Funny this has come up ....

I just downloaded SOTS a few days ago off of MouseBits and it really is a superb copy for a download.

Maybe give downloading it a shot. I haven't tried to yet, but I believe that its fairly simple to put on a disc.

Song of the South has never been legally available on DVD.

If you buy one you are getting a disc that a pirate has put together in their garage from an old VHS copy, or if you are lucky a laserdisc.

Then why do most of the DVD copies I have seen on Ebay have a rather authentic looking sticker that says something to the effect of "Disneyland Paris Exclusive" and the same sticker also says The Disney Store? The cover art, disc art and inserts for the DVD being sold on www.mysongofthesouth.com look identical to the ones on Ebay, minus the sticker.

Can ANYONE verify if Disney actually released an official copy of Song Of The South overseas for Disneyland Paris?

When it comes to movies and music, I am a firm believer in buying legit, when it's available legit. People deserve to be compensated for the work they dom and no matter how rich certain filmmakers or actors or studio execs might be, if they own the original, I'm not keen on ripping them off. But when certain things aren't legit, I'll look for them elsewhere, because I know I'll "double dip" and buy an official one when it comes out, partly for the superior A/V quality or potential extras, partly because, as I said, people deserve to be compensated for their work.

Having said all that, I'm a big fan of "nerd fests"-those sci-fi/fantasy conventions that specialize in autographs of B-movie celebs, comics, toys...and DVDs. DVDs of legit releases, and DVDs of stuff that has never been available on DVD. Sometimes it's stuff so rare, with such small following, it might not ever be released officially, like old TV shows you and 12 other people know and would want (like Tales of the Gold Monkey). Other times, it's stuff mired in legal rights hell (like Howard Stern's very first late-night show, which was produced and aired locally on WWOR Channel 9, or movies that were released by an indie company that got bought by a larger indie which was bought by a larger indie that went bankrupt and nobody knows who actually owns the rights to it anymore). And, there's Song of the South. At this point, anyone selling DVDs at these conventions sells Song of the South. Personally, I think the conventions are a lot of fun, a nice little nostalgia trip. I'd recommend going to one anyway, just once, to see what they're all about. And while there, you're bound to find a copy of SotS. The vendors have DVD players there, so you will be able to test the disc before you buy, insure you're happy with it before you buy it. Just make sure you promise Walt's ghost that it gets shredded the nansecond you get your hands on a bonafide official release.

Here's the next convention I'll be going to in April. I am not affiliated with the organization in anyway, I just have fun there, and some of you in the area might have fun there.

On this very site there is an advertisement for www.mysongofthesouth.com and they are selling DVD copies of Song of the South for $19.98. My wife has never seen Song Of the South and I am determined to get a DVD copy somehow. I know (or at least I THINK I know) that a Song Of The South DVD was sold at Disneyland Paris several years back and the DVDs that www.mysongofthesouth.com are selling look just like them. I have currently been bidding on a copy at Ebay but I know I won't win the bid because most of them end up going for $80.00-$100.00 and as desperate as I am I won't(and can't)spend that much for it. My question is this: Has anyone on WDWMagic purchased Song Of the South from this company and if so how was the quality? Even if these aren't legitimate copies I am still tempted to buy a copy just so I can add Song Of The South to my library. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated!

It was never released on vhs in the USA, and never ever released on a dvd anywhere in the world. Laser disk in Japan and China, VHS in pal format in other countries. USA never. Any DVD would be a bootleg.

It's because they are good at making forgeries.

Not that I'm ENCOURAGING you to go get it, but it's available (well mostly--not fully there yet on my news server) on alt.binaries.multimedia.disney
Person uploading it put the name backwards as the subject title.

Too bad I don't know how to insert a pic here, but a picture of the cover that was also posted LOOKS like a legit cover and says "made in England"... hmmm... I guess that means it probably PAL...

Well, anyway, would be interesting to know if this DVD is a real DIS release.

IMBD sure doesn't seem to have any info about a DVD release...

