Rumor Disney 100: Great Moments with Uncle Walt to Replace Mr. Lincoln

As part of its 100th anniversary marketing-palooza, the Walt Disney Company used archival video and artificial intelligence tools to create a lifelike hologram of its founder — a full-size digital avatar that speaks in Walt’s voice and appears as part of interactive exhibitions of Disney artwork, props and costumes that will tour the globe until at least 2028.

“I get goose bumps every time I see it,” said Becky Cline, director of the Disney Archives.

There are benefits, with the consent of the individual, of this tech.

Even this is disturbing. We can not rely on our history be told to us by computer generated speeches. This pseudo humanity is soulless. It would be more beneficial to read a book written by a Holocaust survivor than hear the words of an artificial intelligence. If this is designed to prevent antisemitism and inform future generations about the Holocaust, I can think of no better way to build distrust in a narrative than have an inhuman voice tell the story.

It’s just voice recognition software searching for relevant snippets from a recorded database. While these setups do 3D recording, hologram tech isn’t ready. They’re just using pepper’s ghost.

It’s just a more interactive way of accessing hours and hours of testimonials.

The Walt Disney company continues to straddle the line of 1. Deitifying Walt and 2. Forgetting the values, storytelling, and business practices that got Walt to the level he is.

They insist on worshipping the man while ignoring how he made Disneyland so great.
At this point this doesn't appear to be going into DL at all, but rather that museum roadshow for the 100th. But who knows it may in the future end up in one of the Parks. Although thinking about it how cool would the Walk in Walt's Footstep tour be if it was actually lead by a Walt hologram.

Also I would say that since his death in 1966 the company has leaned heavily into deifying his "Uncle Walt" persona, so its really nothing new.

They’re using AI to put words in his mouth. I think that’s probably the most offensive thing one could come up with. AA or not.

It sounds like they are using ai to redo the film of him. You gotta imagine they will stick to lines he’s been known for. But here they can create a single consistent experience

Why are they spending money on this. Please just fix the boulder on Indy, thanks.

The Parks division, let alone an Anaheim cost center, isn't spending any money on this. A few WDI programmers may have cooked something up, to sell to museums, but it didn't reduce the budget for anything at the Parks.

It actually begs the question... why is WDI spending money and energy on this if it's not going to the parks? Why don't they try and sell PeopleMovers to airports again instead? (A business channel that floundered and ultimately failed).

But your point is valid at a higher elevation of looking at it. Why is the Walt Disney Company spending money on this?
