Disney America

Well universal seems to be digging a hole for themselves. they are now in debt for about 30 million i think. Thats double what disney owes. If disney wanted to build more they could. I would like to see everything up and running smoothly with improvements to the buildings and new rides to fill in space. I would also like to see all the castmembers happy and get their hours back.

With regards to why the park was built, there were landowners near the land that did not want Disney to come for fear of increase in traffic, among other things. People were also afraid that visitors to the park would then go to the Manassas Battlefield Park nearby and trounce all over the park, messing up the land. (another ridiculous reason; as a matter of fact, they were complaining last year, i believe, that there were not enough people visiting the Battlefield).

As soon as Disney announced their plans, a nearby road (VA 234) started to see a great increase in the number of businesses that came (because of Disney). Restaurants and other stores were built in anticipation. When Disney backed out, some stores left, but most stayed and have been doing pretty well because of our proximity to Washington DC (mainly because our stuff is cheaper out here than in close to the city).

I remember that Disney sold the land to the Boy Scouts, but I don't know what happened to it since then. I think some apartments and houses and stuff were going to be built there.

Anyways, that's some info from someone 10-15 minutes from the location.

The reason they wanted the park to be near historical sites was because they wanted to have day trips to these locations, not so it could be built on top of a historical site. Why not build it in central North Carolina. Its warmer, and there is plenty of historical sites nearby.

Disney's America

I remember when the plans were announced, and as a resident of Richmond, Virginia i was extremely excited. This park would only be about an hour and a half away. But, alas it was not to be, however there area guilty parties to blame. All of the NIMBYs (not in my back yard) came out of the woodwork. The Seirra Club, The Audobon Society and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation were all opposed. All three claimed that development surrounding the park would run amok and rainfall run-off would spoil the Chesapeake Bay. Their claims as we know are unfounded and Prince William County voted against Disney. Once this occured a canceled my involvement with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. I was extremely disappointed in their knee-jerk reaction. Maybe in the future a park can be resurected in this area.

FutureCEO, Thanks for the link, it brought back some memories. As a resident of Virginia, i do remember the controversy of the park. It's funny to see that area now, 10 years later. It is running amok with suburban sprawl. You couldn't pay me to live in northern Virginia. Way too many people, way too much traffic and it's extremely expensive. The park would have given Prince William county and the city of Manassas a real good reason to come up with a master plan and to revise their land use and zoning regulations. It's too bad, it really would have been an economic boost for the area and the state. Plus i wouldn't have to drive 11 hours to Orlando, 6 hours to Hilton Head isn't too bad.

But there is always hope for the future. :D

Disney's America would ahve been perfect in Disneyland. If it were built in WDW, well, you all went over the problems of a 5th park right now. Plus, I think there enough America/patriotic things all over WDW, in Liberty Square, Frontierland, Main Street, and of course, the American Adventure.

At Disneyland, they could use the American Adventure, or a similar show as a centerpiece, and it would be a very educational park. Yes, we all go to parks to have fun, but it would be nice to see Diney try something different for a change. Walt always wanted areas like Frontierland and Main Street USA to be very historically accurate, so as to educate as well as entertain.

But ambey thats why he chose to recreate those eras of America, instead of the ones from War Time? Still, it would be interesting to see the Imagineers take on a serious recreation of a War Period (excluding Sunset Boulevard's 1930's WW2 theming).

if you want to see a Disney America idea I am posting one at the imagineering section. I am about half wat through, feel free and take a look. The name of the thread is Disneyland Va. It starts off with my Magic Kingdom park but then later in the thread you will start to see my vision of a Disney America. I am for this park, why because I am a history buff, 2nd I love disney and you put those two things together and you might have my favorite disney park. I am very mad this project got canceled because I am a virginian and I wouldn't have to drive 16 hours down to orlando. I hope they reconsider this park:D

You think that's bad, I live in Minnesota. NOTHING is close to Minnesota! We're like right smack dab in the middle of the country, equally distanced from WDW AND Disneyland!

I think Massachussetes(sp) would be extreamly difficult due to the fact they take ther historical areas very seriously and restrict developement in historical districts. Take remodeling a house in certain areas you have to go to committe after commette to get you paint colors and facades approved. they would have to go to someplace where there is no historical signafagance(sp) to build it in new england or most places on the eastern seaboard

They would not build in Massachusetts, because it would have to be closed three quarters of the year due to inclement weather.

Also, Disney was not going to build smackdab next door. They just want a place within a few miles of these historic landmarks so they could have people plan day trips with them. These day trips were going to be run and owned by Disney.

I find it funny now that VA. has a water park and a hotel on the land where they were going to build Disney's America..

 yeah they have to deal with our cultures, but they don't have to buy them. Last time I checked a large part of the Florida WDW audience came from other countries. Other countries that really could care less. Would you go to Disneys' France if they opened one there. (yeah Iknow nobody goes to Disneyland Paris anyway). WDW is still a slave to the almighty dollar even if it has just been recently converted from pesos or yen. As much as I would like to see WDW America in Orlando. Which by the way is the only place I could see them building anything at this time. I don't think it will ever happen. They would be alienating too large a percentage of their audience.
