We really counting Poor Things as Disney? Ok.

They own Fox Searchlight and there have been endless pages of discussion about it, so yes, we’re counting it. Disney is too:

Ok. If those are the rules. Just wondering how much involvement the distributor, searchlight, had in actual production. Any at all?

Hot take: All of Us Strangers is a richer, more satisfying film than Poor Things. Crazy that it didn’t get a single acting/writing nom.

Crazy how the combined number of nominations for All of Us Strangers, The Color Purple, The Iron Claw, Saltburn and May/December is...2. Wonka doesn't even get something like costume design.

For some of those, I think there's a point in the awards season where it's too late to release something.

Once again, a half dozen movies basically make up the entire nomination slate.

All of Us Strangers and The Iron Claw didn’t seem to mount much of an Oscar campaign, not sure why. Both were extremely worthy of awards consideration. Same for Saltburn and The Color Purple. They may have thought that Saltburn was just too sick. It is, but it’s still brilliant. They may have thought that they already had The Color Purple party in the 80’s. They did, but this new musical production was also brilliant. Haven’t seen May December yet. Wonka should have gotten a couple of noms.

Just reading reactions online, is this the most widely criticized Oscar nomination slate in a while?

Looks like people are mad for both making the wrong guesses and feeling there are a lot of genuine snubs.

American Fiction did pretty well with a late release.

The internet corners I haunt were most irritated by Ferrera’s nomination. Smaller quibbles elsewhere but felt kinda like a safe slate of nominees overall to me.

Agree with your point about the industry not being helped by nominating a handful of movies for 80% of the top awards.

Not to minimize her role, but it's truly a head scratcher that she was nominated, but not the movie's star or director.
She got the big "why it's hard to be a woman" speech. So while I also would choose other people to nominate, giving Ferrera the nomination fits most squarely within what the Academy tends to value and look for.

I was really surprised about The Color Purple…Besides the Barbie snubs that was my next biggest surprise…I agree about All Of us Strangers and especially Iron claw with that release date which seemed primed for awards season. I would not be surprised if Saltburn had to do it all over again they would of mount more of a campaign…it has really taken off on streaming. I saw May/December it was good…but where I could of seen it getting awards consideration is the acting categories

I forget - did you see American Fiction yet?
