News 'Disney Enchantment' coming to Magic Kingdom October 1 2021

I think the whole thing is flawed. Get people to spend thousands of dollars to come find magic, then tell them "you are the Magic".
The song sucks. The narration sounds like a Halloween show.
I did like the pyro, but you're right that it needs more castle pyro.

You could say the same thing about HEA - "You are the key to unlocking your own magic"; or Wishes, where Jimminy Cricket said that the magic lives deep down inside of you. There's room to criticize the show, but that's a bogus complaint unless you don't like MK Fireworks shows in general.

It‘s hip to be negative.

I‘m not a big fan of DE, but I think people are being unfairly critical due to other perceived shortcomings of the 50th. DE is fine for me, I just hope it doesn’t stick around for 15 years. People sending emails thinking it will go away anytime soon are fooling themselves, though.

I actually really like “You are the Magic”. I wish the melody was blended into the soundtrack throughout like more polished shows.

Fair. I had unfair expectations. I just expected for it to be more than just merch. Or for the merch to be just regular Disney prices, not overpriced for Disney. It's hard to have a 50th celebration with no parade. And as a local, I despise genie+.

It's hard to be positive about it right now. I love going to the parks, but my renewal is up this month and I'm struggling with what to do. My platinum pass would be $370 more this year. Vs pre-covid, it's up 40% and lost photopass, fastpass, and the ability to "just go" any day. It's hard to feel the magic with that kind of increase.

I don't mean to bum you guys out. There are still lots of wonderful things about Disney world. Like the African drummers are back in Harambe.

I don't think people are being overly critical of this. Disney made the decision to premiere this on the 50th anniversary of the company's largest endeavor in it's history...and didn't acknowledge it, it's founder, or even Mickey. This one's on them.

I just don’t think it was a requirement that the fireworks have that focus. The celebration should have in some way, though. I would have been happy with a series of significant updates to the actual rides. MK fireworks have had this kind of story for many years. It has become quintessential MK fireworks for me that we use some Disney movies to find some sort of inner strength. The smart Imagineer would have had Jiminy Cricket narrate. Jiminy Cricket narrates my nighttime MK dreams. Doesn’t get much more magical for me.

Afaik (from the dozens of vids I watched) there’s not even a hidden Mickey in DE!!

At least in HEA, there was one in the very beginning in the projections as the castle turns royal red.

It may not have been a requirement, but when you announce you're replacing a beloved show (after only a few years) with something specifically for the 50th anniversary, you're certainly setting expectations that it's going to revolve around that anniversary.

It's basically a self-inflicted wound on Disney's part, in terms of people being disappointed that it doesn't have anything to do with the history of WDW (or even the history of Disney period). That's probably the minority, though -- it seems like people are mainly disappointed that it's not as good as HEA.

I guess RDCT is the only show that did that. I didn’t see that as precedent for every other resort’s celebrations. I agree that a better show was the expectation of most. A much stronger finale, perhaps?

I disagree here. The message in HEA was that you need to look inside yourself, make your own choices, and find your own happily ever after and the show itself more or less played on that idea of the hero's journey. That, to me, has far more weight to it than "you are the magic!", which just seems vapid and pandering in the style of "you're all winners!" One at least tries to be inspirational in terms of asking people to do something, the just tells everyone they're little balls of magic wherever they go.

I get your point that all of these shows are at least a little sappy and that can be part of the appeal. There's something about "you are the magic", though, that just seems particularly eye roll-worthy, at least for me.

Have other resorts debuted new shows that were announced/hyped as part of a celebration, though? They may have -- I honestly have no idea.

I mean, Paris has a new one every 5 years. DL’s 60th show wasn’t about the rides AFAIK. Walt was mentioned in the narration but that’s only appropriate in DL, anyway.

Not sure on the Asian parks.

TDL has a new show, called Celebrate! Tokyo Disneyland, as part of its 35th anniversary. TDS will have Believe Sea of Dreams nighttime spectacular as part of tokyo disneysea 20th anniversary in first quarter of next year.

Unfortunately, the TDL 35th show was a firework show concept that once to be brought to MK for the 50th fireworks before scrapped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

I didn't think it would be entirely about the rides (I didn't think it would feature the rides much at all other than perhaps a few song snippets) but I was expecting a celebration of Disney history overall with songs from the entire catalog, hopefully including several we don't hear often now. Instead it's mostly about Disney movies from the past decade, which just feels strange for an anniversary show.

I also personally don't like re-recording songs from the movies -- I want to hear the actual version I know as part of the show, not one that's been transformed into something else (sometimes essentially in a different genre entirely) -- but that's a separate issue and certainly not unique to Enchantment.

My biggest issue is that the show is far too derivative of HEA, and in most cases, HEA had the better corresponding scene. ”How can we redo HEA without just showing HEA?” I have to imagine they literally storyboarded this out by starting with HEA’s sequence and merely replacing scenes.

Yeah, I was going to mention that too.

The fact that they replaced a show that wasn't very old (and received very high praise) with something that feels like a lesser version basically all around was a weird move.

Completely agree. Really feels like they decided they had to add a new show but didn't really have much time or any new ideas, so they just did a kind of knock-off version of HEA.

Do y’all think there will be a special (recorded) announcement before DE for Mickey’s birthday tonight?

They’ve done similar right before HEA, as shown here:
