Disney Parks to Ban Straws

Oh, please. How long do the non-fanatic guests hold onto their giant popcorn bucket or drink cup? If you don't think it's about the revenue, you're fooling yourself. This is a way for a business to say, hey, we're green AF, while also cutting costs. This is a total win-win for them. Are they reducing the price of every beverage by a penny? No? Oh.

I'm not positive, but pretty certain they will offer paper straws like they do at DAK which actually cost more than plastic. And no, the rate at which those things are thrown out don't even come close to straws nor do they get caught during the recycling process (and they are recyclable).

People don't throw away (or onto the ground) souvenir popcorn buckets and cups in mass quantity every day. That's kind of the point... as they are, you know, souvenirs. You keep them.
How many straws are thrown on the ground at Disneyland every day (and are not picked up by CM's) that actually end up in the ocean?

None. Like I said, that part is in reference to the cruise line — along with their beach resorts like Aulani, Vero Beach, and Hilton Head. The change in parks is wildlife/recycling related like DAK.

Starbucks has put out some of their new, I assume reusable, straws... wrapped in plastic. Bravo, Starbucks.

Actually Starbucks as been selling those for quite awhile now. Its not new, and really weren't done for the "straw ban". And they are basically a food straw.

I assume they will phase these out eventually too or find another way to package them.

Fail. Just like this whole movement against plastic. They can ban plastic straws all they want but until they put out a product better than those crappy paper straws no one is going to move on. I don’t care what any environmental weenie tells me.

My wife told me about a conversion she overheard at her work the other day regarding the removal of plastic straws. One person started the conversion about how she bought some reusable aluminum straws because we have to keep the plastic straws out of the ocean. Another person asked her how our straws end up in the ocean because they would most likely go to the landfill (we're in Colorado) and she didn't have an answer, but insisted he stopped using plastic straws as well.

People are conflating multiple issues when it comes to straws and only focusing on the ocean part. If anyone would actually take 2 minutes of their day to read the reasoning behind these, they'd see that impact on oceans is just one reason why there is a push to ban plastic straws. Also I love how some people are positioning this as a partisan issue, as if democrats have nothing better to do than ban straws.

I have no problems with wanting to limit our waste and I try to do as much as I can with recycling locally and reusing items. I just thought it was a funny story due to her sole reason why removing straws was due to keeping them out of the oceans (for our location).

People like that aren’t helping their cause. Makes me want to use more plastic straws.

Asia is the manufacturing base for America and the rest of the world. We are exporting our manufacturing to China to make goods, which they export back to the US. The US has better environment laws. If we did our own manufacturing, the products would be higher priced, but the market responds and tries to cut back. So if you’re actually in favor of doing for the environment, ask for higher tariffs.

The future is actually brighter. Scientists are working on an enzyme that will biodegrade plastics much faster.

Has this already happened? Do I need to bring my own straws in October? Will I get kicked out of the parks for using my own straw? :cautious:
