Disney Splurge

My SPLURGE is eating cheese danishes EVERY morning:ROFLOL: Half the fun and experience is figuring out what works for your family, that's why it takes SO many trips :D

My thoughts exactly! I didn't see the show but I can't imagine hauling someone you 1- don't know and 2- are paying $100/hr around WDW with you especially when it's so easy to get into a groove that works for your family.

I'd much rather splurge on so many pins we weigh the car down with them, hoodies, and kitchen/home things. Basically lol anything that I can enjoy for more than the duration of my trip. The hoodies are expensive but dang if they're not good quality. They get used at least every weekend. I've got a collection of hoodies in my entry closet. Every weekend our friends come over and we gather in the kitchen. My kitchen is usually the coldest room in the house so everyone helps themself to a hoodie! LOL We call them communal hoodies. I also keep one in my car for cold restaurants.

I thought the show was okay but spent too much time in Costa Rica, although it looked kind of cool. My question is...how do you get a job as a special escort? She looked like she had it made. Riding the rides, eating at Jiko's with them, doing the safari. I can do that! Seriously though, I'd much rather be with my family experiencing Disney our own way.

It takes years of working your way up the ranks. I don't know of anyone that just "started" out as a VIP Escort Cast Member. You basically start at the bottom rung...retail is the kinda the quickest way to get there. Start out as a cashier - then trainer - then probably some small manager part (if lucky) or you move up to Guest Relations (which is in itself hard enough to do) and deal with guests trying to make reservations, complaining (a major/huge portion of the job), fielding questions, etc etc...
From there you then have to be able to prove your "Disney Knowledge" and show that you can actually handle VIP situations within a theme park environment. It might look easy enough - but they have had years of on the job training to make it look that easy! Trust me - there are so many small details that they MUST know - they truly will forget more than we / the average guest / will ever know.

As for the show itself - I was a little let down as well. They could have very easily made this a fantastic show - but anyone willing to just search the WDW website can find most of those shown (maybe not as in detail as you might like-but you know what I mean).
And as for the Disney Adventures segment - I don't know that I would have called or grouped the DA segment into a "splurge". I mean - they are really trying to get the word out there about the whole Disney Advntr trips anyway - and then to call it a splurge - they might have lost a few people on it thinking it was probably WAY out of their price range.

The VIP tour guides are the same people that host the Keys to the Kingdom Tour. Our tour guide Matthew told us how much fun it was to do these VIP tours. The guides have everything paid for them. So they get to eat everywhere the family eats for free. He said it was the only way he could afford to eat at the restaurants. Matthew also said that a lot of the time he could bypass the lines for the VIP's. I know that is not what the TV show said.

Our guide also said that they are the one's that host celebrities. They all have their "lamented lists". So if a celebrity comes in that is on the list, they automatically get chosen to host that celebrity.

I do agree that the special was bad. There is so much more and exciting things to do if you have that much money.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one disappointed by the show. DH and I were talking and we wondered why they only feature the same "splurges" like the race car, fireworks cruise and fishing and resorts (AK and GF) on shows. We would like to see them feature other deluxe resorts like Wilderness Lodge or even YB Club. It seems like there are other splurges to be had. Like parasailing and feasting at 'Ohana everyday!

I thought this was the weakest Disney special I have watched on the Travel Channel. Was I the only person that felt like one big commercial for things beside the parks?

Wasn't too thrilled either. I already deleted it off my DVR. Looking forward to the Disney on a Dime show next Friday though.

This is was one of those shows to let you know there are a lot richer people then us and they think by spending over $100 an hour they enjoy their trip more. I enjoy going down to Disney and just relaxing with my DW, and not having spending lots of money to be happy. We have spent enough in the last 9 years at Disney we could have payed of the house but we like our trips together, so we dont regret the money spent. Its just the rich trying to make you feel bad!:hurl: We spend a day what most those spent an hour!:brick:And we love are time probably more so!:ROFLOL:

First of all, I found this special so boring that I only watched about half of it. I was disappointed since I had it on my DVR, then sat down to watch it with the fam, but it was just not worth the time.

