Parties of 6 or more are required to leave a tip of 18% regardless of service. I didn't mind that so much until we ate at Chrystal Palace. Its a buffet and yet I had to pay $30 for someone to bring our sodas. He only checked on our table twice.

If the service is not good, complain, they will let you adjust your tip. We were a party of 13, Christmas of 2005. We were having dinner at Biergarten. It was late in the evening. Service was horrible. We had to get up and take our glasses over to the service counter area to ask for refills. We moved our plates to an empty table behind us because the restaurant was fairly empty. We were not on the dining plan, but back then groups of 8 or more had automatic tip added on. I guess the server knew she was guaranteed a good tip regardless of service. This was the very first time we ever had to complain about a meal. They adjusted the tip.

Gotta agree with MikeB!! Tipping has spiraled out of control lately. Tipping should only be done for a dinner experience that is above and beyond ordinary. If your waiter/waitress really wants a tip, he/she will provide you with that top notch service.

But anymore, waiters/waitresses now expect a tip regardless of the service they provide. CoasterKing :king:

there was actually a waitress posting on here that said she expected 20%. i see gratuity as a reward that is given for good service, like a bonus you might get at christmas. i've gotten christmas bonuses before of 3-5000 after taxes, if i would have said i expected a certain amount i surely would have gotten nothing.

You may be forgetting a few things here. A server who works in a cheaper place has a higher turnover ratio. You do not spend two hours at Denny's so the server in a cheaper restaurant will fill his/her table two or three times in the amount of time that a fine dining server will fill the same table once.

Second, at finer dining establishments a server is tipping out a busser, food runner, bar, and sometimes a captain.

There is also an expectation of better service at a fine dining establishment. That may not always happen, but this is the thinking.

As far as what they make, I have known servers who have made over $100,000 a year. Do they deserve it?
I absolutely agree that no one should be forced to tip for bad service. I am not trying to offend anyone by this post, I am simply stating what I know about it.

i've seen the stories on tv about waitresses that make 100,000 a year at the nicer places too yankspy. i'm thinking more like lecellier where the bill can easily reach $100 for 2 people and on more than one occasion i've had to wait for my server to bring me my check. and i don't believe the answer is just not going because the service is bad, the food there is wonderful. besides, as long as alot of people are tipping regardless of the service they receive why should they do better?

i've been to disney 6 times and we usually only eat sit down meals and i think i've had 3 or 4 servers that i tipped for exceptional service; i guess for the most part the service at the restaurants i go to isn't that bad, it just isn't that great.
rainforest cafe comes to mind as a place where the service is constantly sub-par. but the wifes 3 year old cousin will love it, so we'll probably go.
maybe when i visit the yachtsman next week or flying fish in dec i'll get excellent service, and if i do my wife will make sure i tip well.

We have had these discussions before and I think we actually somewhat agree here. The rub here seems to be two things. First, servers who seem to be doing funny things with DDP and payment/tip. I have to say that I am a bit shocked at this. I have witnessed servers who have done some dishonest things as well, however, they were immediately fired upon doing so.

Second, people are upset about being forced to tip for lousy service. I completely agree there. :)

Here is a tip. The next time you go to Le Cellier speak to the manger before you sit down and explain that you had lousy service the last time you were there. If the manager is worth his/her salt, they will make sure that you get top knotch service this time.

No. not at disney, but places that have similar restaurants that you would find on property. I would have thought that would be the last place that one would see such a thing. That is a serious offense and restaurants can be held accountable so they will generally come down hard when something like that happens. I can see an isolated event but it seems somewhat prevalent judging by some of the replies that I have seen. Have fun on your trip. You will have to let me know about Flying Fish. I always wanted to try it.

the only thing i've seen a waitress do that was odd was when we were at crystal palace. apparantly they had some liquid from a trash bag leak into the can. no problem at all, they took it into some room off to the side with a sink in it and with the door open put the trash can and all in the sink to wash it out. i wasn't feeling the magic at that point. sure i'll let you know about flying fish. the funny thing is i don't like seafood, im going for the steak.

My father- in-law had a similar experience. He had a gift card we gave him for fathers day one year for Bennigins. He used it to pay for the meal. Then used his debit to pay for the alcohol. The waitress was horrible, and they had to keep asking for her to come back to the table. My mother-in-law,[ after about the 6th time ] got fed up,and asked to have the waitress bring the check. Their waitress comes out,my father-in-law hands her the gift card and his debit card and she walks away. She comes back tosses the reciepts on the table and walks off without saying a word.He fills out the reciepts and writes No Tip in the tip line.On the way out they asked for the manager told him about the girls poor service and attitude, and informed him they were not leaving a tip.The manager offered to take care of the bill, but they refused as there was nothing wrong with the food. A couple day later my mother-in-law is checking the bank account and finds a $125.00 charge from the restaurant on the debit card. The bill was only suppose to be for $25.00 for the booze. She called the restaurant asked for the manager and explained what happened, and that she had the copies of the reciepts. He asked her to come up and he would take care of it.When the manager checked their reciept copies,it had the No Tip in the tip line but someone wrote a 1 in front of the 25.00,making the bill 125.00.Unfortunately since he could prove the waitress did it he couldn't do anything. At least they credited their account for the difference
