I think with Epcot the mistake was putting in too many thrill rides in terms of the total percentage of attractions.
A blend of dark rides, thrill rides, simulators and shows works better than too much of one thing. For me MK has got the blend about right, as has AK.
DHS is too many shows and not enough dark rides, and I think this is what needs addressing. There are the few decent thrill rides but the day can't be filled with the shows and the short thrill rides that you have to wait hours to go on and are over in minutes. The park would benefit from a few mid length, high capacity dark rides that are popular with all guests. It's no wonder TSM is so popular, even the capacity wouldn't be an issue if there were other rides which had the same level of appeal.
The issue is the lack of other similar attractions that have a 10 - 20 minute length and get through the crowds of people. A good omnimover would help this park. Something like Haunted Mansion that is attractive for re-rides but isn't over in a minute or so.
