Disney Bus Fatally Hits Pedestrian

There really is no way to automate a replacement for common sense. Somtimes common sense does slip. I am guilty of having my mind elsewhere at times - it happens to everyone, but the vast majority of the time I try to stay focused on what is going on around me. Who knows the mindset of the person who was killed. Maybe he was Mr. Safety, but this was the one time he was not thinking clearly. All it take is one mistake. Maybe he was walking to his car and thinking, do I have the reservation number for dinner with me just in case? Let me check in my pocket. A moments distraction and the wrong time is all that is required for an accident to happen.

Great post writing. Sums up what I have been thinking below...

With all the trips us fans take it could of equally of happened to any of us, anywhere, at anytime. All the more tragic that WDW is likely ruined for them. Count blessings, and live life save, but live life.

Thoughts and prayers to family.

I have not seen so much insensitivity and ignorance in one thread in a long time.
If you can't discuss this topic like adults, keeping in mind that a man died violently - in front of his family - just stay away. Thank you.

Mass. tourist steps in front of Disney bus, dies
December 27, 2010
ORLANDO, Fla.—A tourist from Massachusetts was killed when he walked in front of a bus at a Walt Disney World resort.

Authorities say 69-year-old Robert Krueger of Yarmouth Port, Mass., stepped in front of a Disney bus traveling through the parking lot at the Port Orleans resort Sunday afternoon. Krueger died at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the bus driver was 57-year-old Rosemary Kincaid. There were passengers on the bus, but no one aboard was injured.

An investigation is continuing, but authorities said Krueger was not in the crosswalk and the bus had the right of way.

In April, a St. Petersburg boy was hit and killed by a bus while riding his bike at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort campground.

Thanks Mom. I know that right now I am feeling very sad for the family of this man. I hope that they are going to be OK. This family needs a great deal of support right now and I hope that their faith, family and friends can get them through this very difficult time.

Let us All think about the family of this man right now and not whose to blame etc. The family will have a very difficult life now without this man in it.

Let us think of them.

It just serves as a reminder that no matter if you have the right of way or not if your anywhere near where motor vehicles are you need to pay attention to whats going on around you, whether your in the resort parking lot going to get something out of your car or running to grab some food or at the bus stop for the Magic Kingdom.

It amazes me the amount of times I see people just wandering around the world oblivious to whats going on around them, its a shame this poor fellow lost his life and my condolences to the family, its just amazing that this kind of thing doesn't happen more often with the amount of people Disney Transport moves on an everyday basis and its a credit to them of the safe system that they run and the people behind it, while it may have it flaws they do a very good job of being safe and doing with a smile and I hope that the bus driver can cope with what happened and she gets the help that she needs.

The LURKER RETURNS!

This story happens too often and though Disney truly is not at fault I care to see how long it takes before they ratify the system blocking guests off from access to bus areas and installing a system of air locks or gates that stop people from walking into traffic. Terrible news my condolences to the family and my hopes that Disney understands how mindless we can all get when we are overstimulated by over the top multimedia displays giant sculptures sets smells sights and the magic of Disney. Sadly they have to install safty for things that seem like common knowledge because you can always be surprised by the ignorance of individules particularly on vacation looking at everything, I have been guilty of similar actions and have been closer than I care to admit in meeting an early granite marker. I truly am sorry for the family and the man. I think with this being the...third? incident within a year that some lock or gate system is applied.

regards

I agree. There should be air-lock gates along the sides of every single street in Walt Disney World.

According to witnesses, Robert Krueger, 69, of Yarmouth Port, Mass., on Cape Cod, was walking alone when he stepped into the path of a Disney bus traveling through the parking lot of the resort about 5:50 p.m., said Sgt. Kim Montes, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman.

...

The crash is under investigation, but Montes said charges were unlikely. Krueger was not in a crosswalk, and the bus had the right-of-way, the highway patrol said.

Well of course he wasn't in a crosswalk, if this happened in the parking lot. The fact that the incident took place in an area where buses are generally not supposed to go adds a new layer to the 'whose fault' argument. Although, if this is just bad wording and 'parking lot' really means 'bus stop at the front of the parking lot where buses are expected and supposed to go', then that makes things different.

