Debbie does Mardi Gras @ WDW

This being close to my 30th trip; it was the first for 6 of those in my group. They had no idea what to expect; their only theme park experience was a Six Flags type.
Monday: drive day. We left at 2:30AM and arrived Pop Century at 2:30PM. With 12 of us, we made a couple of extra stops than my husband and I usually would. But, we made a pact not to stress, as everyone was so excited and relaxed that we were finally on vacation. It was the first time in 5 years for my husband, and boys. It was the first time for my friend Mary's husband and kids. It was the first time for Mary's sister, Lisa, and you could say her fiance too; since he hadn't been in 20 years. Lisa's daughter had been one day before so she hadn't seen that much. We had three rooms at Pop Century @ $49.00 annual passholder's rate (mine). Check-in was a breeze; there were only two parties ahead of me. But just as 3PM came; the line started to back up. Great timing on my part! We got the 70's building, which was easier to park in the 90's lot. With an eight foot bed on our truck; it was packed. We couldn't have fit one more thing if we wanted to. Lisa and Mary, with their families, rented a van, and with eight people in the van; good thing we had a big truck to haul everything. After we unpacked, we changed and headed to Rainforest Cafe'. Wait times weren't bad, and we got two tables next to one another. Everyone enjoyed the restaurant and the food except for my husband. He ate two bites of his stuffed fish and that was it. It just wasn't his 'cup of tea', as he is used to LA. cooking. After dinner, the boys went back to check out the pool and us girls went to the Premium Outlet on 535, then Wal-Mart. The Character Warehouse there didn't have anything to offer that I saw last time. The beer at Wal-Mart is expensive! Three cases comes to $60.00!
Tuesday: Mardi Gras Day
We headed to Magic Kingdom, with our Mardi Gras jester headbands and beads. We had a great time wishing everyone a Happy Mardi Gras and giving out beads! If I ever go on Mardi Gras Day again; I'd like to dress in costume and just stand on Main Street handing out Mardi Gras stuff; it was that much fun. Wait times were no more than 5 minutes on all the major attractions in Adventureland, and Frontierland. We had the major attractions on that side of the park done by 11:30am. By that time though, we had to FastPass Peter Pan as noone was willing to wait. Cool. So we went to the lockers and got our sandwiches and drinks and ate (I made 10lbs of chicken salad for the trip). We got a spot for the 3pm parade to watch Lisa's son march with his school. We hightailed it to Tomarrowland, skipping the actual parade. I skipped Space Mountain for fear of not seeing a sudden turn and hurting my back more. I sat in the smoking section and got to talk to some great people and hand out more beads and even play a joke on someone's husband. After that, the adult men were pooped and wanted to go back to the room, even choosing to miss Wishes (It was 5pm). So us women stayed with the children and walked back over to Splash Mountain to let them ride again. Lisa and I sat out as I was in pain, and sitting there that long I noticed something under the bench across from me: it was someone's wallet. I immediately brought it to Lost and Found and the girl told me to wait. She wrote out a coupon for six free Cokes! I didn't expect anything at all; I only hope that if it would happen to me that someone would be that honest. We watched Wishes, hopped a boat to Wilderness Lodge, ate and watched the Electrical Water Pageant. Got back to our rooms at 10:30 to find the guys chilling out.
Next: Wednesday

Sounds like fun, especially with the Mardi Gras stuff.

How did you sneak your chicken salad inside?

And kudos to you for finding and turning in the wallet--but then we wouldn't expect anything but that from you.

ooOoo Debbie, sounds like a great start! Sorry your back kicked up. My hubby isn't too fond of the Rainforest cafe either.
Isn't it always nice when somebody says "thank you" when you least expect it? Six free COKES... :sohappy:

We wore our Mardi Gras beads, too. People were asking us about them all day. "Where can I get some like those?" "Did you get them at Universal?"

Taking time to bring extras and to hand them out was very generous of you!

Each morning Mary's husband made 14 sandwiches, wrapped and packed them. We put them in a backpack along with some Capri Sun, bottled water, and other snacks and rented a locker. Noone ever told us anything. Good thing, as Mary and Lisa were on budgets bigtime, and this really helped us save money.
As far as the wallet: can you tell my daddy's a retired NOPD? As soon as I saw credit cards, I zipped it up. I couldn't tell you if there was cash or where the person was from. I was just hoping that they JUST lost it and that it wasn't a pickpocket OR it wasn't there for a day or so and the person already cancelled the cards, etc.

