How big was your circle of people where you didn't do these things?

Spouse, kids, some more extended family, a friend or two?

How good were all of those people? Any of them a little more casual about the whole thing?

You're only as strict as your weakest link. In my case, it's mostly the oldest kid, teenagers are such a pain, along with their friends. Occasionally it has also been extended family. Even the most risk adverse people have a more risky day now and then. Luck plays a big role if in one of those the odds work out poorly.

Our upcoming WDW trip will probably be the riskiest thing we've done in 2 years, even if you just look at duration of the activity. We're just coming to terms with that.

I don't want to think of a teenager or child as doing something wrong for getting sick. It's a reality of life especially at school and the temptation kids have to live normally is natural.

We have avoided covid so far and I'm genuinely fearing that our number is up during this trip. We are tightly crossing our fingers. That's all we can do. It's a big step for us because we are quite cautious. Disney is something we can't pass up on. We can't. I'm also aware that we've been lucky to avoid it. Everyone else we know has had it including their little babies. Many of them are getting it from their kids at daycare. Just an ordinary day at daycare. I'm tired of cowering. I'd rather safely navigate living life at this point than sit with regret. Vaccinated people are very capable of having and spreading covid so we have to restore quality of life when we've done almost all we can and it's still here in about the same form as it was.

I think masks worked at Disney because we went twice without incident even though everyone was telling us we were insane to go. This trip will be the ultimate experiment : can it be avoided with one way masking? My guess is no but don't take my hope away 😆😰😷

Clearly a high risk COVID environment. Kids, of all ages, are little virus machines and disgusting. Schools also have notoriously poor ventilation. Good luck avoiding it another time. 🤞
Our district has done shockingly well at keeping outbreaks and exposures to a minimum. Even now with masks optional now, things are doing pretty good considering the situation in the fall. Can't say the same for other areas.

With all due respect, covid has been "going around" non-stop since 2020. Not sure what would be unique about a massive theme park that once reported 77k workers.

We go for our third post-closure trip soon and I shouldn't be in this thread lol. We plan to wear masks indoors but we know it's very likely not going to help. It's scary to hear how many people are casually mentioning getting covid from the happiest place on earth. It would be silly if I didn't dread the possibility. This trip is much more expensive than the last and being sick on vacation is horrible.

My neurotic worry is the daily hotel security checks. They sometimes come over when we are there and that makes me uncomfortable since they don't wear masks. Are we allowed to tell them to come back when we're gone? We're almost never in the resort more than two hours or so for mid day naps.
We had one come once in March when we were in our room taking a break. As soon as she saw us she just left. Enjoy your trip!

Well saying that is like spitting into the wind. Not much good. Why do you think we are still dealing with this COVID crap? Because people wouldn't mask up when they were first required to do so. Now that it is optional you think people in this country will care one bit about it? They still think it is a joke or some "commie plot" to steal their freedoms. I get what you are trying to do but anyone smart enough to do the right thing already knows this and the rest are either going to laugh at you ar try to fight you.

I am very pro-mask but even I realize that even though they can reduce spread they weren't going stop it completely on their own.

I have been very COVID cautious from the very beginning and full intended to wear a mask when we were in more high risk situations in the parks, but on our trip two weeks ago I ended up never putting on a mask.

We had been more cautious too. Our Disney trip in March we wore nothing except on transportation (mandated). My kid does continue to go to school though and honestly that alone has upped our risk significantly. We had far more closes exposures than I care to say.

The debates 2 years later feel so old. I'm like you, I know they weren't perfect but did help some.

That's a really good step for you. It truly is. Did you stay healthy? We were planning to reduce our mask wearing but the relentless onslaught of people claiming to get covid at Disney sealed it for me. On top of the obvious reasons, we don't want to miss an expensive park day and/or be stuck somewhere unfamiliar while sick. It might not work but we are choosing to be cautiously optimistic.

Just know that I'm genuinely jealous of every maskless person I see.😆

Seems the whole mask debate falls in the No True Scotsman fallacy. Masks, by themselves, cannot stop the virus. Examples above demonstrate that. China's near-total lockdown has proven it as well. I think we're entering into an endemic state at this point. Vacination reduces the chances of one getting a severe case; it's not 100% either. But, it's better than the possible outcome of none at all.

Be safe and I hope your loved ones never come down with a serious case of this.

Yes, because if everyone work a mask than coivd would have been eradicated off the face of the planet. Surely people can't still be believing this baloney.

I mean look at China. Welding people shut in their homes. Clearly its eradicated there! 🤔

Try putting words in other people's mouths. ;)

You wore nothing! Surprised we didn't hear about that on the news. ;)

As far as we know neither me nor my wife got infected.

Shocking... I even posted about it here too and it didn't make the news 🤣

Of course I actually hate masks but we had mandates in schools and in the city right up to when we left. I wasn't sure which way we'd go and even my kid was unsure. We went and only wore on planes and monorails. One bus trip too (drove the rest) so most of the time the masks were at the room.

We haven't really been wearing since we returned as well. I was asked for a funeral and did. Kid will go to DC next week and as of now if we pack masks it will be a just in case but likely remain untouched.

I'm unsure if we will wear while boarding and coming off the plain in June. The circulation otherwise on flights is fine for me. Unless life really changes I have no plans to mask otherwise. I've been a numbers person all along and while sure, there are risks, we've taken appropriate steps to do our best. I am having harder time with being fearful when the flu took out a loved one longer than covid has of my other loved ones lately. Not that I think they are the same of course, but that's another one I watch for. Also my stupid sinus infection has hit me harder than other things too but new allergy meds seem to help. But when a friend who is otherwise super unhealthy goes in for a tooth infection and is positive only for antibiotics to clear headache and body aches (likely related to the infection and not covid) I look at it less than I did a year or two ago. I blame omicron on that. We have yet to knowingly test positive here. If we do we'll make it I'm very sure and just stay home. Hsck I even stayed home until we were sure my sinus infection wasn't contagious.

I am the same way but when I was there in mid April, the ONLY times I wore it was in the stretching room at the HM, and the long lines at Pirates and Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway inside. That was it. The rest of the time we were either outside or able to distance ourselves away from others, by letting the crowds go in front of us and sit away from them. American Adventure for example. Other times we sat in the front like It's a Small World and didn't wear a mask.

We're heading back for the first week of July and I am hoping masks are still optional for the vaccinated. I really don't relish the thought of wearing one there in the 90 degree heat. I won't wear one unless I am in a location like I described, then I'll throw it on for a few minutes until I can get outside or away from the crowd.

I wore a mask for a year and half, got double vaxxed, stayed home from large gatherings, including family gatherings at holidays, taught virtual for one year, avoided bars and clubs, and still caught it twice. Tell me how effective the mask was at preventing me from getting covid then? Because I'm evidence they they're useless.

At the risk of stating the obvious, a single example is not evidence.

This whole line of reasoning, that some people still got COVID despite mask wearing and therefore masks were useless is so simplistic. They were intended to mitigate and reduce the spread of COVID.

At the end of the day, COVID is still a thing because of a lack of vaccinations. Masks were supposed to help ease the pain as we transitioned to a vaccinated society. We continue to suffer because a lot of people haven't done what they should have done long ago.

Who is suffering? This dramatic, doom and gloom, language is why the majority of people are no longer taking this stuff seriously.
Looks like Patti LuPone takes it seriously.
