Deck Preference?

Having never been on a cruise ship before I have a question.

Is there a "set" preference for which deck most people prefer their cabin to be on? In other words for example is a higher deck considered "better" than a lower deck location in general?

What is the major differences between the lower deck and higher decks in general?

Thanks!

A higher deck is considered better in general.

We are usually on deck 2 on the Magic and Wonder and have always enjoyed it though.

As a general rule, the only ones I avoid are deck 1 on the Magic and Wonder, and deck 5 on the Dream and soon the Fantasy.

Deck 1 on the Magic and Wonder is a little hard to navigate and the windows are smaller.

Deck 5 on the Dream and Fantasy is right above the clubs in many instances. Sometimes that causes noise issues.

Thanks. We are on deck 1 of the Magic on our cruise. Do you think it is worth upgrading to deck 2? I have always heard that most people do not spend much time in their cabin on board. I bet we will be happy in either but I was just curious. :)

Well that is true! We don't spend much time in our room! I always upgrade to deck 2 because of the porthole. I greatly prefer the large porthole to the two small ones. The fact that you can really only use one elevator, set of stairs, to get to your room on deck 1 drives me a little crazy, but it wouldn't keep me from staying there.

If you are talking about an inside room on deck 1, then I wouldn't worry about upgrading. If you are talking about an oceanview room, than I do think it's worth a little to upgrade.:)

It is a double porthole room. There is only one elevator and set of stairs to the 1st deck? I did not know that, that is kinda of concerning. I guess I will look into moving up a deck :)

There are three elevators and three sets of stairs, but only one of them will get you to the staterooms.

Oops, I lied, the forward elevator will get you there too! It's the aft elevator that won't take you to staterooms. There's no public hallway from there back to the staterooms.

Hopefully that makes sense!

For informational purposes I also would avoid any deck directly below any restaurants as well. Like on the Fantasy in 2013 we were sure to book a stateroom on Deck 9 w/the aft oversized balcony vs. Deck 10 aft oversized balcony because the Deck 10 rooms are directly below Cabanas.

When looking at staterooms look at what's around you on the sides, above, and below.

Very helpful indeed! :)

We are in room 1032 currently so I will see what else is available possibly. Too close to the exercise room, not on vacation :ROFLOL:

Thanks again!

Just got back from seven days on the Magic and had a cabin on deck five the first five days. Due to maintenance had to move up to deck eight for the last two days. Found that on deck eight we got nosie from people moving chairs on deck nine. I think I would book deck six next time.

Wife and I were on the magic 2 weeks ago. Our original stateroom was on deck 7 midship port side. We upgraded to deck 8 midship starboard side. We had issues with the toilet not flushing all 7 days of our trip. Wondering if the toilet would flush or not flush each time put a damper on an otherwise good trip.

We also did not realize that the verrandas on the starboard side can be used for smoking. Quite a few people in staterooms around us were smokers which reduced our enjoyment of our patio.

Noise from chairs and kids running on deck 9 was a bit bothersome, but not too bad.

One Advantage to being on deck 8 was only one flight of stairs to deck 9 and the pool. No waiting on elevators :)

General rule for us when cruising on the magic is deck six or seven midship. We will now include port side tonavoid he smokers. We've had cabins in the front and aft, you can really feel the boat rocking when plying the waves, so we avoid cabins near the front and back.

Have a great cruise!

Actually you can smoke on the verandahs on both sides of the ship. Unfortunately choosing one side won't help.

Did not know that. Always thought people could only smoke on the starboard side. Oh well :) Funny, we would step out on our Verandah, relax a little bit, then without fail we would hear the doors opening up to the Verandah next to ours with the smokers coming out. That would be our cue to head right back in :( If we did not close our verandah door in time, our stateroom would quickly fill with smoke!

Have nothing against smokers, just seemed to be timed just perfectly to destroy our patio time :)

My wife has motion sickness, so whenever we cruise, we try to specify rooms midship. The patches help her immensely, however we've noticed fore and aft rooms on the Magic move up and down quite a bit more than midship when the waves are large. We've cruised on the larger RC boats (Oasis and Freedom) and not felt the ships movement as much as we do on the Magic.

We love the Magic though for its great service and food :)

We were on deck 10 on the Dream and the next time I will book on deck 9. Deck 11 is the resturant and pool deck and when they were moving the chairs around on the pool deck it was VERY loud in our cabin. Deck 9 you are pretty much sandwiched between 2 decks of cabins and I would think it would be less noise!

This is one of the reasons we're itching to get forward or aft. We want the movement! :hammer: For us it's like being in a rocking chair. Very relaxing.

I have heard that if seasickness is a concern to get as close to the middle of the ship as you can. That's middle as in front-to-back and up-and-down. What you said meshes with that.

I just checked my reservation on the Magic and we're in room #2618 - is that good?

Hmm. Well yes and no. I like that are of deck 2, it's very close to the elevators and very convenient. Unfortunately that is the exact cabin our friend had so many problems with. I wasn't in it and didn't experience it, but she said it sounded like there was a galley right above her with carts banging around.

I have read some other reviews of that stateroom that said the noise was infrequent and not bad at all. We were two rooms down and didn't hear a thing.

So! If you can change easily, maybe you should. If you can't however, don't worry. Bring a noisemaker to sleep with and I think you'll be fine.
