News DeSantis moves to bring state safety oversight of the Walt Disney World Monorail including suspending the service for inspections

Andrew C

You know what's funny?
The investigators and prosecutors working below the DA are not hired to do politics, much like how employees for FDOT are not hired to do politics.
You know very well the DA pushed this on hard...in order to meet a campaign promise...he is leading the investigation. Again, entirely separate from an inspector going in and inspecting theme park rides...

You could make an argument that the better comparison is the connection between the gov and the new board (the gov appointed board is doing the work of the gov)....but then connecting that down to the inspectors is getting close to conspiracy theory stuff...and is low IMO

Typical would mean a lot of screaming but nothing actually getting done.

Two laws have been passed already and a new board of mostly incapable political appointees has been appointed. That's not "schlock".
Fair. But it's still "inflict maximum pain to make our point". I've witnessed it happen here for over 20 years - Whenever someone wants more money, a school district, for example, it's "give us more money or else there will be budget cuts and the kids will suffer".

So you're saying an elected official leaned on lower level employees to get a desired result? Fascinating. Sounds like you truly are attacking their character and honesty...harsh..

To whom does FDOT report? If they’re told to go inspect the monorail during the day are they going to decline? It’s not a conspiracy when the person in charge gave a speech about it last week.

Well, with a requirement that they also be a licensed attorney.

Most politicians don't have such specific requirements.

A member of the Florida bar for the preceding 5 years.

If you want to generally think those state inspectors who work with theme parks are morally compromised, that is on you I guess....have at it.

The monorails are inspected daily
The monorails are inspected by Disney who puts enormous pressure on it's staff to keep the monorails running and open at all times for the cheapest cost possible. The incidents recorded on the monorail in recent years include, doors opening while the monorail is in operation operation, track misalignments that have resulted in slow downs, doors falling off at the station, and the one death of an operator due to collision were all a result of mismanaged safety protocol and a lack of maintenance. The monorail trains and track were due for replacement or heavy overhauls since 2008. These major repairs were translated into minor cosmetic refreshes to the current 1989 mark VI model trains and patched rail repair jobs that result in lower operational speeds. The California state government had to step in to get Disneyland to conduct major track repair work for their monorail system. Inspectors need to be independent of their shareholders to ensure safe and reliable operation of mass transit systems. Just look at the structural changes made after the incident of the 737 max. In that incident Boeing was put in charge of their inspections and procedures which resulted in 2 air disasters.

The Florida Department of Transportation is an executive agency, therefore its secretary is appointed by and reports to the governor.

Are you sure?, a number of elected are lawyers in their former life.

A lawyer can run for any office they qualify for, but to run for DA you need to be an attorney.

Former Presidents Trump, Bush Jr, Bush Sr, Reagan, Carter, LBJ, JFK, Eisenhower, Truman, Hoover, Harding, Teddy Roosevelt, Garfield, Grant, Johnson, Taylor, Harrison, Jackson, and Washington were NOT attorneys. And that's not going into congresscritters, senators, governors, mayors, etc who are not attorneys.

State attorneys are not "most politicians". A majority of political positions in the country require age, citizenship, residency, and little else. Don't know what this post is for.

Wrong. They are an elected official and run in a partisan race.

why wouldn't the Skyliner fall under "fixed-guideway transportation systems “located within an independent special district created by local act which have boundaries within two contiguous counties.”???

It may be a grey area, here is Florida's legal definition of a "fixed-guideway transportation system".

"Florida law further defines a “fixed guideway transportation system” as a public transit system for the transporting of people by a conveyance, or a series of interconnected conveyances, which conveyance or series of conveyances is specifically designed for travel on a stationary rail or other guideway, whether located on, above, or under the ground."

If they have to run for office, they're a politician.

I googled current Congress officials. 43% are lawyers in their former life.

I didn't really claim otherwise, just that they have an additional requirement. School boards don't universally require their members to have education experience, for example.

Well, since all of Disney's transportation systems are private, then this doesn't apply to them.
