1000? Thats not even close to enough. What on earth are they thinking. With the amount of expo centers and large stadiums in the US this should be a no brainer.
I think they are doing both. The hospital ships are not the whole solution, but that does help. I believe NY has 2 either there or coming. They also talked about cruise ships. The other factor is staffing the facilities. Not enough doctors and nurses to go around. I read somewhere that medical schools are graduating students early (a few months not years) so the new grads can start helping out right away.

I am not saying this to be a smartass but as a physician. At this point paying attention to the number of infected is not the most important part, it's paying attention to how many have died. That will be the indicator of how well your health systems are working to fight this.

Indeed, regardless of how many or how few will die in the end, for now, even with a low death rate, we can still get a spike in critical care cases that our health system can not handle all at once. Death rate could possibly be low, but the spread of the disease is high. And that causes a big spike in those who need critical care.

Flattening the curve is the top priority. Because if we don't, then critical cases that could have survived with critical care, won't. And that will increase the death rate.

London is prepping an arena as a 4600 bed emergency hospital with the army’s help. Even Manchester, way smaller than London, is preparing to use an arena to house 1000. And we are way way smaller than California.

If a person wears red in a lock-down pandemic, does anyone see it?

Yes, we do. More importantly, the goal is to have everyone share their team gear photos on social media.. support our team.. maybe put a smile on their face, and ours.

Even our school is doing things like Spirit Wear Friday’s and posting photos or short videos.

Might sound silly, but I think this is one time when social media is beneficial, and why not show solidarity and making the best out of a bad situation?

I took his post as just being a joke. It’s a good idea. Anything to help kids in these times. I will need to find red underwear since my kids still haven’t dressed for the day ;)

I posted this in the D'land section but posting it here as well because if a picture is worth 1,000 words than an interactive graph is worth...?

Two graphs with interactive sliders, the first one (which has one variable you can play with) follows the fourth paragraph, the graph at the bottom allows you to play with all variables.

Sorry but I couldn't edit the headline to make it apolitical.

Oh. My mistake. I’m only on day 3 of being home, this is what happens when you have 0 amount of face to face interactions with adults. 🤣

Seriously.

It's fine if someone personally doesn't want their kids to play video games (or have any kind of screen time) that much for whatever reason, but I hope they understand it's their personal choice and people that do otherwise aren't making parenting mistakes or are somehow worse parents. There's nothing harmful about playing video games for several hours a day; kids have been doing it for 40 years now. It's not going to make their child dumber or hinder their development.

Kids need exercise, of course -- they shouldn't be playing literally all day every day without ever getting off the couch or wherever. But as long as it's mixed in with sports or other activities, it's really not a big deal. It's not fundamentally different from playing a board game or cards or any other similar activity, and, depending on the game being played, can actually be a boost to cognitive development.

really? There’s a plethora of studies that have been done on the effects and dangerous of excessive screen time. They actually are very different from the other things you mentioned because phones are very much based on instant gratification, and kids (or anyone, really) are constantly having their brains flooded with dopamine while they play. Just search “screen time” and “dopamine” to see the results.

yes, screen time has it benefits! It can be a fantastic learning tool! Nothing wrong with using it as such! But multiple hours a day? Whether you believe the science or not, there are some real negative impacts excessive screen time can have on a child’s brain.

(this is not a judgment on parents who are letting screen time rules fly during quarantine.
Do what you have to to survive! But to say there is nothing bad about 7-8 hours of screen time use is...not wise.)

Minor (or not so minor) correction. The 1.5% death rate is of CONFIRMED cases. There could be (and likely are) around 10 times the actual cases.

My statement is not ignorant. Even if the deaths climb "dramatically" in raw number they still will be a very small percentage of the population.

Even in Italy where they did get completely overwhelmed, so far 0.012% (twelve hundredths) of their population has died from this disease.
First, your assumption on number of cases is pure speculation, we have no idea what the number of unreported cases are, or if people are ignoring the symptoms - in fact, we have reason to believe that the number of unreported cases, while of course higher, is not as high as you probably think. What we can see is % of people who have the virus vs % of people who were tested, and the rates lead me to believe that the virus isn't hugely widespread yet, thanks to distancing measures.

