Death on EE

Placing blame or finding fault with how any media outlet is presenting a story makes little or no sense to me at all. They are in business and do stories the way they do because people want it that way. The media is providing a product in high demand. I sure don’t fault the media in any way for that.
Sadly you are right. News broadcasts are no different than any other TV show. They will do whatever they need to in order to get ratings thereby increasing what they can charge for advertising. Until the majority of viewing audiences say no mas and stop watching we will continue to have mountains made out of mole hills by the media.

More Info

AOL through the AP had this to add to their report:

AOL said:
Before Tuesday's death, at least 15 people had died at Disney's theme parks in Florida and California since 1989, some with previous health conditions.

Not quite sure what that adds, but they felt it was relevant information. Maybe just to make their story sound different from the clones out there.

Here's the article about Tourist dies on Disney Everest Roller Coaster

http://www.orlandosentinel.com/business/custom/tourism/orl-everest1907dec19,0,2955186.story

And the last paragraph was amazing also:

"The death is the fourth associated with a Disney attraction this year. Most recently, a Disney ride attendant, Karen Price, 63, died Nov. 29 after an accident in which she was struck and knocked down by a ride car at Primeval Whirl in Animal Kingdom."

Remember, when Disney just reported that she fell off a platform??

Uhh no, I remember the report that she was struck by the vehicle, more inside info was that her costume got caught by the vehicle and she was thrown from the platform.

When it comes to the local Orlando media outlets and the way they present a story; many of us who live in Orlando know that some will use phrases or words which hype a story (for their own commercial purposes) more than others. They will use terms in a 'tease' that sensationalize the story more than another. I think every market in the country has at least one local station or newspaper you can say that of.

The challenge is that when someone from another market sees or reads that report they don't have the proper context to temper their view of how the story is written based on how that particular media outlet reports. Many people locally have a similar view that channel 6 is among the worst at sensationalizing stories; and that's our opinion based on our experience with them. Others will disagree with us, which is why there are multiple media outlets for us to choose from.

As frustrating as I often find it to be, 'any' report about anything with the word Disney in it gets eyeballs for the Orlando media outlets. The event or report doesn't even need to have anything to do with Disney; there was a robbery recently that happened 'near Disney'. It's kind of nuts, but is what it is. If the media didn't report on these sort of things, they'd get slammed for 'covering up' for Disney which isn't what anyone wants either.

The bottom line 'in my opinion' is that these things are and should be reported by local media. However, they should not be used to improve the ratings of a media outlet by choosing words in the story which sensationalize it to a scale inappropriate to the actual event. That is even more important when the event involves a loss of life which is unfortunate no matter where it happens.

I agree with you, I just got flamed a couple of times for showing that I thought there was a discrepancy in the way the Sentinel reported it and Channel 6. I thought the Sentinel had a much nicer way of putting it. And I thought Channel 6 toned things up. It wasn't even a complete slam on the media.
 Don't take the disagreement from others in a personal way. They were just disagreeing with your assessment of the reporting. Since you are new here it may help you to know that most every time that the media (esp. OS) reports on Disney that there is a group of super-loyalists that think that the media is trying to "take down" Disney. And then there is a group that responds and says "No, it's just fair reporting". Eventually, if not quickly, the original story is lost in the debate. That's why Jimbo wrote in the second post of this thread "can we not turn this into a debate this time?" If you really want to see what these threads can turn into, go back and read the old threads on the death of the little boy on Mission: Space. Now, that's flaming! :fork: :D

Hey, I might be able to shine some light here. I was a TV news producer for several years. I'll write you the teases.

Another Death at Disney World in less than a month... more at 5....

Another fatality on an Animal Kingodom attraction... Plus an investigative report on the safety at the Disney park... at 6....

Death at Disney Park -- Rape at a Disney Resort, at 11.

My news director had his favorite tease ever.
A murder, a rape, and a robbery, at 11. Flashes of video for each. He didn't fear airing the promos during afternoon cartoons either.

Man, 11 must be a bad neighborhood. I bet it is located near Gunpoint and Knifepoint. I always hear about robberies happening at Gunpoint and Knifepoint. I can't believe people still live in these places.:lookaroun

I'm just always shocked that these things are always so well coordinated. And that this specific news channel would know to be there 3 hours ahead of time to promo it for 11. Now that's investigative journalism.

Wow!

Wow, that guy is from my town.
I don't know who that was, but Navarre's high school chorus is doing the DCC this weekend (which I am in).

Weird coincidence....

Ha now THAT was totally OUT OF CONTROLL. Gah just totally ridiculous. It was back to blaming the death of someone on other people and such blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Im just so glad this thread hasn't turned into that. Better talking about the press than something no one has any controll over. Everyone deserves a chance to voice their opionion on things, so don't take it as a slam if someone doesn't agree with things. Weither people agree with you or not, it is still you're opinion and you deserve the same right everybody gets to voice that opinion. So far, overall, this has been a fair discussion on both sides of things and a mature one at that.

My sympathies to the family

Well the latest is that the deceased suffered from heart problems, arrhythmias, and had an enlarged heart. Clearly someone who is advised against riding this attraction.

I've had 6 or 7 concussions over the past 10 years of my life. I loved everest, i loved tower, i loved M:S, but i wont ride them because its not worth the health risk. These are great attractions but i just cant ride them anymore.

Wow! Better stop knockin' your noggin'. I've had 3 concussions, and the doctor told me it wouldn't be good to have another.

Since this man had a history of heart problems, I wonder what made him take the risk?

I had surgery to repair a heart valve a few months ago.. I ride whatever I like.

I get my heartrate up much more in a regular workout than I do on any ride.

Wow, nice to see you can still type Eric Lindros. Sorry about having to hang up the skates a few months ago...

Despite being away for what seems years, I come back in to see what kind of first hand info on this story I can find. What I find is the same threads as in the past. Only the names have changed. Anyway, another sad story at the Happiest place on Earth...:( Thoughts go out to the family.
