I'll be honest, I definitely want the cup way more now, it's a cool story, but there's no way I'm paying 300$+ for it. That's insane
Just get the new version. Unless they monkey with the overall design and color it will be essentially the same. Don't give into the collector's hype, there's nothing collectable about this, it just highlights a comment on today's society.

Tell that to the people that love the color purple and were looking forward to getting one of these mugs during a spring trip to WDW.

You are talking to her. Since I was as small as I can recall I adored the colors pink and purple together, and monorails were amazing. My parents took a pic of me standing under the monorail at the entrance to the MK just as both Pink and Purple were passing over. I also collect (and use) Disney mugs. So yes, you are talking to the one person who would be the ultimate collector of this.

I will not bend to the oddities of an over-hyped collectors who are into this simply because they're being told to. It's harmful to society overall to start collecting items simply because, "omg, someone died in that color monorail". And you know what? I'm pretty sure Austin, the monorail driver, loved his job so much that would have gotten a kick out of everyone drinking out of a mug with purple on it, not throwing it on a shelf... providing he was assigned to purple all the time that is. I'm sure he also piloted blue, green, yellow....

Agree... we love well designed & witty Disney mugs (and use them as well). Wife was looking forward to picking the Purple mug as a B-day gift for herself... but definitely not at the secondary market price of $40+.

For kicks I just pulled up ebay, and the prices there are still sitting above $300 for the mug. I say, if she must have that mug version, simple wait it out (years, I mean) I also collect hallmark ornaments, and sold my favorite lighthouse for $300 on ebay back when it was in demand and I was in the poor-house. Now, I can buy it back for about $35.

... or you can get creative with a $2 bottle of purple nail polish ;)

This is just stupid. The purple monorail was also in existence for 40 years and part of the company history. Over sensitive.

Yes, and there's nothing to say Disney could not paint another monorail purple... would probably go with "plum" though ;)

All that has happened here is that people have overreacted because they don't want a reminder of a CMs death, which resulted in that death being, not honored, but commodified as people now pay $300 for a mug because it is a reminder of the tragedy. They should have just kept selling the darn mugs.

Good lord, people are just too sensitive nowadays. Should we honor 9-11 victims by never flying again? Epcot has always had purple in its theming. There was purple on old shopping bags back in the 70s-80's. So the monorail on the mug had a purple stripe on it. They could have left it there as a tribute to the accident, not pulling it because of the relation to a monorail color that no longer exists.

I am sorry the guy died, but it is done.

Don't know if this was brought up, but I've always found it funny that the Epcot monorail is a big deal (and yes, I believe that man was a hero for essentially knowing he had little chance and hoping to save others) but the I M Brave incident isn't.

They renamed the car I M Loco. I mean come on.

What's the I M Brave incident?
