We’ve run into this, as well. It’s as if COVID is the only illness to worry about any more.

My youngest had a nasty breakthrough case of Flu A over Christmas break. If it would have been when school was in session, we would have had no choice but to send our oldest to school until he showed symptoms. No contact tracing the flu to an asymptomatic sibling, and archaic attendance policies would mean he’d lose all of those days’ work of close contact quarantine.

If we’re going to be serious as a society about minimizing respiratory virus season, that will all need to change. But we “lived with” so much in the past, I don’t see much societal appetite even though the infrastructure has vastly improved in the last 2 years.
What makes this all worse is that we did take it seriously just over a decade ago and it worked. Organizations and institutions made their sick policies much more open and flexible for the swine flu. People were allowed to just stay home if they felt cold or flu like symptoms and it didn’t kill everything. People didn’t just load around skipping school and work. People didn’t get sick at work and just “power through” they’d ent home and rested. And now we’re doing it again all because we “have to return to normal” no matter how stupid normal was.

That swine outbreak was shortly after I started my professional career. Everything happening now is what we feared and started gearing up for. Luckily, it didn’t materialize.

Even with better remote learning tools, and a proven ability to be productive at home for a number of people, we’ve taken steps backward.

If workers/students can “muscle through” at home, and not infect others but still get some or all of their work done, we should trial that model.

Like you said, it’s innate to want to be both productive and social. Most won’t abuse that system.

Since some of you refused to read the story I shared yesterday based on the mistaken (and frankly inexplicable) notion that The Guardian is an anti-vax tabloid, here's an interview of the person in question, Clive Dix, from Channel 4 News:

Some clarifications, given the penchant for kneejerk dismissals in this thread:
  • I do not endorse what Dix is saying and will continue to defer to scientific consensus on all matters related to COVID.
  • His views are worth knowing about because of his influential status (he is the former chief of the UK vaccine taskforce) and because they may be coopted by the many British MPs who are already demanding a change to the UK's COVID strategy.
  • Any change to the UK's strategy is clearly going to have an effect on the wider world.
  • Channel 4 News is a well-respected outlet, and the interviewer challenges Dix throughout (as all British TV news presenters are trained to do when conducting interviews).

I read it, but I read up on this doctor after too. Said some questionable things IMO. So not the news source, but the source of the info (Dr. Dix) as a whole gives me pause. If studies point to him being right, then fine, but otherwise I'll just smile and move on.

Not sure I agree people universally saw changes a decade ago. Many here had zero idea there was a swine flu shot shortage that was nearly impossible to get. I know my husband's company sucked with sick leave around that time.

Again, I shared it solely because I consider it newsworthy, not for the purpose of changing anyone's mind. I think it's important to be aware of the conversations being had among those in positions of power and influence, even (and indeed especially) if we disagree with them.

Why no one waiting for moderna?
Didn't you hear? Owner of the company said he thinks you will need a fourth shot of Moderna so I'm sure everyone is going for the Pfizer as that absolutely proves the Moderna doesn't work.
Or maybe it was the time of day, who knows?

Worried more about side effects? I know a few Moderna originals who won't do it again.

I get you. I want more to it myself and mentally file away in case more do discuss.

Most people, and most recommendations are to get the same. I would assume that just means more people got Pfizer. Which, if you include people under 18 getting boosters (or first shots) there's simply more people eligible for Pfizer.

Then again, maybe they all heard it's a smaller dose and just wanted less filling. (This part is clearly a joke.)

I legit assume you're joking and making fun of the Moderna CEO here, hence the joke emoji.

I wish I could remember the phrasing, but someone on Twitter came up with a witty term about it; in the same vein that others have been throwing around to denigrate people who have chosen to remain cautious. The epitome of the “This is Fine” fire dog. Where people are so desperate to demonstrate that no virus is going to change their normal, they are living with the virus, etc. that it also ventures into the world of absurdity. There are schools that only 30% of kids are present, not enough staff, so classes are combined and everyone watches a movie and this is somehow better than allowing virtual options.

People mentioned that "nowhere in the US" will go back into lockdown. Well, if we define lockdown as where schools, businesses, work locations are closed. Where people are advised to stay off the roads and only go out if they are an essential worker or have an emergency, then places in the US go into lockdown All.The.Time. We call them weather events. Blizzards, floods, hurricanes. Which is a point Dr. Osterholm made. If a major hurricane is going to hit a certain area we don't say "kids are better off in school." For whatever reason, people can't handle an infectious disease being similar enough to require similar action. Nature is nature in whatever form it takes.

Same as it ever was, virus doesn't care.

FDA has approved on certain groups , my understanding on that . I checked with my pharmacy and they told me their appt online sites have not been updated yet.
No they have not. Israel did for certain groups. Edit: might be wrong sorry - CDC did not have it listed that I could find. Only recent update was boosters for 12-15. Just double checked. WV asked for 4th doses but that was 2 days ago. Some are doing it by hiding vaccine card info and going from pharmacy to pharmacy.
