having read this thread i am now convinced that i don't want charging privileges on my kttw card. this way it will work in my opinion how it should, i'll tip what i feel is necessary without havng to fight with a server or manager.

and i won't have to worry about someone putting charges on my card that aren't correct. i always carry me wallet anyways, so the room charging privileges never benefited me anyways.

Will you have 6 or more in your party?

at times, yes. sometimes no. i also don't like at planet hollywood the waitress asked for our kttw card at the beginning of the meal. at the time it had charging privileges on it, so i told her no, she could swipe it at the end of the meal like every other restaurant i've visited at disney.

If you have 6 or more in your party, the auto grat of 18% is mandatory (unless there are service issues, and then by all means, you SHOULD take it up with the manager so s/he can address the issue). If you have less than 6, then tipping will be at your discretion.

Not sure why the Planet Hollywood person asked for your card first, I've never run into that before.

Here is a question.

If you have six or more people,
&
the tip of 18% is automatically added
&
you have alcohol on the tab
?
are you tipping on the booze? Is it included in the total they are calculating the tip on?

You will be charged 18% on both the food and alcohol (or extra specialty drinks/extras/anything not included in the DDP)

the 18% isn't mandatory, as tipping in florida isn't mandatory, you just have to tell them in advance that you want to leave a cash tip. but my fear is if they don't think i leave enough something might get charged to my room.

Right On!, This automatic mandatory grat-tip crap is gonna ruin my trip, i swear if i have to fight at every dinner about the grat i'm gonna scream. It's a free dinng promotion to get me to come to WDW and spend like $7000 during their slow season at the peak of hurricane season, i just don't want to be told how much i HAVE to leave as a grat. espesically at the buffets. I committed myself a year ago to WDW for this trip and i'm sick of people telling me how much i should leave for a tip. I'll leave what i feel is deserved, at the buffets i can guarantee you it's gonna be less that 18%, who came up with that number anyway, why not have the wait staff work for free and charge us 40% or 50% grat to pay their wage. Unlike regular restaurants, at WDW the tables are packed all day everyday, these servers make a nice wage even at 10% grat, i don't feel bad for them, if the money wasn't good they would be working somewhere else. Anyway, i just don't want to be told how to tip. I will have 6 each night for 9 nights, so i have to deal with it soon enough. Sept. 12-22. MikeB

This doesn't sound right at all. As far as I know, the only people who have a mandatory tip are those using the DDE discount card. You should be able to leave whatever you want in whatever form you want. The 18% and 20% amounts on the receipts are just suggested amounts. Did you talk to a manager about this?

And for the record, 2 of my worst ever dining experiences happened at Whispering Canyon. The service was absolutely deplorable and having given it 2 chances now with miserable results I have lost all desire to eat there again.

You're right..it wasn't right at all. We were a party of 2 adults, 1 -12 yr old and 1 -8 yr old. Service was awful. We did let management know. Server was just really huffy about it. That was the first and only time we used our keys..after that we used the girls cards because they didn't have charging prvldgs. That worked well for us..until our last meal at the sit down rest. in Mexico/ Epcot. The server said "you need to write down exactly how much cash you are leaving me. They use this for tax purposes." I don't know if this was true or he was just trying to see how much money we were leaving.

By the way, after the bad service and long bus ride back to the parks we decided we wouldn't make an effort to go back to WC. Only as a last resort so to speak.

Actually, when you agree to the terms of service of your DDP, you are agreeing to a mandatory 18% gratuity on parties of 6 or more. If service is bad, then, by all means, have the manager adjust it.

If you simply do not wish to tip the DDP required amount for your party, I believe they can still charge it back to your room and cause an inconvenience for using your park tickets/rooms keys that are tied to your KTTW card, regardless of having charging privildeges or not.

Not saying they will, but, just don't be surprised if it happens. You signed on and agreed to the amount when you purchased the DDP, so if the rules don't appeal to you, you are free to cancel it and pay OOP (although I believe all restaurant menus now state that parties of 6 or more will be charged 18% gratuity, so I would suggest cancelling all of your reservations and rebook them as to NOT be tied to your MYW package to avoid any inconvenience that a restaurant may place upon your card before trying to enter your room).

Read my above response to the other poster opposed to the auto grat that is agreed upon when signing up for the DDP. If you don't like it, feel free to cancel the DDP, but don't be surprised if much of your day is spent trying to enter your room with a key that doesn't work for non payment of funds due to refusal to adhere to the terms of service you agreed on when agreeing to do the DDP.

