So let's review...
New Disney Resort
no discernible theme, Generic looking architecture

New Universal Resort
Caribbean theme with rock work, waterfalls, beautifully themed feature pools and interesting architecture...

Now who phoned it in?
Both Hotels are awful. Disney and universal are looking more like twins.

Sorry if this is off-topic, but there were some posts a few pages back about the walking/running path. Does anyone know the state of that around the whole resort, at this point? We are staying at CBR this July and I am a daily runner...hoping there is a usable route to run, but am concerned that this construction plus the Skyliner construction might present a problem.

It does look that, at least for now, the trail is cut off and you'd be stuck going up and back. Odds are, they will eventually reconnect it somehow.

Came across this Beaux-Arts-esque resort hotel concept for China and thought, "this is what Riviera would look like if it were greenlit in the early 90s and Disney had actually tried to make a unique, grand, well-suited and not overly-tall Deluxe-priced resort in this theme..."

How Awesome!

But yes...just came back from there last month and saw the construction of these two monstrosities! They really do dominate the area with as much generic and incoherent architecture as an over-sized Hilton Garden Inn. And there's no place to hide from them in the rest of the resort.

Except for the construction and operation of the limited-appeal gondolas (it's cool, but not sure how much impact it's going to have on transportation to the parks), the placement of these DVC properties actually degrades the value of these moderate resorts.

"With a nod to Walt’s love of traveling through Europe, and your love of traveling here to Walt Disney World, we’re so excited about the Voyageurs’ Lounge that will be located next to Le Petit Café. Inside this fun lounge at Disney’s Riviera Resort, you will be able to experience an artful little gathering place where you can relax and share your favorite vacation memories with family and friends. Featuring décor inspired by a collection of book titles that Walt Disney gathered, including Walt’s 1935 European “Grand Tour,” this lounge will showcase some of our unique Disney connections to Europe.

This sounds good. I was a bit concerned that the coffee / wine bar in the lobby was the lounge. This is a proper lounge, which the resort needs IMO. We like hanging out in the lounge of an evening, when not at the parks.

Like the railroad room at BRV, this is another nice nod to Walt too.

I think you've really hit the nail on the head here. Once upon a time, that is exactly the sort of concept art we would have expected for a new Disney Riviera-themed resort.

The comparison to what now counts as a Disney themed resort is kind of depressing...

🤫 Quiet, the Carolwood Pacific room at the villas is quite possibly the most awesome hideaway spot in all of WDW, the fewer people that know about it, the better.
