Disney After Hours Event

It works pretty well for Universal. Only their deluxe resort guests and those willing to pay a huge upcharge get to skip lines.

What lines?

express pass is not needed unless you go on peak season...so it's more of an optional thing to me. With Disney fast pass is so vital to a well planned vacation. It's not a luxury but a necessity at least IMO.

Given some of the things I have seen, I don't think it can be done. I've seen adult males come close to physical battery when a character refused to stop for their kid to take a pic/get an autograph. No, we shouldn't design the world due to crazy outliers - but it's just an example of how passionate and how much these characters are now seen as part of the "Disney Park experience". But I just can't see it working now that everyone has a camera attached to their hand rather permanently (particularly the audience that runs after characters).

While we complain about the meet and greets, to be honest - the system they have now is pretty close to the best that can be done without completely changing the paradigm. It creates kind of a "shadow park" where the people with insatiable kiddos can stand in hours long lines, and the rest of us largely get out of having to deal with it.
Good point. You could never get away with it with Mickey Mouse or a really popular character. Maybe just street entertainers not in costume. They tried it with more generic entertainment like the clowns in FLE but that didn't last too long.

Maybe we should ALL work to change our culture.....I mean really.

I'd be mad too! But I don't see it as irrelevant, and definitely not completely irrelevant.
My only point is if a person pays $150 for something that's supposed to be exclusive to people willing to shell out that kind of cash and then they find out 70% of the people got in for free they have every right to be mad as hell. It's completely irrelevant to the person in this situation that DVC members paid a lot of money for their membership. Its nothing against DVC owners (I am one of them).

I hope not.....I'm not a fan of when guests get subdivided based on who and more importantly how wealthy you are. Some basic things like lodging are exspected but changing how certain guests may or may not be able to do or take advantage of bugs me. 5,000 dollar vacation or no fun for you?
I'm not a fan either, especially when its access to the Park...

With ya bro....if sold to me as exclusive, and it turned out not to be.....umm....yeah, I'd be fired up

And then there's the few DVC members who shelled out for the experience because they like to do advance planning, only to find out they could have gotten in for free had they waited. I'm a quiet type, but in this case I'd be at the ticket booth demanding a refund, and if denied, in the DVC office for resolution (not because they had any say, but because they know how to get the attention of those who can fix the situation.) Someone, somewhere would have a new one ripped, and hopefully not any of the cast members who are innocent bystanders.

Sarcasm alert......Yeah, but they're the 1%ers and deserve to get scamed anyway...they don't earn the money they make ;)

Are Space, Splash, Thunder all open? I would assume they are, but I would also like some of the smaller rides like people mover and COP.

Yes and no. I think the characters appearing in set spots and at set times is something that really did come about based on guest feedback. The popularity of the meet and greets really has made it less possible to have the spontaneous character encounters. The autographs and photo pass camera people have added to this problem. Having young kids I can say it's nice to know there are certain places you can go that will definitely have characters.

All that being said, I think they could do both. There could be some characters that have spontaneous appearances and just interact with the crowd without stopping for pictures or autographs. It wouldn't take long to hug or hive five a kid and move on but if they have to stop and sign autographs and pose for multiple pictures it would be total chaos as the crowd grows. They could actually use the data gathered from the magic bands to know when an area is extra crowded or needs extra attention and send in a few spontaneous characters. It would especially work during pre-show or pre-fireworks time when people are just waiting around. Of course that would cost more money too so it probably won't happen.

But at an event like this with such few people, you wouldn't have the crowd issue. Especially if they spread it out enough. Or even if they charge more and limit it to less people (if you think 1000 is too many). Just curious if people would actually pay any amount to experience exactly the personal touch of what you see in the ads.

Agreed, it could work since there are so few people. The only issue is that with so few people they need to keep costs low to make a profit (or in Disney terms a huge profit). With the Christmas and Halloween parties they at least offer unique entertainment. This appears to just be a few extra hours in the park with a number of attractions open with little or no lines.

They've been testing this on and off for a little while now. They had Peter Pan maybe a year ago now wandering and have done a few tests with Flynn Rider.

That review looks good, this isn't something I'd ever go to as I live in the UK and we buy two week tickets.. But if I was only buying a one day one park ticket this seems like better value than a day ticket seeing as you can enter at 7pm anyway..
That review was from a group that was able to attend for free and gets other freebies like this from Disney for good PR

The weird thing about this even is that we're all discussing what it's worth to get exclusive ride time on old attractions.

Think about that for a moment. We've each ridden these attractions dozens or hundreds of times. There's nothing new. There is no attraction that is so awesome that it's nearly impossible to get on. It's not hard to get a FP+ for one of these attractions to avoid the line.

There's no other entertainment like with MNSSHP or MVMCP. You're really paying to ride re-runs.

You could very well have this same conversation about seeing Star Wars: A New Hope in a theater again for $100/head and they included free soda and popcorn. You've seen it before. You know popcorn is dirt cheap as is soda. Still, some would consider it. The conversation would be the same.

It's kind of weirdly interesting to me how it's like that.

With other exclusive ride time events, it's typically a new coaster, often the tallest/longest/most inversions or whatever and a park will offer exclusive ride time to ACE or, perhaps, season pass holders. In this case the idea is to get the word out on the new coaster and give a little perk to pass holders. It's new, but they're not charging $100 for the event.

With MNSSHP or MVMCP, I actually enjoy the events. If I weren't a AP, I'd just do Universal during the day and the party at night. A lot of it, for me, is decorations and the parade. I'm not much of a candy person but I'll take a cookie or two from them during MVMCP. I normally don't hop on the rides during these events unless it's something like the Jingle Cruise where it's been made special for the holiday.

I think its deeper than riding old attractions for some peeps. I imagine the peeps that would value being to drop into their next Disney conversation " we were there when the park was EMPTY", hoping to get called out for BS, and then have the photos to prove it? a photo, anywhere in the park, with no one else anywhere in said photo? The review I just read, indicated the Main Street Bus would carry you up and down Main Street all night...great YouTube opportunity! I have been trying forever to get that "perfect" photo of me in the Space Mountain Blue Strobe Tunnel...maybe ride it umpteen times in a row and finally accomplish the photo?

Didn't mean to ramble, but there has to be a crowd that has some warped psycho-value, other than just riding rides they have ridden in the past.

One other note... Thursday May 19th (the last scheduled event), is preceded by Wednesday May 18th, on which MK has EME til 1:00!

It is pretty cool to be there with few other people. I had an 8am breakfast at Crystal Palace one time and they let us in around 7:45am. We got some great pictures on Main Street and there was nobody between us and the castle. It's cool to see the park that empty. We couldn't ride any rides until rope drop, but it didn't cost me $150 a head either.

Heard that! An even better way to get photos and it would be photos in the daylight!!

Edit** We did early/pre-park opening ressies at CRT back in M & Ms younger days and loved the emptiness of Main Street.

Edit Edit*** Oops...I just placed a "value" on $300 bucks worth of cute little waffles:rolleyes:
