Fair has nothing to do with the safety of the public. Not being vaccinated should equate to not working with the public.

Fair has nothing to do with it.
But then people who aren't vaccinated are still exposed to the public when they do simple stuff like go to the grocery store. And unless they plan on working from home and never going outside again, they expose themselves to the public all the time. Heck, they could still vacation at WDW and pick it up. But since for some, getting the vaccine could be dangerous, so dangerous that they could die. Unless you want them to go live in a bubble, I don't see how you can prevent them from having contact with the public.

I never said that....I said if you work at Disney then you should be vaccinated. If you can't get vaccinated do not work at Disney.

It's quite simple.

But you could still go to WDW and spend your time there, just like a CM. Are you saying then, that those who cannot get vaccinated should not be allowed to go to WDW?

Sorry, but a medical reason is a valid reason for not vaccinating.

Not if you are working with the public.

You are trying to justify Disney Cast Members not getting vaccinated and there should be NO EXCUSE!

And none of us disagree with that. Unkadug is making a very valid point, public heath wise. If you cannot get vaccinated for medical reasons, including a compromised immune system, then perhaps you should reconsider working at a place where over 360,000 people, including people from foreign countries with little or no public vaccination programs, visit daily. For your own health. Because, as you mentioned, there will be visitors who have not been vaccinated for highly contagious diseases.

But see, you're still around the public everyday. You can't exactly live in a bubble if you don't have a vaccine for valid medical reasons.

Sorry, I'm not going to agree with you on this one.
Nobody said anything about anyone living in a bubble, but Cast Members who are exposed to people from all over the world daily, do not have the right to spread the disease to other guests. The guests them selves are taking a calculated risk just by being around other people. They should not have to worry about contracting the disease from people who are no longer even there.

Personally, I think vaccinations for highly contagious diseases like measles should be mandatory. The ONLY exemption? Medical - for the very valid reasons mentioned. Sorry, no religious exemptions. You don't get to play with my health or the health of my family because of your personal religious beliefs. Don't like it? Go live somewhere else.

Do you know why the March of Dimes exists? Because President Roosevelt wanted to raise money for polio research. And MY generation (I'm a boomer), thanks to that research, is the LAST generation to live in fear of this terrible disease. Do I want to see a return to that fear thanks to some stupid and misguided anti-vaxxers? No, HELL NO.

We are also the last generation to get the smallpox vaccination.
I know first hand how terrible polio was - my friend's mother, who died in 1979, contracted it in 1954 and spent the rest of her life in a hospital bed (at home) with an external chest compressor. But if she had to be hospitalized, she had to go back into the iron lung. When she was hospitalized for the last time, her sons had to go down to the basement to identify it, and then set it up because no one on the staff had ever seen one. And I hope that no one ever has to see one again.

I think individuals with compromised immune systems limit their exposure to the public. Explains why folks are wearing surgical masks when out in public.

They do, as I pointed out. That's called common sense.

But a compromised immune system is not the only reason someone would need a medical exemption

Sorry, you are not going to win this one Missy.

I disagree, but I'm done arguing about it. I don't think either of us is going to convince the other.

Me too. Which is why this whole anti-vaccination movement, albeit small, infuriates me. Because we are the last to know and fear diseases like polio and small pox (I think I can still see the scar on my arm from my vaccination). One of my professors in college had polio as a child. He was very fortunate - it only left him with a pronounced limp. I feel for your friend's family.

A medical exemption is fine in the private sector, but if you cannot get a vaccine then you should not work at Disney....SIMPLE AS THAT.

And yes I'm done arguing with a brick wall myself.

And I agree, which I stated in a previous post. Medical exemptions to mandatory vaccinations for school aged children include compromised immune systems, not just an allergy to ingredients in the vaccine. And tests can be performed to see if the individual would have a problem with the vaccination.

However, I still agree with Unkadug. Given that Disney has employees and visitors from around the globe, including countries that for whatever reason do not have a vaccination system like we do in the U.S., it is imperative for the health of ALL of us that CMs get the vaccination. Like I previously said, Patient Zero has spread measles to 6-7 states. And still counting. I recently read a report on NPR that measles will make its way to the East Coast. And thanks to MY getting measles as a child, I'm safe. But I want others to be safe also. Measles ain't fun, trust me.

Yes, it's a skin test for allergies. I get them before I get any vaccination since I went into anaphylaxis after the menigicocal vaccine (I had MMR as a child, though. That was before I developed severe allergies).

A better solution would be for unvaccinated CMs to work in backstage rolls until the outbreak is over instead of saying that they shouldn't be allowed to work at Disney at all. If you are that concerned about them being exposed to the public.

Here in Florida it is mandatory for children to be vaccinated to attend public school. There are exemptions - medical & religious. And as the parent of a child who attended public school in Florida, just try getting around the requirement without an exemption. If you didn't provide that HRS (now DOH) blue form, the school hounded you. Which it should.
The problem is, our exemption process is a joke. All the parents have to do is sign a form with their county's health department that vaccinations violate their religious tenants and practices. That's it. They don't have to provide details, nor is the DoH representative permitted to ask for proof.

As such, it's very easy for many AV'ers to commit fraud by claiming a false religious objection and exempt their snowflakes. You better believe the AV'ers know how easy Florida makes it for them, and they celebrate it on their websites.
Do antivaxxers vaccinate their puppies ?
While I won't make a sweeping generalization, I've seen many instances of AV'ers claiming to avoid immunizations for their pets. Check out "Things Anti-vaxxers say" and "Anti-vaxx Wall of Shame" (two FB groups I'm very active on) if you want to see examples (or lose faith in humanity).

Do you actually think that Disney is going to take an untrained onstage CM and transfer them to a backstage role that requires training just to accommodate a few CM who feel like that are immune from communicable diseases?

It's much easier to just require all CM have the vaccine as very few, if any, backstage CM have zero contact with the public.

edited to add: you said "until the outbreak is over". Do you know how to prevent another outbreak? Get everyone vaccinated.

Since you've had measles, you know how contagious the virus is. It is airborne, spread by coughing and sneezing. And the initial symptoms are similar to other respiratory illnesses, like a cold or the flu - fever, runny nose, coughing, red eyes, sore throat. According to the CDC, measles is SO contagious that if one person has it, 90% of those around him will get it if not protected. Those are staggering odds of infection.

The only way to protect CMs and impede the spread of the disease is for them to be vaccinated. Why are you so opposed, especially since you've had the disease?

Which is why I am opposed to any exemption except for documented medical reasons. Sorry, YOUR personal religious beliefs don't get to threaten MY health and well being.

How stupid to avoid vaccinating your pet for rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, etc. One bite from an infected raccoon and that pet you love so very much becomes a danger to your family. And you get to explain to Timmy why you had to put Spot down. And he needs a series of shots - or are you also willing to risk your child DYING from rabies? My nephew was bit by a neighbor's dog. Because my brother wasn't sure if the idiot had vaccinated his dog and he didn't want to wait, my nephew got the series of shots - painful AND expensive.

I think she had the vaccination, not the disease. She's too young to have experienced any of the true epidemics.

I had the MMR vaccine, not measles the disease. I have asthma, so if I had the disease, I'd be dead.

I'm opposed to requiring vaccines when there may be a valid medical reason behind not getting one. I agree that everyone who can get vaccines should get one. But I think that the few who cannot get vaccinated because the vaccine is more dangerous to them than the disease should still be allowed to keep their jobs. Reassign them to a place where they will have less contact with the public if you are that worried.
