My wife was talking to friends in Italy this morning. You are right, they are extremely concerned over this and an elderly friend is staying home alone but his daughter is bringing him food and supplies daily. She is not entering the house for fear of carrying Covid19 into the home. Thank God for the phone and internet that allows those is isolation to be able to communicate and get some entertainment and news. For the elderly this is a major concern and I pray for them. However, we must not give into the fear. The vast majority need to live and work. I will make sure my wife calls and talks to her friend daily so he knows we are okay and that he knows we are with him.

I never advocate fear.

Though I do advocate science, observation and common sense in all things

...it’s a
Curse 🤪

I'm doing well actualy - my cancer markers have gone from 4000+ to 20, and my last ct scan showed no cancer in any major organs. I elected for a hysterectomy to prevent this from ever happening again, but that choice was left up to me.

It’s a tough fight...but oncologists are the fighters. Nothing but respect for them AND their patients.

(Backstory...both my parents had aggressive types in my early teens - aka a LONG time ago. Tools have gotten much better)

After a few bad experiences with the medical community, I had pretty much lost respect for the medical community, but this team I have right now is beyond awesome. I wouldn't wish this on anybody, but I know I'm in good hands!

And do you not lift that until the virus is gone? How long does that take? And it still doesn't guarantee success.

I mean, I get it...you can get really draconian and just shut it all down, but what are we avoiding here? This isn't ebola.

Why don't we shut everything down for the flu that kills 500,000 people/yr?

You manage it according to how your healthcare systems can cope with the numbers. Measures may have to come and go after the initial surge, depending on local conditions. Until we develop a vaccine or more effective widespread treatment that allows us to limit outbreaks in the first place.

"Hospital system in Northern Italy is on the verge of collapse."

Why don't we shut everything down for the flu that kills 500,000 people/yr?

That's why. Our healthcare system can manage the typical flu numbers, because they are spread out and controllable. This is not.

If they don’t stop the spread...the amount of ICU beds necessary in the US on SOME predictions is short by 50%. That’s an issue.

Hopefully we get nowhere near that point.

But this notion to dismiss actual intelligent doctor opinions out of hand without thought in favor of the tantrum nonsense of a dim-witted, egotistical fool “leading” the response is just the work of a cow’s hind end.

To your point, I guess that is why folks with mild symptoms are being treated at home rather than the hospital?

You don’t give them places to go. Close non-essential workplaces, institute work from home if possible. Limit means of travel. Reduce exposure to the regular and obvious places people gather. Give people the resources to practice social distancing (Reduce capacity in public spaces like restaurants and shops, provide extra surface cleaning, etc) in the places that are left.
In my town all it would take is closing the Starbucks, Targets, and the mall. Grocery shopping would be different. There are options but none that would work would without being inconvenient for people and as we've seen plenty on this thread, inconvenience for the greater good is unacceptable.

The financial people are pleading for congress to enact mandatory paid sick leave...

Saying that policy would alleviate the crippling effects of health scares.

They have a point.
I just stumbled on an article on CNN that made it sound like Chinese companies are still required to pay their employees while they are put for this. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

This might put a kink in your business?

ETA!!! The story was reported incorrectly added to by the health department to make it align with State, it is sick people that traveled to affected hot spots. Same as State department.

Nevermind

I

I own a small business. I cannot afford to pay my employees not to work. Most companies are in this same position.
My family sold their mom and pop restaurant about 5 years ago and they wouldn't have been able to pay anyone either. Even when hurricanes would shut down the city, the restaurant was on the same grid as the hospital so they were always up and running quick and in between everything was gas so we would get the ovens going, have the fridges on generators and sell nothing but pizzas. This was some of the busiest times we had because we were the only ones opened. This is an entirely different situation.

Yup I’m over in Sheffield and other than the toilet roll isle looking a bit of a mess (but still plenty there) you’d not really know anything was up.

Went to see Onward last night in a busy cinema, again nothing out of the norm going on there.

I keep seeing some real stupid comments on twitter where people are claiming that the UK and Europe are practically in anarchy. In reality it’s only having a big impact on Italy right now.

Little bit further North in Darlington here and only thing I've noticed is Morrisons (supermarket) dried pasta section had been cleaned out