Why should it all be up to Disney? You can't just check your brain at the door because you're on vacation at Walt Disney World. Yes, they should always review any measures that will make things as safe as they possibly can for their guests and cast members. But guests need to take some responsibility for themselves and their children. When Disney is at fault, I think they should do what they can for the family of the injured. But nothing irks me more when someone wants to sue Disney, or any other company, because they or a family member was hurt or killed due to their irresponsibility.

Also, what epidemic is there with accidents with Disney transportation. If my memory is correct, the last accident reported was back at the beginning of April. If I'm right, that's just over eight months between accidents. For a transportation system the size of Disney World's and the amount of miles those buses must put in each day, that's a pretty amazing to me, especially considering how many accidents I see reported just during the morning rush hour on my local news each day.

As for this particular accident, we obviously don't know all the details and don't think it's fair to Disney, the deceased or his family for us to throw blame at any party at this point.

In closing, I wish his family nothing but the best at what must be a horrible situation.

Amen - I feel horrible for the family of this man. It was obviously a tragic 'accident' in the sense that neither party meant the outcome (even though one of them may have been able to prevent it).

But tragedies like this happen every day in multiple locations around the world so this is again a situation with heightened awareness because it happened in a place where the public has a harder time accepting tragedy. (Maybe Disney can make some changes such as gates, but we've all seen the frustrated mob-like mentality associated with getting on the buses after park closing)

that sounds like overkill. An event like this should just remind people that they need to be sure to not check their common sense at the door when the check in at Walt Disney World. Dave made a good statement about all it takes is one moment of distraction to cause an accident. We should all just remember to be extra aware of what is going on around us in high traffic areas. It's like the new animation at the exit of HM...people have been successfully offloading the Haunted Mansion for almost 40 years now. Why all the sudden has it become an issue today where we need an icon to show us the correct side we need to offload on? Do we really need signs, gates, rails to keep people from walking infront of a bus today as well? If so, what is happening to society? I really don't think there is a need for air lock gates and formal bus queues.

Though I might see a need for WEDway Peoplemover systems to be installed resort wide.

My condolences to the family of course. I am very sorry that they have to go through this.

I think they were meaning the bus was on the roads of the parking lots, not the actual aisles of the lot. The bus wouldn't have had a turning radius to navigate the aisles.

I would have to agree with this. None of the three bus types used at WDW would be able to make such a tight turn. Indeed, it is amazing that they manage some of the turns that they have to make on a few of the backstage routes around property. I know one other poster was told by a bus driver that many of them cut through parking lots, even though they are not supposed to, but the new Magic in Motion system would likely put a quick kibosh on that, since it can track when a bus is off-route. It would also make operating the system more complex for the driver, since there is the potential to, while off-route, miss some of the triggers that cause things to happen automatically, like playing the spiels or changing the destination signs.

There are some places where buses always go through parking lots, like how all WDW buses exit Animal Kingdom via Cast Parking, but this is a planned part of the route and they pretty much only have to go in a straight line through there.

I was on a ALK bus once and the driver told me (yeah, I know the credibility of that) that sometimes they cut through the parking lots at various resorts. It is 'frowned upon' (his words) but at times it is done. He told me this as he was going from Jambo House to Kidani via the parking lot.

How would a bus go from Jambo to Kidani in the parking lot? You would have to cross from Jambo to the service lot (which is possible) to the Kidani lot. I attempted to drive from Kidani to Jambo in my car and there was no outlet from the Kidani lot into the service lot.

I'm not sure how. It was late at night, and he was tr__________g through the lots.

I said, how come all busses don't do this. Why do they go back out onto the road and loop around. He said 'we are not supposed to, it's frowned upon'

I was not really paying attention to excatly how he was going.

Not sure this would have helped. The reporting isn't terribly specific, but the linked News 13 report says it happened in the parking lot, seemingly not at a stop. Unless they had a running bullhorn loop on every bus as it drove anywhere saying "Look out! I'm a bus, am bigger than you and don't stop on a dime!"

So WDW transportation will sound like the tram cars?