Wednesday: MGM We got there and went straight to Rock and Roller Coaster. The rest went to TOT and I sat out (once was enough). Then, they all went back to RNR as the line was only 15 min. Rode GMR, did the Backlot tour, then I headed up front to get my 12 year old. He wanted to do MGM by himself as he can't handle alot of stimulation with others. I tell ya, going with a child who suffers from depression/anxiety can wear me out. I had to pick and chose my battles. He was so happy and proud that he did this by himself. After, the pack went to see Star Tours, and Muppets 3-D. Don, Rich, Lisa, myself and Terry went back to the room as I needed a Vicodin. We rested and Lisa and I went to do laundry. When we returned at 8:30; we found the adults had brought the table and chairs outside, busted out the cards and beer, and had a game of Pedro going. They stayed outside until 1:30AM. I crashed at 9:30.
Thursday: Epcot Weather was drizzly. We walked right on SE. Went straight to Mission:Space where I sat out. By that time, Test Track was trying to open. We got in line and got all the way to the Cattle Herding section and stood there for 35 min. Finally we were able to proceed. We decided to break up and go eat. Mary, her husband, 16 yr old, and myself all went to Mexico so Mary and I could eat our beloved Pollo A Las Rojas. Lisa, Rich, Darci (16),and her boyfriend went to Japan to eat sushi. Don brought the younger ones to Mc whatevers. They did Norway, and Mexico, and I waited for Don. Then we all went to American Adventure. After that, I went back to the room to get warm clothes for all. It was freezing! I stood at the bus stop from 7:50 until 8:25 before a bus came. My husband was livid with me for taking so long (he had all the kids). We all watched Illuminations except Lisa and Rich, who had headed back to the room with me. They feigned tiredness, but I think they wanted to take advantage of some alone time. We took our time leaving after the show and returned to our room after 10.
Friday: Lisa, Mary, and I went to the Beltz malls. The Character Warehouses had what we were looking for. I got some nice shirts for $4.99, some hats for $4.99 and Mary and Lisa were pleased with their finds. I noticed that more shops that interested me have been built; particularly Bass Pro Shops. We decided to head for the parks around 3:30 since Magic Kingdom was open until 10pm. Well, big mistake. It was packed with cheerleaders. The boys went in and I took the adults to see the Contemporary, Poly, and Grand Floridian. By the time the monorail was pulling in; Lil' Don was calling me to say they wanted to leave because the lines were too long. So instead of Mary, Lisa and Daniel wasting a day; I went in with my annual pass and got the boys. I sent them out and I waited for Terry, who wanted to venture alone again. He was always dependable to return at the designated time. It was freezing and we headed back to Pop Century to find the food court jammed with people.
Saturday: left for home.........

Highs and Lows

High:
Pop Century: great value, nice resort for $
Crowds: weren't bad, except for our last day
Lil' Don finally brave enough to experience ALL the big boy rides. It was really nice to see him enjoy them
Friendly castmembers with one exception.
Losing seven pounds! and walking 25 miles in five days (I have the blister to prove it)
Lows:
virtually non-existent except that my oldest son did try my patience every day.
One rude security person at Epcot who found out he was a D*&^, in case he didn't know it.

Glad to hear all went well Debbie! It is always interesting dealing with your own families' needs, but much more of a challenge coordinating a larger group, more power to ya!

One question, well, actually two...
Did you avoid MS because of your back or not being sure of the experience (have you ridden before?)
Second question...did you save any beads for us?

See ya

I avoided M:S because of everything I've read, plus when the castmember told me of the spinning, having to do exactly what was recommended to avoid feeling the spin, plus, I'm not into feeling the G force. The G force on Rock and Roller Coaster is about all I care to take.
I have several gross in my garage, but you have to show me something for the really good ones :animwink: :p

Who was the security moron at Epcot? I know a couple there.....

I don't know who it was. See, this is what happened......I was either having a blonde moment, or was a tired parent. When I exited Epcot to go get all of the clothes for everyone; I noticed this huge NO BAGS sign. So I asked the ^*^* if this meant I couldn't bring a bag back in. At the time I reasoned that being so late, maybe they changed a policy. So he's not telling me what I needed to know, and he's avoiding eye contact with me. All he had to say was "Ma'am, yes you can bring bags, but the entrance has been shifted to over there". That's all he had to say.
He's probably some cop wannabe who can't pass the muster of a real police entrance test; yet he thinks this position gives him some type of power. And those are the type that police depts. don't need.

Be very careful what you ask for!

Understand about the G's, that IS the ride, so if you don't wan't that...
I just tend to think the warning factor is overdone. If you follow instructions, "spinning" isn't a problem, most don't perceive it as such. It seems to affect those with inner ear sensitivities that aren't easily categorized as motion sickness, spinning, seasickness or any more common sensitivity. There just seems to be more fear with this than with extreme roller coasters...

I was so worried when I rode MS that I let my son & husband go on first. They
said it wasn't bad at all so my youngest & I went on with them & there was no
problems at all. It really is more hyped up then it should be. If you keep looking
at the screen in front of you then you're all set.
