Disney (and others) at the Box Office - Current State of Affairs

At both the domestic and foreign box office, Bolt made more money than PatF.

PatF however has no doubt sold more merch and DVDs/Blu-rays than the former since.

Bolt beat Princess & The Frog at the box office, especially at the overseas box office.

These stats are adjusted for inflation from 15 years ago to make it more relevant to our 2023 eyes...

As for DVD sales, the win goes to Princess & The Frog, with an extra $24 Million in DVD sales compared to Bolt, mostly due to a re-release on BluRay for Princess & The Frog later in the 2010's that Bolt never got...

Ha! The point of comparing it to the completely forgotten, culturally irrelevant “Bolt” that came out the same year was to show how poorly it performed at the box office at the time.

It wasn’t to establish “Bolt” as the milestone to clear to establish popularity and relevance as that film is nonexistent culturally.

The fact we’re even debating whether it is more relevant than a completely forgotten film is the entire point.

PATF was, and will always be, a second tier (maybe third) animated title regardless of how much Disney tries to rewrite history and force it upon the public.

Oh, and PATF’s enormous “merch sales” are one of the great internet myths of all time.
Do you have a source showing what the merch sales are?

Eh, only time will tell. Many classic Disney animated films were written off as critical and commercial flops only to be reassessed by subsequent generations.

It still shocks me that for much of the 20th Century, Sleeping Beauty was viewed as a "poor man's Snow White" when to me it's the greatest artistic accomplishment of Walt Disney's career. Sleeping Beauty eventually achieved the status a "classic," but that didn't happen for a good 30-40 years after it initially came out. The same goes for Fantasia, which went from being a major flop to selling a then-record breaking 14 million VHS tapes in 1990.

Those are Ebay statistics from 10 years ago. I wonder if there's anything more recent that would cover more than Ebay.
I would venture a guess and say that overall, Moana (if she's actually a princess) may have surpassed her. The movie was the most streamed movie for how long?

The post I was referenced dealt with merchandise sales. That would be influenced by factors other than just the movie's popularity. For example, Cinderella dresses would sell better than a dress worn by a princess for only 10 minutes after spending almost the entire movie as a frog. Not criticizing the movie, just saying that other factors go into merchandise sales.

I'll start with PatF is my favorite WDAS film post lion king. And it's a shame it didn't do better. That said, for now, and at least for the near future, people still don't seem to be connecting with it.

I always got the impression Disney wanted PatF to be bigger (and perhaps better?) than it was and this was reflected by how much they pushed it in the parks.

That said, I remember someone bringing up the example of Brave as a similar case in that the movie didn't exactly set the world on fire but for some reason keeps popping up at the parks far more than things like Zootopia that made far more money. Part of Disney's desire to keep PatF viable is almost certainly that they want a more diverse line-up of princesses, but it does seem the princess films in general take on a life of their own post-release that is not entirely obvious just looking at the box office.

I can see Princess and the Frog having more of a following today. I like Bolt, but it lacks the former's killer soundtrack, which gets better every time I hear it. Having good music really helps the film's staying power.

I think the music is the best part of the Tiana "franchise", if there even is one. That Tiana riverboat show they did in 2009 at Disneyland (and I think WDW?) was one of the most fun, most toe-tapping, most charming pieces of entertainment I've ever seen at a Disney park.

I would agree with that, just based on gut instinct and what you see kids wearing out in public.

So nothing recent

You could get a pretty good reading on the current popularity of each Disney Princess by searching "Disney insert princess name" on Target.com, as Target is the official Disney retailer but also must stock and offer products that the free market actually wants/buys.

That search at Target.com gets you these results today;

Disney Snow White = 207 Products
Disney Belle = 166 Products
Disney Frozen Elsa = 161 Products
Disney Cinderella = 139 Products
Disney Moana = 122 Products
Disney Frozen Anna = 66 Products
Disney Aurora = 62 Products
Disney Tiana = 57 Products
Disney Mulan = 45 Products

Hey, at least Tiana beat Mulan. 🥳

or the usual Halloween barometer…wonder if we will see Barbie and Oppenheimer costumes this year

Barbie. By a landslide. I already bought my Cowboy Ken costume for this Halloween, but am now seriously considering upgrading to a real Stetson (I've always wanted one) because the cheap hat the costume came with is so godawful bad looking.

Oppenheimer? Not so much. 🤣

Yes… I was joking… sort of a call back to the no Avatar Halloween costumes awhile back…as I believe all 3 skews more to the adult demos…though perhaps one person could dress as Barbie and one Oppenheimer…then say they are the new celebrity power couple Barbenheimer
