We do all kinds of things for public health reasons. This isn't something magic and special that's different.

If conditions got that bad, I would expect all kinds of public health measures to come back.

It's like saying, why does the grocery store need to be clean. Everyone can just wash their stuff when they get home. It'll be fine.
That analogy with food safety doesn't really work. Once food is contaminated the consumer can't do anything about it. With COVID, the "consumer" can get vaccinated and/or use highly effective PPE (except for unlucky people like @helenabear with very small faces).

Pssst. And kids. Though I survived with other masks. I do think the move of N95s seems a bit unfairly biased against other PPE though. None of us will ever get a good fit unless fitted properly anyway.

Often food can be washed or cooked to eliminate the risk of issues. Not all of course. It isn't all that bad of an analogy. Either you take precautions or not.

Use a different example then, Public Health is large field. Sanitation, smoking, labeling, clean water, whatever. Public Health is a "public" problem and often involves "public" solutions and actions not just "individual".

In that pretend would where conditions have changed, we would no longer have an effective vaccine. If you don't want to live in a society that deals with stuff as a society, then don't live in society. Stop trying to say society cannot do anything and it's only up to the individual.

Again, for those not following, these comments were not about masking today based on the current conditions. They are about what condition changes would require masks to come back and how those condition changes relate to the concerns around masking vs the very undesirable conditions themselves. A scenario we hope doesn't happen.

Yes. Let’s go back to what didn’t work the first time.

And here we go again.....

H3N8
Where are we going?

1st paragraph

"China has recorded the first human infection with the H3N8 strain of bird flu, the country's health authority said on Tuesday (April 26), but said the risk of it spreading among people was low."

2nd,3rd and 4th paragraph

"A four-year-old boy from central Henan province was found to have been infected with the variant after developing a fever and other symptoms on April 5."

"No close contacts were infected with the virus, the National Health Commission (NHC) said in a statement."

"The child had been in contact with chickens and crows raised at his home, it added."

vs

Why post a china story and ignore what is happening here?

Has this been posted?

I knew we’d had a ton of asymptomatic infections but was surprised they know think it’s as high as 60% of adults and 75% of children that have been infected.
Hadn't seen that link posted, but have been following that data and it supports why we haven't seen much of a surge in hospitalizations even after the latest subvariant of omicron has pretty much pushed the last one out.

As testing is too low, the case count here is pretty much bunk:

However, hospitalization data can be accepted more easily as legitimate:

And though there is the slightest upward trend in hospitalizations, quite a large number of those cases in the hospital are likely individuals who tested positive at the hospital with covid but were likely not in the hospital for covid symptoms. Hospital systems in many areas of the country aren't even bothering with isolation of covid patients from non covid any longer.

The large volume of immunity that resulted after the winter omicron surge certainly has had a beneficial impact on the current situation.

Beginning of March numbers were 43% for adults and 58% of kids. https://www.beckershospitalreview.c...mericans-have-had-covid-19-cdc-estimates.html

This is skewed by only those who go in for blood work though.

If it were prior infections keeping people out of the hospital I would expect the UK numbers to be on par with the US not so much higher. They had Omicron before we did with rampant spread.

Then what would be your explanation for the lack of a second omicron surge as has been seen in the UK? One hypothesis is the lack of vaccination by so many in the US has led to a higher percentage of natural immunity due to infection vs the higher rate of vaccine immunity in the UK which may wane faster than natural immunity.

Bingo. you can't vaccinate your way out of this with a vaccine that is non sterilizing.

I believe the AZ vaccine that many in the UK received wasn't as effective as the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, so that's a possible explanation.

Oh yippee. Anti-vax crap is back. Nevermind that very few vaccines give sterilizing immunity but still do their job to help. And many do not agree with immunity from infection being longer lasting than vaccines.

Your July trip is fine ;)

From your lips to the Big Man's ears......fingers/toes etc. everything is crossed lol
