"Disney Build It!" Kits Released

That's a bit disappointing, and I can't see something that basic selling. But I hop this will lead to more Lego Sets (NOT Legos, It's a company name...) Of greater and more detailed.

Imagine building a detailed Cinderella Castle, complete with castle suite and royal table!! or full attraction like Space Mountain... :D

For any fans of both Legos and Disney, the new "Disney Build It!" kits were just released in some WDW merchandise locations. They're Disney attraction-themed construction block sets very similar to Legos (they probably work with Legos as well). Currently, the following are available:

  • Cinderella Castle
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • Jungle Cruise
  • Splash Mountain
  • Big Thunder Mountain
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Space Mountain
Cinderella Castle, Splash Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain represent the main attraction buildings, while the rest are show scenes from the attractions.

The finished kits are relatively small--6-8" high and roughly the same bottom dimensions as a DVD case. Most of them look pretty cool, though I'm not a huge fan of the Space Mountain one. Each comes with a Lego-ized Disney character in an apporpriate costume. The price for each set is $24.95, though the sets are included in the current 35% off all toys promotion.

Haha - that's funny. When I saw the subject of the thread I had a hunch, and then when I scrolled down to the pic of the Splash Mountain set, it was confirmed. These *exact* sets where on sale when I was in Japan in 2003. Same selection too. Didn't anyone think it was odd that Pooh was one of the choices? The only thing different is the packaging.

Hooray for rehashed merchandise! Does this mean that in a few years, our gift shops will sell nothing but cookies in collector tins? (Anyone that's been to Japan will totally get that.)

I too was ready for more. My daughters love the current pirate themed Lego sets. However, anyone who has purchased Lego's lately knows that even with real Lego's you don't get much for $24.95. I can see my youngest using some of her spending money on these...but hope to add real sets in the future.

When I saw this I was hoping for some detailed and large sets! For $24.95 though, I dont think it is all that bad compared to other sets that Lego and Mega Blocks offer. Of course 20 years ago we could get an entire police station or space shuttle kit for the same price but just like everything else the price has basically doubled since then.

God bless the "Ignore" button.
No, definately not worth the money. Legos (and clones of Legos) are something that, once a kid starts them, they quickly move up as far as difficulty goes, so this is pretty schlocky.
However, I'm guessing that this is a precursor to the REAL Lego sets that will come out later, just to make sure there's a market for them before they invest more money into the operation.

I agree. It's hard to make any firm comparisons without seeing piece counts but LEGOs have definitely gone up in price in the last few years. Just 3-4 years ago they would run about $.08 to $.09 per piece on average. A $20 LEGO set might have 220 pieces or so. Now that same set is $30-35.

This one set is definitely under-whelming. Still would like to see the others.

As for LEGO making theme park sets, I'd love to see it but am not holding my breath. Right now the Disney/LEGO agreement covers only Cars, Toy Story and Prince of Persia. It would be incorrect to assume that they have the right or intent to produce sets all up and down the Disney spectrum.

I saw them today at World of Disney...and they're underwhelming at best, sorry, I didn't have a camera with me.

These are for ages 5+ and probably not exciting for people much older than that, sadly.

Wow, sad but true. Like a previous poster mentioned, these Lego-like sets have been out at Tokyo Disneyland for several years. WDW Merchandise must be really out of ideas nowadays.

If anyone wants to see the rest in the series, here's some pics I found:

have to agree with the mcdonalds statement!

Cindy's castle doesn't look too bad but Space Mountain is just awful! I'm guessing this is just sort of a test run to see how they sell (sounds like they got the leftovers from Japan) and if all goes well they'll go ahead with bigger Lego sets. At least that's what I hope... :lookaroun

After looking at those Japan ones, Space Mountain is definitely different than the one I saw today, and there was no Pooh one on display.

So from the description, I take it that space mountain is an interior piece? Like the lift hill, launch tube, or something?
Yeah, kinda. It's two rocket cars "floating" on translucent poles next to a space shuttle-y looking thing. It doesn't really look like anything from the actual attraction.
