Orlando any sooner than 2019/2020 timeframe.

Agreed. Just from a business standpoint, they see Pandora bring people in from 2016-2018, so it would only make sense (from a pencil pusher's perspective) to not open anything else new during that time.

Of course, we all know that Pandora's impact is going to be minimal at best, but Iger and Staggs have to justify the expenditure. If WDW has any kind of increase in attendance, you know they will point to Avatar as the main reason why.

Saddest thing I've read all day - but I'd rather they take their time and make it amazing than rush to open something mediocre. Good things come to those who wait. Right?

I've been saying it on these forums for at least six months. The last I heard, they were waiting until the movie was released to make sure it would be a success before spending the money in Orlando. Of course that info is 3-4 months old and may have changed.

They're going to take their time, yes. Spreads the construction costs out over multiple quarters & fiscal years.

I notice that it says "Disney Parks"....I wouldn't hold my breath for too much in Florida.

You are correct. Assuming they actually build some Star Wars stuff..... I'm sure it will be in California first, then maybe Orlando. Maybe.

Dont forget DisneyShip! Likely going to be on the high seas before anywhere else, IMO.

They aren't taking their time "to make it right." That's just CEO double speak.

They're taking their time in order to spread out the new attractions. DL is getting Iron Man and WDW is getting Pandora.

In their line of thinking, there's no reason to open anything else as long as those attractions are bringing guests through the turnstiles.

There's no reason to open anything new before 2019 and I'm sure they don't want to reveal their plans for SW and take the luster off what's coming before (although I doubt they will have a choice at this point).

The last thing they want is thousands of families waiting on their WDW vacation plans until a SW land is open.

They've gone $500 mil in on Avatar without even having a finished script. Iger has the script and the dailies for SW.

Avatar made next to nothing in merchandise sales whereas SW has been going strong now for almost 40 years.

I had heard the same thing a while back but since then it sounds like they are all-in on the franchise at this point (including the standalone films). I don't think they're waiting any longer to see how this film is reviewed.

The prequels were dogs and they didn't even slow down the SW machine.

maybe I am wrong, but in the one article with Iger late last year, wasn't there something about an announcement being made at Star wars weekends at DHS this year? Wouldn't that be the perfect time to explain what if any changes are coming to DHS if star wars related?
I haven't heard SWW mentioned, though it's widely assumed any announcement would either be at D23 or SW Celebration (also being held in Aneheim this year).

New Star Wars movies are Disney owned, financed, and created. Without Disney, there would be no Star Wars episode 7.

Not true. Lucas was ready to start work on Ep. 7 when Iger came a-calling. Had the Disney sale not happened, you can guarantee there still would have been an Ep. 7.

Why would it open in California first and Florida later? I can (kinda) understand the idea of drawing out any SW development with seeing how the new movie is received and to spread out costs. But once there are concrete plans that are green lit, why would they not build at DHS and DL in a similar timeframe? Even if there is some unique elements, there is surely going to be a lot of overlap between the parks, so doing simultaneous development and builds would spread the development cost between resorts.

What would be the rationale for doing Disneyland first?

Well we can score one for the Cast Members. On my last trip last year, my son asked one of the cast members about the possibility of a Star Wars 5th park expansion. The Cast Member on Star Tours told my son that there will be no 5th park, but that plans are already on the way, for each of the 4 parks to have a huge Star Wars Presence within the next three years. He said even Epcot is going to get something big out of Star Wars.

Perhaps Tatooine will be built next to the new country of Arandelle.

I don't think you should give them a win on this one. I think it's highly unlikely that each of the 4 WDW parks will get a large Star Wars presence.

The funny (or not) thing is... Even if they announced a new Star Wars Land @ WDW today, it will be a galaxy far, far away before it sees the light of day. Even Avatarland at this point, won't open up until 2017. Rome was built - and burned down - quicker.

Wasn't certain where to post this but since this is the most recent thread concerning Star Wars stuff in the parks, here goes.

Interesting observation while perusing other (lesser) WDW fan sites. Tom Corliss over at posted that they are hearing loud rumblings concerning the Gertie the Dinosaur and Echo Lake area of the park. More specifically, they state that they are hearing the area is scheduled for site prep for demo work to start in March of this year. Adding on to this, Corliss also mentioned that Superstar Television Theater and ABC Sound Studio could be the next items to go come Summer 2015.

I am certain that other people have mentioned this in the past but since their site felt the need to highlight it all of a sudden, I figured I would mention here on the number 1 WDW fan site. :angelic:

Okay, I get what you're saying. I want this. I want this really really bad.

Just realize what I'm saying is what I was told by a couple of people from TWDC. And that is what tempers my comments and excitement.

Because thats what people in TWDC told me.

Also Iger said it about a year ago (I think).
