The show "Happy Days" back in the 70s went down hill and crashed right after the episode that "Fonzy" did a dare to jump a Shark with water skis.

Now the term "Jump the Shark" is sometimes used when someone or something makes a drastic mistake in judegement which in turns ruins them.

What "Jumped the Shark" decisions do you think Disney has done in the past present that you feel was really dumb.

I think to this day the one thing that stands out to me was the
"Daredevil Stunt Circus" which was right in front of Epcot in the last 80s.
I thought that was the most God-Aweful tacky thing to do.

To me, the animation studio was waxing their skis when they released Aladdin II.

They were chum with The Country Bears.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think the term "jumping the shark" is used when there are no more original ideas left for a series or franchise, so the creators use a random idea to boost ratings/popularity. It's not an idea born out of stupidity but out of desperation.

So for me Disney "jumped the shark" with Stitch's Great Escape. Stitch's popularity was dropping before the attraction opened and then all of a sudden they throw Stitch into an attraction that was not planned out well. Another potential shark jump could be the rumored mainland China park. I think Disney may over saturate their theme park market if they continue to expand. Instead of improving the parks they currently operate, Disney is going to gamble on a new park.

No more wristbands at evening EMH. Starting Sept 7, resort guests will have to dig out their room key and show it to CMs when requested (entering attractions mostly). There might be a better way than wristbands, but this isn't it.

I agree with everyone's posts - espeicailly wesTcoatY regarding the straight to video sequels. Very un-Walt like.

This thread is way off base.. When something 'Jumps the shark' it means that something is depicted in a movie or television show that is COMPLETELY unrealistic and out of the frame of reality.. This is generally done to stretch from one plot point to another.. It has nothing to do with it being a bad idea.. It's when the ideal is demonstrated with results that are not realistic..

In other words:

"That movie really jumped the shark when the mass murdered stood up after being shot in the head 17 times.."

"That show jumped the shark when they showed John Doe having minor burns after going through a Nuclear Explosion".....

Therefore.... this thread is pointless...

Nope your wrong:

Jumping the shark is a colloquialism used by U.S. TV critics and fans to denote that point in a TV show or movie series' history where the plot veers off into ridiculous story lines or out-of-the-ordinary characterizations, undergoing too many changes to retain the original appeal of the series. Shows that have "jumped the shark" are typically deemed to have passed their peak as after this point critical fans can point to a noticeable decline in the show's overall quality.

I dont think this thread is pointless at all.

Disney "jumped the shark" by getting rid of Alien Encounter and dumbing it down to be more kid friendly. That was one of my favorite attractions until Stitch took over.

I believe Splashtacular would fit this nicely. The fab 5 in Rainbow Brite Technicolor jumpsuits singing about color, followed by an "attack" by a robo-dinosaur. Imagine how well that fit into Future World...

While I don't think this thread is completely pointless it seems the replies are about things Disney has done people don't or haven't liked rather than when the company actually "jumped the shark."

You can't tell me that a daredevil circus from the 1980s no one really remembers (or a set of video sequels or an attraction that, overall, the masses didn't enjoy) is the one point where critical fans can point to noticeable decline in the show's (Disney's) overall quality.

If someone wants to say Epcot jumped the shark when characters were added to attractions in the World Showcase I might buy that, but I think it is impossible to point to one moment a company like Disney jumped the shark as a whole.

Maybe I should have been more specific..... I actually meant to narrow it down to Parks/Resorts not the entire Company.

Sorry my bad.

Incorrect. The episode in which Fonzie "Jumps the Shark" was in the fifth season. The show lasted 11 seasons and was still in the top 30 ratings-wise for 3 of the last four seasons. The main reason for the dip in the ratings was Ron Howard leaving the show in 1980, but it was still on for a few years after he left.

Random Fun Fact: Henry Winkler is the only person in television history to literally "Jump the Shark" twice. The first time was on Happy Days in 1977. The second time was on Arrested Development, running along a pier, a small shark was laying on the pier and he jumped over it. :D

While I don't believe Walt Disney World, or any particular park, has jumped the shark yet, I do believe specific attractions have. However, I'll save my breath regarding those here, given that the discussion seems to be centered more about Fonzie's antics and the precise definition of "jumping the shark".
