The Mouse is prepping a 3D version of the original 1991 film for theaters in 2010.

The people at Walt Disney Feature Animation will be working with the carefully preserved film files to piece together a new experience that both new and old viewers of the flick we love.

We hear the sound of more money hitting the Disney bank vault.

The Mouse House is ALL ABOUT 3-D these days!

Disney's digital 3-D lineup for 2009 includes "Jonas Brothers 3-D Concert Movie," to be released on February 27; Disney/Pixar's "Up" (May 29); "G-Force," from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films (July 24); the newly re-rendered Disney digital 3-D debut of Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story" (October 2); and "A Christmas Carol," from Robert Zemeckis (November 6), starring Jim Carrey in multiple roles.

In 2010, the studio will roll out a 3-D version of "Toy Story 2"; Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland," starring Johnny Depp; "Toy Story 3," from Disney/Pixar; "Rapunzel"; and, from Touchstone Pictures, "Step Up 3."

Disney really has to do this--with piracy as it is, now, you really need to make the theatre experience into something special to convince people to show up and pay $12/person.

Saw Nightmare before Christmas in Disney Digital 3d the other day... In case you don't know, the process used to dispaly the imagery in 3d is the same as the 3d films in the parks ... So there's no 'red and blue' lenses... that really destroys a movie for me...

Probably going to see bolt in 3d tomorrow at the AMC at PI.. and there are tons more coming in DD3d..

I wish they would adapt the video to home viewing... Hannah Montana in theaters used DD3d, but it was Anaglpyh (red/blue) in the home version.....

Bring RealD home!

Hope this doesn't emasculate me :lookaroun or anything, but Beauty and the Beast is admittedly my favorite Disney movie, so I will absolutely be seeing this in theaters...

Wow, that's great news! I love Beauty and the Beast, seeing it in 3D will be extra special, I can imagine that the whole Be Our Guest number will look amazing!

This is good news to go along with MY preference for IMAX movies. I just found out about Disney releasing 5 movies onto the IMAX screens:

Ya think they can bring in the "pie" scent from Be Our Guest in Philharmagic for the 3-D movie version? That would be the icing on the cake, or pie. :lookaroun :D

WHY do we need step up 3, step up 2 was horrible and the first was bad enough, why do we need a 3rd!!

I cannot speak for the quality of the movies (I have only seen the actual dance clips, not the whole movies) but the answer to your question is quite simple, Step Up has been a profitable franchise. Both movies have had budgets under $25 million and have brought in profits of at least $100 million each. They are not high risk gambles.

(Perhaps I took your question too literally but I wanted to sound like I knew what I was talking about :lookaroun)

That's actually the first thing I thought of. It always seemed to me like that scene was MADE for 3D.

I think it's because it kinda is in 3-D? I'm no animation expert, so sorry if I'm wrong, but wasn't that scene the first time some kind of CGI technology was used?

To anyone who hasn't seen any of Disney's digital 3-D movies, it's worth the extra money. It not like cheap in-your-face tricks, the animation looks layered, and it makes everything look brighter and clearer. It is truly stunning.

The Little Mermaid (1989) included several CGI elements (including the ship in the beginning, the wreked ships in the final battle, the staircase behind Ariel in Eric's castle, and the carriage Eric and Ariel are riding in when they jump over a ravine.)

The first film to have a large amount of sold 3D CGI was Disney's TRON in 1982. 2D and 3D wireframe CGI had been used in the 70's, including Star Wars.