While I watched the Laws, I told my hubby that if I had the kind of money to spend on a trip that they were spending, I wouldn't be going to Disney! That may be sacrelige, but it's the truth for me! But if the guide isn't going to help you get to the front of the line, then what would be the point? I didn't see/hear the guide say anything or really do much more than info you can gleen off of these boards. Maybe they can get in restaurants w/o ADRs, I don't know. It would be nice to have the private transportation, but isn't that also part of the Disney experience? I love to be pampered and the like, but is it really that hard to figure out Disney?

If you can afford it and want it, go for it. But as for me, I can't afford it, and I don't want it!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one disappointed. I am looking forward to next week's Disney on a Dime special, but am not expecting anything I haven't already learned here:lol:

I couldn't believe what I heard Laurie Gelman say. Can't bypass the lines? Since when? I doubt that the Gelman's have ever waited in line. There's plenty of people on these boards who have had to wait for the next vehicle due to a celebrity.

i was disappointed they didnt show a varity of things EVERYBODY can afford. i mean, if u can afford all that, great, but if u cant, there are plenty of things u can do that doesnt cost tons of money. i mean for most people, just going to disney world once is a splurge and a dream come true. I mean, sometimes people forget that not everybody will get to expierence disney. for some, seeing disneyworld on the tv, or going to the disney store, or watching a disney movie, show, special, exc. is it. i mean, i have been blessed with the fact that i have been to disney many times , and will continue to do so. but we must remember its a gift, and that everything associted is a gift. i mean there isnt a law that says every kid has to go to a disney world. so cherish every disney visit because some people will never get to do it

Me too (but different foods.)

I didn't enjoy it as much as last weeks because it isn't stuff we are going to do any time soon (if ever.) We are heading to WDW in 2 weeks and it did not get me excited about going. (Like I need a show to do that anyway.) :p

The guests who pay for the VIP guides aren't brought to the front of the line, unless (as stated before) the CM giving the tour is friendly enough with the CMs working the attractions that they backdoor the group for them. The front of the line treatment is only reserved for people whose presence would become a distraction for other guests. Disney wants the guests to focus on the park and its attractions, not the celebrity who may be visiting. They try keep them out of the spotlight as much as possible.

I thought it was interesting that they showed the men of the one family doing the race car thing then going fishing, while the women went off shopping. Don't know how many Disney kid show episodes I've seen where the message is something along the lines of "It's OK for boys to dance and cook and it's OK for girls to love sports." Kind of counter to their usual message. I know I'm reading more into it than what was there, but it did get my attention.

$100 an hour for a tour duide? I could do it with my eyes closed. I wonder how much of that hundred the CM actually sees.

The Richard Petty segment was good, but long. I wasn't all that impressed, either. The package the man received, is a $1250 package....nice little splurge. The ride alone is only $110 but doesn't look as fun as driving your self. I would think after 10 laps it might get somnewhat boring. The lifetime one he had was 30 laps. Too much, IMO.

The AKL safari seemed cool, though. (Was on Samantha Brown's list, too)

Yeah, the special didn't impress me. I'm sure the next one (Dis on a dime) will be nothing new to us here, either.:) To the average it may be useful, though. We shall see.

My family was also disappointed and fast forwarded through at least half. There were a few parts I enjoyed, seeing the safari and Jiko, since those are two things on my to-do list. Some segments were too long, like the Petty thing, and we've seen that before. Not that these specials ever give the average Disney fanatic like us any new info, but they do on occasion. They are usually nice because you still get to see the park and get your fix. But in this case, I just didn't care to see Costa Rica. Or people fishing. I know some people like to fish (not me, no thanks) but is it really a "splurge"? Makes me wonder how/why they chose these experiences and if Disney's marketing wasn't deciding which things to push.

tell me about it, like top tips from our friends at wdwmagic.com,
they can even ask some of the users to go to disney and exercise the tips

ohhh, pick me!! pick me!!:sohappy:

Wouldn't that be a blast! I bet we would do a much better job of getting people excited about going to Disney too.