Second: comparing % of deaths to a population level is not how these things are measured, and drastically minimizes the human tragedy of all this. That many deaths in such a short window of time is nothing to trivialize. And no one in the medical community measures things in that way.

Third: deaths climb exponentially when left unchecked. We've seen that. Italy is slowing now thanks to lockdown. Given the rate at which growth multiplies, it's easy to see a scenario where there are a lot more infections and deaths absent the measures we are taking.

Big difference is this is spread out over a whole season, (Oct to April), and is mitigated by slow spread due to the vaccine, etc.

Coronavirus is rapidly spreading and no one has immunity. If left unchecked, the numbers of Coronavirus cases and deaths would easily dwarf the flu cases. Coronavirus deaths to date in the US represent about 1.5% of total cases and it's climbing (was 1.3% a few days ago).

I understand what you're saying... but I think if we really knew who all had or has coronavirus will little to no (mild) symptoms, the hospitalization and mortality rate would drop a lot. We just don't have all the data to know and while I understand all the panic due to all the unknowns... I just wonder if the numbers look worse than it really is - I know a lot who have had cold/flu like symptoms in the past month who never got tested for this but are ok now

Valid concern. When big red left Philly to coach the Chiefs a lot of people said he looked like the kool aid guy in his Chiefs gear. Looks better with the ring now.

My whine for the day-

Cincinnati Reds have the best lineup they’ve had in years. Now delayed.
Kiddo turns 10 in a few weeks, a planned GWL stay with friends prior to his bday, WDW the week of his bday.
Miami has a MLS team who I was really excited about.
We have tickets to several FCC games.
Champions League postponed.

Those are a few of the things that Corona has wrecked for us, and out of the entire list (not posted here) they’re the most inconsequential.

But, I was looking forward to Opening Day so much, hate that it isn’t happening!!!

As far as I know, those studies generally relate to toddlers, which is not what I'm talking about (nor am I talking about phone games). I'm talking about older kids (I also didn't say 7-8 hours). The instant gratification and dopamine hits exist in a small subset of games (again, mostly those phone "games"). You're looking at a small subset and then applying that across a broad spectrum; it's no different than saying watching Saw or Hostel is bad for a 5 year old therefore every movie that exists is bad for 5 year olds.

You can't group all video games together as one thing and say they're all the same just like you can't group all movies or books together and say they're all the same. There is plenty of research that suggests certain types of video games help cognitive and behavioral development. Most games are not based on instant gratification and dopamine hits.

Here's a good quote about it from a group of psychologists:
“The term video games refers to thousands of quite disparate types of experiences, anything from simple computerized card games to richly detailed and realistic fantasy worlds, from a purely solitary activity to an activity including hundreds of others, etc. A useful analogy is to the term food – one would never ask, ‘What is the effect of eating food on the body?’ Instead, it is understood that the effects of a given type of food depend on the composition of the food such as the number of calories; the percentage of protein, fat, and carbohydrates; the vitamin and mineral content; and so on."

Thankfully, we’ve been rewatching the Women’s World Cup, I have all LaLiga and Champions Games recorded, so we finally caught up on all of those.

might not have live sports, but at least it’s something. It would be neat if more past baseball games get shown, I haven’t seen that yet.

So....just read a story about a social media influencer that is in the hospital in Cali with the virus because of a challenge...THE CORONA VIRUS CHALLENGE .... He licked a public toilet. Apparently bits something on mostly tictok and kids are licking all kind of stuff as part of it. It was in the daily mail and New York post so.....take what you will from it. He claims himself he's in the hospital which could just be a stint but nonetheless. I saw another article where a man was arrested for licking produce. All the while a woman in Georgia was discovered dead, with her 4 ye old next to her. She was positive for the virus. She was a hospital mammogram tech. Why do people think it's funny or a joke. It's no wonder this virus is here. Mother Earth is p!$$ed and people are still laughing. If that kid is in the hospital, he shouldn't get priority over someone just because he's younger. I'm sorry but he should be Baker acted or something. A stunt like that could kill him.

When WDW does finally open I wonder how many people will be wearing face masks and rubber gloves while there? Course it would be hard to eat though..
