Of course. But the original recommendations were based on saving medical-grade masks for health workers...as they should be. Please see the above comments about Fauci changing his stance in many other videos.

A major step in resolving things is one of the hardest things for people to do. To preface things with "I don't know" "Based on what we know" or "What we know so far" etc...
No one likes those preface or edits them out in media, so we get mixed messages, or lack of trust. I speak with myself included. Humility is very difficult.

Quick hits-
-I'm resolved to not have feelings about wearing a mask. It's going to happen.
-I know masks provide some effectiveness vs the virus no matter how tiny. Especially when all parties wear them. So I don't eat food that may be expired for the same small chance of problem. Cool w/ masks. Even if their biggest effects are to lure scared rabbits out of their hole.
-very curious to see the effects of the idiot factor. The American citizen's ability to follow simple rules of government, society, hygiene, etc. I've seen videos of people cutting holes in them to breath easier.....think about that. Or not wear masks properly, or pick their nose with a mask, constantly fidget with it and touching their face, rewearing disgusting masks to save money (you know this will happen) and what will the inside of the masks look like during allergy season, etc. The dumb dumb factor could be the biggest issue of all.

Ohioguy is right that opinions change, data can cause recommendations to change (or perhaps the original recommendations were made with an eye to preserving what was a scare resource at the time and the full rationalization was not made public). but a lot of people will only remember that first recommendation. Or, if they don't like the second one will use the first as (reasonable, IMO) ammunition.

As you said, the data changes. Recommendations change. In a week, they can come out and say that new research shows that masks are spreading the infection and not preventing it, and people will be burning their masks.

So many people (including many here) have created the narrative that we should not question the authorities such as CDC, WHO, Fauci, etc. The same authorities who are clearly fallible since they were wrong about masks 30 days ago. Whose to say the "data" won't change again? And again, what type of research did they do that was never done in the past with viral outbreaks?

In the end, this whole process has shown that most people will do EXACTLY what their told and then defend the marching orders. Any person who questions it or even points out that the information has been innacurate time and time again is simply labeled a whacky conspiracy theorist.

The recommendations changed when it was discovered that this particular virus is prone to widespread asymptomatic airborne spread. It's that simple.

What changed is the understanding of the relationship between being symptomatic and being contagious.
