Disney Springs construction begins

Does anyone know what they are doing with the Planet Hollywood water area? It's all boarded up from the bridge to planet hollywood, but the waterway is still open from the other side of the bridge. I thought they might be draining or blocking the water to prep the land to turn that building into the astronomer building.

The concept art still shows a waterfront area back there with a new building in the spot where Comedy Warehouse used to be, plus new buildings on the south side of the water in what is now the PI parking lot. Not sure if what you're describing is related or not; it's still very early in the conversion process.

He's also the guy that convinced Disney to close Pleasure Island.

I don't think there is any proof that Schussler "convinced" Disney to close Pleasure Island. What is true is that in May, 2008, Keith Bradford and Kevin Lansberry were invited to a big party up in Minneapolis hosted by Schussler and they got to view many of Schussler's concepts:

One month later Disney announced PI was closing.

What don't you like about Disney Quest?
Don't get me wrong, it's okay but when we were there last a great majority of the games weren't working. The area with pinball games had six out of the many operating and so we decided to play skeeball along the other wall but some of the machines had balls missing but people kept playing. There weren't any CMs in the area to fix anything. Astroblasters was down most of the day. If you pay for something like that, there should be a better ratio of working games.

All is proceeding apace. And it is perfect. DTD and Star Wars Episode VII. I will be there. It is my destiny. Plus I like that Earl of Sandwich place.

They seem to have discovered the waterfront and will feature it with "Springs" rather than turning their back on it as was done with PI. Definitely an improvement.

Looks like that area is going to become one end of the new bridge...

Downtown Disney isn't impressive and is quite boring besides the theater, the legos and Disney Quest. Hopefully Disney Springs will bring this area on par with city walk. Then I'd consider venturing that way.
Maybe it's just me and the fact that I've gone to this place ever since the last remnants of the good old Village, but yea I find the current incarnation to be extremely boring and minus the fun factor that California has. I can't quite explain it, but there's definitely a fun factor in California that is not present here.