Once again, if there is a problem with service, please take the time to contact management of the problem. If you are simply not happy with the TOS that you agreed to at the beginning, then do not be shocked when there is a room charge on your key which in turn disables your key from working in your door. The union contract for Disney Servers was decided upon prior to your booking (June or July 2007), and you agreed to the terms set forth. Your argument doesn't hold water in the server's eyes, nor will it most likely hold water in Disney's eyes. They may give you a couple of free FP's for your 3 hours of argument trouble at the counter, but, really, is it worth it?

YOU signed up for a certain package. If you don't like the package, then cancel your free dining.

In our case we were not a party of 6 or more. We were a family of 2 adults, one 12 yr old and one 8 yr old. Service was awful. The waiter insisted we had to pay either the 18 or 20% tip and it had to be charged to our KTTK card. We wanted to leave a cash tip. Waiter charged tip to our KTTK..but charged a $35 tip! Far more than the 18/20%. I don't know if they would have corrected the charge if I hadn't had my receipt. But we did get it taken care of. After that we never used our adult room keys (they were the only ones w/charging prvldgs). So not every place was adding the 18% to groups of 6 or more. That is where we had our issues. If service is good I don't mind. If service is great, I'll leave more. But if service is horrible..sorry..its a tip for good service..not a mandatory payment. We saw several different people at different locations questioning the servers regarding their DDP and tips. This was before the Free Dining Promotion.

Ok, I'm going to confuse myself even more now by asking questions!:veryconfu:p

My family and my parents (& my brother) are on seperate reservations. We are having three meals together which means we will be a party of six (or more) and the tip will be added, correct!?! So what happens when we go to redeem our TS credits. We'll have to give our KTTW for our TS credits and my parents will have to give their KTTW for their TS credits... so who gets to pay the tip? Will it be added to both of our receipts, will it be split accordingly??? Do I have to tell the server before hand that we're on seperate reservations? Sorry to ask so many questions but I've never had to deal with mandatory tip before and I've never eaten with a large party before - so I don't really know how it all works!

I am are traveling next week to WDW with my inlaws. We all have free dining. And there are 6 of us traveling together. 3 in one room and 3 in the other. I booked all our dinner reservations together at one table. This is what I think...... I am going to assume, that after each meal, we will receive one bill for the table. She will have asked us ahead of time, all waitresses in the past have, if we are on the free dining plan. After the meal, she will take our cards and remove 6 TS meal total. After removing each of our meals, what should be left on the bill is our tip. And any other items such as appetizers which are no longer covered under the dining plan. Then I plan on splitting the tip 50/50 with my inlaws. I will definately bring cash for the tips. I never allow them to put charging privileges on our cards. I always hear about problems with it. I rather pay cash for items or use my credit card right there, or my disney rewards card. Am I confusing everyone? I think I'm confusing myself. It sounds good in my head, I don't know if I'm explaining myself right......

Heading for the great escape.
I have never been keen on charging tips, as Im worried that the servers dont see all the money. That is of course if I actually tipped. Forgot myself there.

Credit cards can be exploited - just like KTTW cards/room keys - when it comes to tips. The trouble with credit cards is that you won't learn of any "mystery" charges until you are home. Good luck getting those straightened out 30 days later with no receipts (lost, thrown out by then).

The safest way to go is no charging privileges on KTTW cards and cash tips.

Disney does spiel when you make reservations that for parties of 6 or more gratuity of 18% is automatically added to your final bill.

I recently stayed on property with a large group split up in multiple rooms. When using the dining plan we put all of the meals on one room key as much as possible. It saved a lot of time and trouble and we had no mistakes.:)

wow. i don't know where you get your facts from so let me help. this is from the disney website, but i can't find the word mandatory in the statement at all.

*Gratuities are not included unless otherwise indicated. An automatic 18% gratuity charge will be added to your bill for parties of 6 or more. An automatic gratuity charge may also be added to your bill for items you order that are not included in the Disney Dining Plan (e.g., alcoholic beverages). Merchandise or photo-imaging products that may be offered at Character Dining Experiences are not included, except at Cinderella's Royal Table.

nope, it's not in there. anyone willing to leave over $21 for a buffet breakfast that feeds 6 people mediocre food please feel free. disneys food is already overpriced, and i'm supposed to tip 18% on top of already overpriced food? nah i don't think so. wages are mandatory, my employer must pay me what i make an hour for 8 hours. gratuity is not mandatory.
here let me help you some more -

Definitions of gratuity on the Web:
  • [SIZE=-1]
  • a relatively small amount of money given for services rendered (as by a waiter)
  • an award (as for meritorious service) given without claim or obligation
if disney wants the 18% mandatory they should call it a service charge. i don't plan on tipping 18% for service that is below what i get at my local dennys at some of disneys reataurtants. and the more people tell me that i have to tip the less i probably will.
