i heard a rumor from a disney bus driver that the buses will soon be running on ethanol if there not already anyone know if they are green or are planning on going green with the bus fuel.

I happen to work in the commercial transportation industry and there are several options besides ethanol for alternative fuels and hybrid busses that could reduce their costs in the long run. Our annual convention has had day long seminars about it for the past two years.

On the topic of going green, I'm surprised Disney hasn't gone into this further - with the amount of flat roofed buildings, they could install masses of solar panelling, and perhaps solar panels trees in the car parks (which also have the benefit of providing shade over pathway and part of the car). Seems the scope for reducing their energy bill could be massive, but then of course, so would the initial outlay.

It could also provide the world's largest hidden Mickey!

I am all for going green but ethanol is a joke...

All it does is raise food prices even higher, how does anyone expect there to be enough farmland to produce ethanol and food for an already overcrowded planet. I support trying to go green but ethanol is a more expensive shade of brown.

Darn, I just broke the soapbox... we now go back to your regularly scheduled thread.

you know what i never thought of the positives that would come out of solar power at disney. i'm truly surprised they haven't used this One. for free energy and Two. to show earth conscienceness and forward thinking. especially with epcot being a park with us thinking of the future. i think the solar panels could be hid as well and i like the solar tree idea...neato!

Not to mention that the current bus engines wouldn't run on ethanol without replacement...Good alternate fuels don't currently exist That is as simple as it can be put. Hybrid technology is the best current solution, but I'm not certain on how useful hybrids engines work on a heavy bus - I haven't a clue on the numbers associated with the battery weight or an electric motor with enough torque.

PS. For the person that talked about the Solar Panels, that is a current route that could be taken. Solar panels unfortunately aren't great energy harnessing tools compared to their ic engine/steamturbine counterparts; however, the sun's energy is clean and free. Maintenance and implementation cost certainly are the largest drawbacks.

I'm curious as to what other options you mention... What other options are there? I'm just curious to hear what the industry is pushing.

What about natural gas? I noticed that many of the D.C. buses use it. I do not know much about it though.

The problem with solar is that it is still quite inefficient. The currently designed panels only capture a fraction of the potential energy. If they improved the technology, they might be a good idea.
Like the "hole on the ozone layer" this FAD will go away none too soon.
Im just plain tired of all the "green" talk.
The hole is still there. Ethanol or hybrid may not be the way to go. You need something that is unlimited. No matter what your stance is on the environment, renewable energy is a logical choice. If given a choice between a limited and an unlimited supply, that is a no-brainer.

That has to be the funniest thing I have read all night. If you scroll down to the bottom of this page you will see several other threads where this topic has been discussed at length over the last year.

Do I think Disney will go green? Yes. Anytime soon? Not so much. I think there is still so much new technology out there that it is going to be a while before Disney goes spending huge amounts of money converting their fleet of hundreds of buses to something that may or may not work out for the long haul.

Oh, and I am all about the flux capacitor. It is clearly the superior option here.

Please dont flame me for this, but last Sept. I was at the world and I asked a bus driver this same question( about "green" buses) and he told me that Disney already bought a few hybred buses to try out. He also told me that they were like 2 feet taller than the ones they have now and couldn't go under the water overpass by the Contemporary resort. But you know he could have been pulling my leg.

When I lived in Delhi, India, all of the commercial vehicles (buses, auto-rickshaws, trucks, etc.) were powered by compressed natural gas as that had been required by law several years before. I remember reading in the news at the time that there were tons of strikes and transport shutdowns as a result, but, today, the entire city is breathing (comparatively) clean air. As polluted as Delhi was when I was there, I shudder to think about what the air was like before the changeover to CNG. According to the then-girlfriend (who had lived in Delhi all her life) of one of the people from my group, the pollution used to be unbearable.

Yes, there were some hybrid buses rolling around property a few months back, though these were loaned, not purchased. They had Wachovia logos all over the buses, as I think Wachovia sponsored the project. When I first saw one of them in the MK bus loop, I thought I had gone crazy, but they were featured in one of the Cast Member newsletters (I think it was Eyes & Ears.) a few days later. Apparently, the Guest and CM comments were pretty positive, but those buses were just one of the options that were being considered for the future.
