But a CoC that restricts what your able to do in your life when your not on campus? I dont like it. Now if the gov. made an order regarding attending events, then yea the university should be able to punish those that break these types of orders

I know. the article just got me thinking in general about public universities doing this. I know a few schools near me threated students if they went to events off campus...
Notre Dame is a private University but I don’t think its an issue for public ones either. If people don’t want to follow the rules set they don’t need to go to school there.

Well, this creates tension in families. I know within mine, we had to argue with one member who thinks COVID is a hoax... then goes down the path of "this might be my last thanksgiving" and all that after suggesting to get together outside with masks, but not eat at the table like we usually do.

I strongly disagree with that line of thought. I believe in CoCs, but a public university telling people that they cant do things off campus that is perfectly legal..... No that doesn't sit right with me.
Look at what's going to your neighbors to the north to see what the effect of getting together for Thanksgiving does.
I don't think a vast number of people believe it is a hoax. On an individual level, they (including me) look at it as not any worse than a bad flu if they (I) get it.
All that for a meal. Adapt people! Have zoom calls during the meals! Something! Sigh I've lost a bit of hope in society during covid
I think the biggest reason for cases is rising is 2 things. One is too many think like @DisneyCane in that it's just a mild flu so we I am going to live my life.
I don't know about Ontario specifically but for Canada as a whole, the cases were increasing noticeably before Thanksgiving. I don't know that current daily count can be traced specifically to Thanksgiving gatherings.
There are plenty of examples of colleges prohibiting behavior that my not be illegal. In this case it’s behavior that is directly detrimental to the health and well being of other students.
They have been tracing a lot of cases back to Thanksgiving. We have an app for contact tracing, which many have downloaded, and they have been doing contact tracing all along.
I wish we could live in a happy medium. No, we dont need to hibernate for a year without going outside, but we also need to take this seriously by following the standard safety measures. It is not just like the flu.
Well, I've been living my life as much as allowed (including attending one of those super spreader events a couple of weeks ago) and I haven't gotten it yet unless I have been completely and totally asymptomatic as in not feeling one bit different on any day since March. I've actually monitored my temperature daily as a curiosity experiment. Nor has anybody that I spend time around or any of their close contacts gotten it.
Such as? (I'm actually curious) I guess we have different ways of thought. I think its best for those actions to be made by the government, not a public university. It doesn't seem right to me. I also think it opens a can of worms in terms of, if the university is threatening people with expulsion for attending outside parties, then students should be able to win lawsuits if they contract COVID traced to a university interaction.
I’ve been saying this for months now. The whole catch phrase of “learning to live with the virus” has been used to mean it’s no big deal and so no need for restrictions. In reality we should all really embrace truly learning to live with the virus which means follow the recommendations: wear a mask, practice social distancing, use good hygiene, avoid large group gatherings and avoid indoor activities where you mix with the public (especially dining and bars where masks aren’t worn). If we all did this stuff the vast majority of activity could take place and nobody would need to hide in their basement. The reason cases surge out of control is people aren’t following these things. Nobody wants to go back to stay at home orders, but some people sure don’t act like it when they refuse to get with the program.
