Disney’s Mufasa - the lion king

Yes I’m aware there have been other 2D style hand drawn animated movies recently done such as the movie you mentioned. I’m pretty sure Disney is also aware the movie exists as well. Still doesn’t mean they currently have enough animators that are currently trained in hand drawn 2D animation to be able to produce a new feature film anytime soon.
Bob Iger and Jennifer Lee are a bunch of hand drawn animation haters!😤😢

Posted this elsewhere, but its a shame that they somehow got a real director (Barry Jenkins) on this movie and trapped him in the Disney mines. Hope his career survives this trashfire in the making.

Um, given that parts of Once Upon a Studio in 2023 were hand drawn 2D animation I don't think either actually "hates" that animation style.

WDAS's 2D department is hanging on by a thread at this point. Given Pixar's recent shorts output and reports that there are going to be hand drawn characters in inside out 2, I'm half expecting a 2D film from Pixar before WDAS does one again. If one does come out, I will be happy to eat crow.

Anyway, when I saw trailer, I’m not impressed. Although I do love Lin Minuel Miranda from In the Heights, Hamilton, Moana, and Encanto. And he’s developing a new Broadway musical called The Warriors. The songs you guys mention called Scuttlebutt is the worst song ever!

I understand the mixed opinions on the 2019 The Lion King… and I get the arguments as to why some might not care for it… It is not even my favorite of the Disney live actions

However I am incredibly excited for Mufasa… The Lion King is not just my favorite Disney film, but one of my all time favorite movies… and now I get an expansion on that film… plus Oscar caliber director Barry Jenkins is directing… count me in

It's no secret here that I very much am against the live action remakes. The lionking is also one of my top movies, not just animated. If they had done a Mufasa story instead of remake of the original, I think there would be a lot less scepticism on the project. I know I would have been A LOT more open minded to it. But because of how bad the remake was, I have zero faith in this. It's the same problem with most all of the remakes. They could have chose to tell new stories in these universes. Instead they went the lazy route. Jenkins might be a great director but I loved Favreau as a well. I can only really go by the collective quality of the live action remakes, and it really isn't very good. That's why it better be great. If it doesn't get that initial hype, people might just wait for D+.

They took some Oscar winning directors for some of their MCU movies, like Chloé Zhao, that doesn't mean these directors have creative freedom. I hope Barry Jenkins' career can survive this movie.

That is exactly why I am interested in this… I was not high on The Lion King remake myself… as it was just a retelling of the original movie which did it better, but this is a new story expanding on the original… my favorite of the Disney live actions is Cruella… and that was a film that expanded via a prequel as well… plus the soundtrack was a banger

Chloe was a hired hand… but I read somewhere that Barry Jenkins came to Disney with an idea for a Lion King prequel… and Disney liked the idea… it could be garbage, but until I see it… I remain hopeful

That's totally fair. I haven't heard it was Jenkins original story. Hopefully Disney is hands off and lets a good director do what they do. The live action remake/spin-offs just don't have a great track record in quality for me. So it's really hard to get excited for this. I will say the spin-offs have been better than the remakes because at least it's something new. A Mufasa story has potential as long as it's a quality story first and they aren't just banking on, look at all the cool things we can do with cgi!

After watching the trailer for Mufasa, the cg isn't that good. It would have been more interesting if they chose a different art style for the animals instead of photo realistic. Everything looks off.

I totally agree. Photo realistic animals don't really translate well to emotions. No matter how good they think they look, they always fall into that uncanny zone.

Animals don't give the same emotional queues as humans do so getting them to emote like humans comes off weird looking. I think it would have been better to use live animals like they did in the old Wonderful World of Disney nature shows to tell a story. Those stories seemed to come off emotionally a lot better than uncanny CG animals.
