Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

Sinners ended up with $48 million for the weekend and $64 million as of yesterday

Looks to be a genuine word-of-mouth hit that's overperforming (both in terms of box office and critical/audience reaction) for an original R-rated horror movie.
It's the best movie of the year so far, so the success is deserved. Anyone that wants to support good ORIGINAL content at the theaters should go see it!

I’m sure there will be a decent amount of repeat business before it loses IMAX screens next weekend. What’s crazy is it’s losing Dolby theaters this weekend for Accountant 2.

My mom watched it in theaters as a 19/20 year old and wouldn't even sit on the toilet afterwards.
Well we've had Snakes On A Plane, so coming out with a new sci-fi/horror called Sharks In The Loo isn't too far-fetched.

But nothing can be as terrifying as Piranhas On An Escalator. That's something that could happen to any one of us at any moment. 😨

I think I'd rather watch Pretty Woman.
Pretty woman is overrated….I find that film is more morally bankrupt then Anora…. As it presents itself as a romantic comedy…. I can see the comparisons as Anora is probably the more realistic as they type of person who would rent a working girl…. But Anora is so much deeper than just that…. It is surprisingly funny in the 2nd half as well

I can think of a movie that should be added to this list. A few years ago I saw a trailer for a movie where a family got stuck in their house which was flooding because of a hurricane and alligators were coming in with the water and they had to avoid being eaten. Or at least that’s how I remember the trailer.

Crawl -- that trailer had great rhythm to it, enjoyed it every time it came on. The movie was nothing great, but a pretty fun watch from what I remember.

From the reviews I've read, it is a grittier, modern-day version of Pretty Woman. At least in Pretty Woman, the "hero" was a good guy.
The comparison didn’t even occur to me while I was watching it. Sure, it’s there in the most basic sense, but they’re entirely different sorts of films. The hero in this case (though it’s not that kind of story) is Anora herself.

It wasn't meant to be an insult. You’re a different person from me. You have your code of standards. I have mine.
Most people would use and understand the phrase “code of standards” with some sort of ethical implication.

In any case, I agree it’s not for everyone—no film is. But assessing its artistic merits on the basis of its suitability for children seems entirely wrongheaded to me, since children are most certainly not part of its target audience. Acknowledged masterpieces like Pulp Mission and The Exorcist would also fail to pass muster if judged by such a standard.

Agreed, Anora left me feeling emotionally devastated. It has a completely different aim than Pretty Woman as a film.

It's also not really a movie with "heroes."

Yawn.

Anyway, I may finally go see Snow White tomorrow. Trying to squeeze it in before it totally vanishes from theaters (which is coming real soon now -- it's down to 2 theaters out of 6 here, and only 3 screenings between those 2) and before our upcoming trip to WDW in early May.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of numbers the Revenge of the Sith re-release does. By screenings, it's actually the biggest opening in my market this weekend.

I'm going to see Revenge of the Sith tomorrow night with the kids. I think we will bring lightsabers. The theater is full.
Granted I can watch it anytime my home theater but this should be fun with a bigger theater crowd.

Once was plenty for me, but I can see the attraction of bringing kids to see it.

I had to remind myself of what the original was. I remember the trailer, but I never saw it. We'll be taking in The Shrouds tonight -- you never know what you're going to get with Cronenberg.

It's a good time. We see old movie releases all the time in the theater. I remember seeing Empire Strikes Back at a theater during COVID. We had a private screening. It was really fun.
One of the best things theaters have been doing for a while now.

Saw Alien when it came back around last year (think it was last year anyway) and it was great to get to finally see it in a theater.

Deadline has started rolling out the tale of the tape for 2024's Top 10 blockbusters that @BrianLo has oft referenced.

So far:
10 - Sonic 3 - $123.6m
9 - Mufasa - $175.0m
8 - Kung Fu Panda 4 - $178.0m
7 - Dune: Part Two - $184.3m
6 - It Ends With Us - $207.0m
5 - Wicked - $230.0m
4 - Despicable Me 4 - $370.0m
3 - Deadpool & Wolverine - $400.0m
2 - Moana 2 - $415.0m
1 - Inside Out 2 - $650.0m

We should obviously expect to see Moana 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Inside Out 2 on this list by the time all is said and done.