No DVD was ever released. Any seen anywhere are bootlegs.
Disney only released VHS is pal format countries. They also released a laser disk in Hong Kong and Japan. Thats it.
Disney stopped anything about Song of the South in the late 80's in the USA. That was way before a dvd existed. In European countries the pal vhs tape was stopped in 2001/2
Laser disk's were stopped in the 90's.
the more talk about this on Steve's forum will get Disney's attention and they will stop this. Please do everyone a favor and drop it.
Disney has said in the past they will not release it, they also just recently said no again with the new people in charge.

I just got my copy today in the mail. I just got home from work and found it in my mailbox. On the outside wrapper, it had a sticker, which looked pretty official (yes I know looks can be deceiving), and said "Made exclusively for The Disney Store, DisneyLand Paris. On the bottom of the sticker, it says "Walt Disney Classics Song of the South" then "English Version Region Code US Canada". Underneath that, it says "CDN $44.00, US $37.00. And it has a barcode/proof of purchase in the middle of the sticker.

I put the DVD in, and the quality looks good. I fast forwarded through alot, since I don't intend to watch it tonight. But I just wanted to fast forward through some of it and make sure the quality is good, and it looked fine.

Is it a bootleg? Well, I guess it is if everyone is for sure that it has NEVER been released on DVD. But if it is, they seem to have done a pretty good job of making it look legit. I guess they could have taken that sticker off the VHS copies and stuck it to their pirated DVD release. And the cover, although looking somewhat legit, also looks like someone with the proper talent could have scanned the cover of the VHS version and printed it out to fit in a DVD case. The print on the back looks a little fuzzy, which would support that theory. And, whereas pretty much all DVD releases of any movie have a chapter listing where you can jump right to any "chapter", this one does not. So I guess I have to conclude that everyone is right when they say this is a bootleg copy. Regardless, I have a copy now, so that's all that matters.

With Photoshop on a computer you can manipulate and print any image, including stickers.

However you can't print off holograms - that's why the DVD you have did not include the hologram Disney put on all genuine releases.

Ya, and I also forgot to mention another thing; this DVD had a bonus cartoon called "Coal Black and the Sebben Dwarves". Even if Disney DID get grow some backbone and get brave enough to defy the crybaby sissies of the politically correct and release this movie, there ain't now way, no how that they would include that cartoon with it.

Snow Black was a Warner's cartoon. Big give away that this is a pirate

Checking on IMDB it comes up with the following details that show it too is on a "Never to be released" list, though I think with more good reason than SOTS:

* One of the "Censored 11" banned from T.V. syndication by United Artists in 1968 (then the owners of the Looney Tunes film library) for alleged racism. Ted Turner continued the ban when he was hired and stated that these films will not be re-issued and will not be put on Home Video. These cartoons will probably never air on television again, and only non-Warner Bros. licensed public domain video tapes will probably ever have these cartoons on them.

* Among the items around the Evil Queen in her throne room are a bottle of "Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin" (the name belongs to a machine that removes seeds from raw cotton), and a box of candy labeled "Chattanooga Chew-Chews" (taken from "Chattanooga Choo-Choo", the title of a song popular for that time). The crest over her head on the throne includes two dice and a pair of crossed straight-razors.

* When "Muder, Inc." comes, there is a listing of their fees as follows: "We Rub Out Anybody $1, Midgets 1/2 price, Japs Free"

* This was the only short that the animators at Warner Brothers did any research for. They went to African-American nightclubs to learn the slang.

Whilst googling to check my facts I found it on You Tube.

oh...good to know that DLRP is having region code 1 .. although all other european countries have region code 2  ... so technically DLRP is US soil :ROFLOL:

and a pirate has it's money ... btw .. when this guy gets busted some day .. he might still have the adress list where he sold the dvd's to :lookaroun

Coal Black is a really interesting cartoon which is presently banned from distribution of any kind. I know it was on Youtube a while back though I'm not sure if it still is there. My dad actually has it on Super 8 film which he bought probably back in the 80's. Another cartoon, very similar and what I thought was so funny as a child is the "Isle of Pingo Pongo". it's not so great now, but it's another banned for life cartoon. I think it may have been a Warners product as well, but it's been such a long time that I don't remember.

Well, this guy distributed it and I now have it. And I watched it the other night. Still haven't watched the main feature, though. I haven't decided if I will do that before our trip, or if I will wait until the road trip to WDW to watch it in the van.
