I think it's unfair that I have to pay extra to stay at a hotel with a monorail station.
The big difference is that you staying at a monorail hotel isn't hurting the experience of anyone else. Other people don't have to wait longer for the monorail because you are at that hotel. Nobody feels like they're having a worse trip just because you paid more than them.
On the other hand, Universal and pretty much every other theme park give off this "uuck feeling" by letting people who paid more cut in front of regular visitors. It's annoying when you already spend $100 and then have to watch express pass people board before you becuase you didn't fork over an extra $+/-100. And what about a young child who's tired of waiting and sees people going before them from the shorter line? What happens when he asks if you guys can go in that line? How do you explain that? "Ummm carl, that's because they paid a little bit more than us." Or you can lie, I guess, if you can think of one that's even half-believable.
Honestly, the best FP+ surprise for me (and probably best surprise in the last 10 years in general) was that Disney didn't do an upcharge thing like this. I though for sure that they'd sacrifice customer experince for the quick, extra dollars, but no, it looks like smarter minds prevailed here. I like the fact that, sure, hotel guests get to choose first, but everyone is given the opportunity to skip the line an equal number of times. And no lies have to be told. In the end, fastpass+ pretty much saves you no time at all, but 99% of guests don't realize that and/or don't care.
So fastpass+ gives off no negative vibe, and if anything it's actually a morale-booster, while the express pass (for those that don't buy it) is the opposite.
